My First Bad Experience With Case Knives Fit and Finish

I realize that I havent had a ton of Case knives in my life. I have had a few but never one with fit and finish issues like this. I've heard the complaints from others but this is my first experience!!

hi JB i had collected case toothpicks some ten years ago until i ordered one from shepherd hills a toothpick with a gold cross on the show side when it came i opened the blade and it hung there like a limp bisquit ...a broken knife when i called case i just happened to speak to one of the case grandchildren well she went on about what a great company they were (so much so as to send out a broken knife) so i fixed the problem got my money back and never messed with case knives ever again!

Hey JB, totally agree with your assessment of this Russ Lock. Overall, it looks to be a great knife but like you said, the gaps at the back are quite significant. Generally, I can overlook gaps but this is a bigger gap than usual. Thanks for showing us!!

That second knife you look at, the Sodbuster Jr. Is the only case knife I have with a gap in it. It's actually quite large but I use the knife for everything and is always in my pocket.

Just Double checked the Russlock as I got the same box from SMKW Army Care Package Generals Box and mine has the same gap and flexes so maybe case gave them an offer they couldn't refuse to throw it in the boxes for August.

I have yet to get a bad Case, they have all been good. Must be lucky. I've heard a lot of horror stories, and that one is awful. Case should re-think their inspection process. That never should have made it out the door. It needs to go back with a WTF note. I would love to hear their response.

You've really had a great selection of Case knives so far! Most of the ones I've handled have looked like the Russlock. All of the RRs that I've handled and had have been miles above Case on fit and finish and blade grinds. Happy National Knife Day!

Holy crap, that's bad! That one definitely needs to go back for warranty work. None of my Cases have been that bad, though a few of them have alignment issues. Some of the Stockmen may also have a little blade rub...but I can overlook that in a Stockman. My Sod Buster Jrs seem to be worst for gaps and misalignment, but yours is dang near perfect.

Well i just ordered my first Russlock knowing the fit and finish is spotty. So i will do a review when i get it. Yours is real bad. Especially how much they ask for these. It sucks that there warrenty doesnt actually help. One of the reasons Rosecraft is so popular. Thanks for sharing JB!

Don’t be mad at the gapping !! Now you have something to catch all your pocket lint in !! The last 3 case experience I’ve had were rough . I’ve had gapping and some walk and talk issues . 2 of the last ones I bought were gifts too .

I sent one of my stockmans into Case for repair because the fit & finish was pretty bad. They barely improved it. The cost of shipping and waiting for it to return wasn't worth it. Still, since it was a freebie, maybe he could give it a try.

Good honest review done well.im the same with case I've about 6/7 knives and there all OK,not perfect but good enough,I also agree that at the price they sell for I'd expect better but I do like there bone and designs enough to let it pass.not all my gec are perfect. But that russ lock is beyond bad quality. Hope fully they will sort you out.atb paddy

The gapping issues are pretty bad with Case, but another thing that bothers me about them is that I've never once gotten a Case that was sharp to my standards out of the box. Usually, they can barely cut paper. *Sometimes,* they can cut paper but they leave it super raggedy. Having to sharpen a knife out of the box sometimes doesn't bother me, but it just looks bad when RR can put an edge on theirs that can shave the hairs off my arm every single stinkin' time whether it's a $6 knife or a $60 one. I think with Case, we're paying an awful lot of extra money for the Case name and a little "USA" tang stamp. Sometimes it's worth it, sometimes it's not.

Yes...they should come relatively sharp out of the box. I have had knives that wouldn't cut paper out of the box.....not good

@@BigRedEDC it's fine, like I have the tools to sharpen. I'll do it no problem. It just sort of smells funny to me, because people tend to hate on Chinese made knives and yet RR gets it right with their edges every time in my experience. Plus I think Cases are made for people who might not be into knives and are getting into the hobby, I'd want my first expensive knife to cut. I've had a few other problems with Case, but usually once they're sharp they're good knives.

I bought a Russlock back some years ago, beautiful blue bone, with an American flag Case emblem, within that first day the emblem fell out in my pocket. Easy fix, but come on Case.

