A lot of what holds back cameras from that time is actually processing. With the old Panasonics from that I revived after my GRⅢ got stolen, I found that if you underexpose by 0.7 EV, then you can pull up exposure with ACR and get decent dynamic range without clipping. Without correction, these Panasonics tend to overexpose (JPEG only). Of course, no freezing of action or shooting in the dark. Still nicer colors than with my new Samsung phone, which over saturates even in neutral mode. I like your pigeon image! My first camera in the 80s was a vintage Agfa Optima, shooting black and white films only, which my dad developed for me.

I agree with that for the most part. I think there are some limits though with the older/cheaper digital cameras, but as time goes on the difference between the latest gear and even 10 or 20 year old gear will diminish. It's not like old cameras suddenly get worse when new ones come out. :) And that is a cool camera to start with!

Built-in music wow! Thinking about that, that would be cool if you could upload music files into the Ricoh GR's built-in 2GB storage and then listen to music through bluetooth enabled earphones. Cool video going back to your roots!

Yeah!! That's the same idea. I guess it might hinder the battery life. And with smartphones it's kinda pointless these days. But back in 2007 that was a super cool feature. I didn't own an MP3 player at the time so this was a perfect gadget for me. :)

Even though it's objectively not good, the night shots you showed from this are really nice in a very nostalgic way. While a lot of people feel nostalgic when looking at film photography, for me, it's early digital aesthetics that really get me. Great video! Both of you always deliver!

I agree!! It definitely evokes a sense of the 2000s. Lots of low-fi point-and-shoot camera images were around in those days. I know there will be a time when we feel just as nostalgic for that look as we do for old film photos. :)

I have always liked compact cameras, the idea of carrying big cameras with heavy lenses never appealed to me-I use a Sony RX 100vii and it’s compact, light weight and fun to use. I enjoyed your video, always a pleasure to spend time with you via KZbin. (My first camera at 11 years old was my grandmother’s Leica, I took terrible photos, but had a lot of fun using that camera).

My first EYExplore video! I know you from when you've been on Norm's Tokyo Lens channel. As a kid, the first camera I used was probably something using 110 format film and after that a couple of fixed focus 35mm film cameras. The first camera I bought for myself was also a Samsung - a Slim Zoom 130S 35mm film camera with 38-130mm F4-9.9 lens. The AF system used Fuzzy Logic apparently! I took this camera on my first trip to Japan which was 20 years ago this week along with my first digital camera which was a Fuji FinePix 1300 which had 1.3 megapixels and a fixed foal length lens. I sold both of them many, many years ago while they were still worth something but I've still got my Minolta DiMAGE F200 from 2003 and a Panasonic DMC-FP1 from 2010 which I chose for the very compact size. It's a similar design to your NV3 with a folded optics zoom lens inside. I can see the shortcomings of the images now compared to a modern cameras but it served me well.
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Wow, that Samsung had quite the zoom lens on it! Looks almost comical when fully extended. I looked up all of these cameras. It's amazing how many different camera designs there have been over the years. They all look, and presumably handle, so differently. And I totally forgot to mention the internals of the NV3. I was aware of the folded optics design, which I think is a pretty neat way to cram a zoom lens into such a tiny space without having anything sticking out the front. Glad you're aware of it already! :)

Maybe it is just because of how KZbin compressed visual quality to near oblivion, but I could barely notice that big of a difference between the Samsung and the Ricoh's pictures of the dad and his kid sleeping. The other pictures looked really nice too, considering that camera's age. Really goes to show how important it is to find something interesting, and to compose it properly in the frame! I feel quite fortunate to have started on a Nikon D5200, which was capable of a lot of things as it was a proper DSLR. But I feel that it is also because I was never deprived of such features that I took them for granted (and wasn't forced to learn composition), and just tried to aim for getting those romanticized blurry background shots with heavy before and after edits. I now own a Canon M50 (impressively small, but still fully featured), and have been focusing *only* on finding interesting scenes. And I give you a lot of credit for that, every time I watch one of your videos each dreaded Monday, I go out at least once a week for an hour or two to just take photos around my city!
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah in this case it's not so much about compression as it is just resolution. They are both pretty small in the video. But if you see them both on a big screen at 100% there night and day difference in the detail. But it just goes to show that in many context those extra details don't matter much. and yeah, a D5200 is a pretty nice camera to start out with! And the M50 is great! I've had a number of people bring one to our workshops. Super cool. Glad you're finding inspiration from our videos! Challenge your eye!! :)

My very first experience with a camera was when I was ten years old in 2005. My mom had a disposable kodak max camera that I stole from her and shot a bunch of random pictures with, needless to say she was quite angry, haha. My first personal camera I got in 2013 after I graduated from high school, I forgot the model, but it was a little blue canon point and shoot. I carried that thing on my hip for a while. Sadly I lost most of the pictures I had from it but I remember having a lot of fun with that little thing. Photography was a huge part of my childhood. Growing up with my mom and aunt who loved to document everything there was always little canisters of film laying around. I remember taking trips with them to that little kiosk called "Kodak Picture Maker" about once a week or so once digital started becoming more prominent. Anyway, thanks for sharing your stories. It's always interesting hearing other people's stories on what got them into photography.

I like your early photo adventure with a stolen camera, haha. I also took photos sometimes as a kid, using disposables or my dads camera here and there. But it didn't really hook me. I just messed around with the cameras mostly on family trips. It didn't become a 'thing' till I came to Tokyo. And I kinda regret that. It could have been really interesting to look back on childhood photos now. Thanks for sharing as well! :)

Actually, these images look pretty damn cool! They have that nice mid 2000's nostalgia feel, fuzzy "griddyness" and color scheme to them and I really consider getting a used one to have a bit fun with it. I looked up the resolution, it's around 7MP, which is really not much, these day no problem with modern interpolation apps. Don't know what you guys all think, but I actually dig it!
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you know I hadn't looked at them in a loooong time. They are not as bad as I thought haha. They look a little better scaled down here in the video. 7.2 mp meant they were a bit outside of the 4k video frame. But if you see them at 100% they are quite rough. But it's part of the charm! I think for me the biggest issue using this camera, even for fun, is not so much the IQ but the slowness of the camera. It's kind of tedious to use after you get used to snappy GR. :)

Great video! The pics from the NV3 appear to have a cool "lo-fi" feel to them, but maybe that was the processing style you were going for back in the day! The first digital camera I ever bought was a Canon PowerShot A10, about 20 years ago, but I didn't use it all that much. I got into digital photography more seriously in 2012 when I bought a Leica D-Lux6. I bought a Fujifilm X100S in 2013 and that became my primary camera for many years, but recently I've fallen in love with my D-Lux6 all over again and have been shooting with it exclusively for the past couple of months. The camera is 10 years old, but the images it produces still have that Leica magic!

Weird, just this morning I decided to take out my beloved orange Nikon Coolpix S6500 that I bought around 2013 to take to Hong Kong. At 16 MP I actually got some really nice shots. and I remember missing some too! Why feel dorky? Doesn't Daido still use this type of cameras to this day? As far as my first cameras, it was an Olympus Trip 35 (film camera back in the late 70's), or a Nikon Coolpix 990 as my first digital one, in the early 00's. That was a 3 MP beast. And yes, I miss the days of just having something small but pretty decent to carry with me. I have never been a big fan of taking pictures with my phone. Take your camera out more often and show it some love!
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 2 жыл бұрын
There were some huge leaps made from 2007 to 2013. I'm sure that Coolpix is still pretty decent in terms of image quality today. Anyway, I wasn't super serious about feeling dorky haha, just kinda observing my inner feelings and sharing them with you guys in a funny way. Wow, that Olympus is a beautiful camera. I know it's not cheap, but the GRs are great and very portable. No need to for the GR3, the GR2 is plenty and much more affordable. :)

Uplifting post, trip down memory lane. My first “real” camera was a used Argus C3 35mm rangefinder; everything manual, built like a tank, 3.5 f stop wide open, max 1/300th sec shutter speed, manual shutter cock separate from film advance, noisy like a cheap bed spring. BUT, it taught me the fundamentals. First “proper 35mm film SLR” was a Pentax Spotmatic purchased at Army PX near Tokyo. Early Sony digital was the 1MG Mavica/CD storage - remember that one? Samsung could have been a strong competitor to Sony, in this arena, IMO. Too bad Samsung got out of digital camera line. Agree? (Controls layout of NV3 looks similar to the Sony NEX/A6000 line.) Glad you escaped the “danger zone”😁. Will you be posting an episode featuring cherry blossoms?
@EYExplore
@EYExplore 2 жыл бұрын
Whoa, that's a old school cool camera! the Pentax looks much more practical though, hehe. My dad got that Sony Mavica with the CD storage. I believe it was our first digital camera. I was blown away by the tech of it as a teenager in the late 90s. Felt like the future! And yeah, I do agree. I think Samsung was onto something but then they just gave up. Yeah we should do one on cherry blossoms, now that you mention it. The challenge for us these days is that Axel doesn't live in Tokyo currently, so we can only shoot once in a while. I will pester him to come to Tokyo during the bloom so we can shoot something. :)