It bummed me out that it was the flag. If nothing else, I would have made damn sure that part of the knife was perfect. My dad is a Vietnam vet, and my Grandpa was a 9 month P.O.W. in WWII. I honor that flag with everything in me.

I own over a dozen Case knives, and I'm batting about 60% good, 30% ok with minor issues, 10% returned to the dealer. That said, I have a two-blade Case barlow and a jigged bone Case stockman that are two of my favorite slip joints. It's always a bit of a gamble buying Case, but if you get a good one, they make some great knives.

I grew up with Richards knives in the 70’s so I feel spoiled with the quality of what’s available today. I’ve had one dodgy knife from Case. It was a large Trapper, where the spay blade was off centre and rubbing. Maybe I should have sent it back, but I fixed it, so now it’s fine. The other 15 Cases I’ve had, have been good to perfect.

I straightened mine in the traditional way with a setting hammer.A couple of taps and all’s good!

Ouch, not seen one that bad yet. In fact, the Case Russ Lock I bought on NKD last year had no gapping at all. Heck, I got an Old used Boker from Ebay last night that looked better than that. It had one gap in the middle but it was uniform. I would send that one in to Case to get a better one.

I bought a trapper and copperlock 3 years ago. Handles are good with no gaps, better than RR. But my problem is with very bad blade quality, all 3 blades have the same issues. Very dull edges, uneven grinds, big burr, rounded tips. They are also probably too soft, because edge sharpness holding is noticeably worse than RR.

You know my expirience is most if not all brands let stuff go out the door wich Shouldn't, i own a cpm S90v shaman with a wonky grind and a Hinderer xm 24 wich says HINDC on the titanium side of the handle instead of Hinderer, so it even happens to the more premium stuff.

Hello, just finding this video. 2 years after this I can attest that Case has gotten even worse. I was recovering Case knives for people in different materials. However I finally quit because the quality is so bad that every one I put back together had serious gaps and uncentered blades. It sucks they won’t improve there quality.

Ya I agree that is not good for 80bucks. As much as I have seen this issue discussed I would imagine they would try harder on quality control. To try to not loss customers and I have bad word of mouth. I have four case knives that are all great. Only very slight gapping on my sod buster… 30 bucks whatever. But I have seen poor done ones. I image at some point they moved to automating production. that’s the only way i could imagine this making it though. I would send it back to case.

I only have 3 case knives. They arent to bad but for the money you pay for them theres diffinitly better options now. I think they are made just for collectors in my opinion and if u do get a good 1 and use it and it does break or something u have to worry about getting a new 1 that might be crappy

Somehow the steel liner has warped and that's probably bad quality control but it could have happened perhaps due to storing or shipping situations that wheren't optimal. I'm afraid it was not great of the production stage, but if it became worse like this off factory i couldn't tell you. This would surely be corrected by Case due to warranty. Sorry that it found his way out of the factory and in your hands JB. If you do send it back to Case, please do a follow up on how they corrected this error. Have a knife day friend.

My Case Winterbottom Chestnut Bone Russlock Regular Member Knife 2010 has no issues whatsoever but I suspect it may have been subject to better quality control. However my latest purchase (medium stockman 2023, blue bone with red shield) has the wrong model number 62032 etched on the sheepsfoot blade. It should be 63032. How did that get through QC?

my very first pocket knife was when I was 6 years old, it was a Case 2 blade Canoe. I wish I still had it. I have had a few case knives over the years, and I would be very surprised to have one that was not really well made. I would send that back and get it made right.

A bought a Case some years ago from a dealer here in Oz. It was a case of one that slipped through QC. So much blade play and yes, the finish was really disappointing. One side was loose, and I was offered a replacement but I declined. It turned me off buying another. EDIT: I wrote that when I started watching and lo and behold, you show the exact knife (different scales), the Russlock, that I had issues with.

I'm certainly not a big traditional guy but the very few Cases I've handled or owned I found to be subpar in gapping and edge grinding. I suspect at some point the powers that be at Case realized that there was more money to be made catering to the collector as opposed to the user especially with their very close relationship with SMKW and that's when quality started to fall off.

Happy NKD knife bro!! Killer Case blades. My Dad gave me a big double bladed Case folder w 4"bllades&it has a small gap between liner&back spring it was made in the 70s. Everything else about the blade is killer!!

I haven't seen that kind of gaping in a Case. The only issues I've had is a bit of blade rubbing on a Delrind Canoe and a bit of a burr on the edge of a swayback. Both knives are totally functional, but it's not ideal.

Good information Sir. I'll admit I wouldn't even know that knife had some issues 🥴. Maybe in the future you can do a little tutorial on those types of knives and defects to look for when purchasing. Just me personally, I wouldn't know there was any problem with the knife at all🤔. I only use basic folders and fixed blades. Just a thought. Anyways, great info and breakdown. 👍💪

I ordered my first case from Amazon for 30$ CAD. Pocket worn trapper with bone covers with perfect fit and finish. Every other case I’ve checked after that was sub par lol but I heard they’ve been getting better

Because I started a little sodbuster collection. Blade offcentre, wobbles, spring gap. I fixed the wobble, but it’s almost rubbing a liner. And living in Europe sending it back to the US wasnt really an option. So 1 Case knife, and never another one.

Only one that was worse is a German/Solingen Eye knife, which I did sent back, but the 2nd one was bad also. Even my little Imperial yellow plastic for about 10 euros is better. Ah wel, its just a collection I look at, and don’t use 😉

Really disappointing I always regarded case slip joints as some of the best. I have wanted to buy a new Case for some time now. I have several older ones that have great fit and finish this really makes me question Case quality now.

That was really bad as a 50 dollar knife. When you looked it up and it was 80 it was kind of like a kick in the teeth. I don't know how many people have shown you similar issues either a little better or worse but Wow. Unless there is some reason that it has to be with the Russ Lock to have it lock and have that friction folder style opening mechanism I don't know. If I was in a shop and saw that I would just leave. Maybe that is why the Case brick and mortar store disappeared well before the Covid thing by years.

I’ve been lucky I guess . All four of my Case knives are flawless but I have seen some with poor fit and finish . That’s why I only purchase Case knives locally too expensive to risk buying online .

Wow! That's a horrible example! I have honestly never gotten a Case knife that had any gapping at all. One or two with minor blade rub (stockman) and sometimes the edges are ground with a pretty rough grit, but only perfect fit and finish otherwise. That thing looks like it got run over and squished apart. Even the brass is bowed! Sorry you pulled such a lemon.

The linerlock/backspring gap on Russlocks is more common than not in my experience. After a year or two with my first Russlock, I came to the conclusion that I liked the design, function and aesthetics enough to outweigh my frustrations with the slapdash linerlock/backspring fitment.

No your not, it's definitely the 'case!' Without going to a store and picking one up it's a lottery. Most of the examples I've handled here in the UK side to side play.! The old "well there for the collectors really" chestnut from the dealers here in Germany and the US has worn thin. Specially when you go out your way to contact and ask the dealers to check before shipping. Own one Barlow tried four canoes sadly they all went back. Yes all had gapping too.

Good frank review! Felt for you when you deflated even further upon finding the retail price (lol, ). All my hand-me-down folding knives are Buck, (even though one is in a Case leather belt pouch) and I've not gone that route in my collection, so I I gots no relevant experience. Thanks for the vid!

JB, you are right. I would expect that gapping from RR, but not for Case, given the prices (80 bucks!!!). I don't own either, yet :). But the Russlock looks really cool!

I'll say this much I have a few case knives with small gaps, your is horrible. I would send it back asap!! Now I've purchased 12 RR knives the work knife ,trappers, barlows , elephant toe, bow trapper, and every single rr has gaps or blade wobble, poor cover to bolster transition etc. I stopped after getting the blue jean workknife with horrible blade wobble I'm talking over 3/16 side to side play with the blade open. After that no more RR for me it was a phase in my collecting honestly imo I wasted money chasing a good knife that costs 20bucks.

I have had many more RR knives than Case and have not had this bad of an issue with any of them!! Love my RR knives! Thanks for watching!