Nice video and thanks for sharing your memories. Back in the days different companies produced interesting hybrids with very different functions inside. Like how you hand automatically wraps strap around fingers, seems like muscle memory still works :D In theory first camera was film... but it was something cheap and plastic point and shoot, don't remember the name... and no knowledge about photography. Making family photos. So this doesn't count. Second camera was Canon PowerShot A530, still no knowledge about photography. Making family travel photos, but sometimes I did rare photos of things that attracted my attention. This barely counts too. Then it was mobile phones: different Nokia, Samsung, Huawei. Still point and shoot. In 2019 on Christmas break I've read Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure because I was interested how photography works. But I've missed some info about composition - we all can point and shoot, but making interesting photos is hard. So I've started digging around about it and find out that you can learn composition without having real camera, but using just a phone. So, my first camera when I've started to think about how to make photos (instead of point and shoot) was iPhone X. Around same time I've discovered your channel :D Later, in beginning of 2020 I've bought Nikon D3500 with Nikkor 18-140 lens, still using it for weekend walks as beginner :D So, I guess my first camera was iPhone X, but with move to "dedicated camera" I enjoy photography more than with phone (and get less distraction from phone during my walks).

Haha yeah, and also I hold my GR in basically the same way. So, it comes naturally. :) I also experienced a few cameras before, thanks to my dad's interest in photography. But I was just messing around with his cameras and they were not truly my own. Yeah, composition is what it all comes down to. We have to learn about exposure and all the other technical details of how to use the camera. But to create art, it is basically a process of deciding what is in the frame and what is not, and how the things in the frame relate to each other. Glad you are walking down this path! :)

You know, I actually like the low dynamic range look of the Samsung. It has this pop in the highlights that looks like a retro digital aesthetic. I think it's the same highlight clip pull down look that I appreciate about the 2nd generation Fujifilm cameras like the X-T1. My first ever camera was the Canon 7D with the 28f1.8. My friend got me a deal on the display model, and I had no idea what I was doing. I actually got it for filmmaking, and used it for that 1 time, but liked the images. I shot a lot of wildlife like deer and foxes by sneaking up on them like a maniac. Later sold it for the Sony A7II, because of the size, but I hated it, so I sold it for the Fujifilm X-E2S and the 27f2.8. I loved that camera, but I sold it for the X-T2 thinking I needed faster AF. My X-T2 broke the mechanical shutter and I've been too poor to buy a replacement since. So I'm using my old X-70 until I can afford something new. Luckily, I haven't really been tempted, but Nikon is making a convincing case.

It's definitely retro! I think as time goes on people will appreciate these old digital cameras a bit more, much like we enjoy the look of lo-fi retro film, so too will we enjoy the retro digital look. A 7D is a nice camera to start with! I'd say if I had a limited budget but wanted full frame I would be looking at the Nikon Z5 very very closely. Or even a second-hand Z6. :)
@-grey
@-grey 2 жыл бұрын
@@EYExplore the Z5 is very tempting. I love the idea of the new 40mm and your fast 28. I saw a possible patent for a cheaper entry level Nikon which omits the viewfinder as a cost saving measure and competes with the Canon RP or Sony A7c. It might be exactly what I'm looking for to be honest. ✌️

Awesome idea, It reminds me when I was the first time visiting Tokyo with my second digital camera, the Nikon D100 in March 2009. However my first digital camera was the Nikon COOLPIX E800 in 1999, that was an amazing moment, a new discovery, a new approach to photography for me. Imagine the resolution was only 1600x1200 pixel, 38-76 mm, 2.1 megapixel. I was feeling free when I had it at that time, with a compact flash card since no rolls wasted. And it really changed how I was thinking to take photos.
