I actually loved celebrating Christmas in Japan when I was an exchange studenr during high school. Honestly, at first I thought I would be lonely cause I wouldn't spend it with my family. But it turned out really great. First, I was lucky Christmas Eve was on a Sunday. So, no school during the day. Secondly, my host mum said I could invite some friends over and have an okonomiyaki party, which was so fun. After that my host sister made a christmas cake which was so delicious! And lastly, we took a walk an went looking at the christmas light decorations that was put up around the city. It was simple but cozy and I was so happy. Last year, I actually gave sort of back the nice gesture by inviting a Japanese friend from uni over to celebrate Christmas with my family. She got to experience a very traditional Finnish Christmas Eve with the food, presents and all. We even baked a lot of ginger breads and all so she could get the full Christmas spirit 🥰 She was really happy and we where so glad she liked it.

Hey Emirichu! I am from Germany and I could already tell from your Christmas Market Videos that this is not a real Christmas market. I mean maybe they interpret them a little different in Japan but in Germany there is much more then just stands with the same food. The Christmas Markets here are way better I could already tell from the videos. There are much more stands with different foods, stands with jewelry, stands with games, stands with hot drinks, Ferris wheels and much more! You should definitely come here in winter and go to the “Kassel Weinachtsmarkt” if you want to visit a real one. I think that is the most christmassy Christmas Market ever here in Germany. There is also a Santa Clause which flies over the market in his sleigh and tells a story. The atmosphere is also much more different. The whole Christmas on the 24th is actually also how it is here in Germany too and probably where Japan got it from. Difference being that while the main church ceremony and getting the presents happen on the 24th, the 25th is still technically Christmas Day. For us it was a day where you eat a kinda big breakfast with your family and spend the time inside chilling doing nothing. When i was a kid that was the day i got to finally try out the toys i got. The thing is we actually also have a second Christmas Day, literally called "second Christmas Day", which is probably supposed to give you more time in form of a federal holiday. For us it was always 24th with close family, 25th evening with Grandparents Nr.1, then 26th with Grandparents Nr2.

I wanna know the story behind the marketing campaign that started it. Thinking of it reminds me of how a bacon seller decided to visit a fuckton of medics, start conversations with them and ask them if eggs with bacon could be a good way to start your day due to the energy and protein they provide, and apparently all of them decided to publish that and suggest it to their clients to that at the same time. Fucking marketing can start cultural traditions in the weirdest ways possible.

@@juanrodriguez9971 Long story short: it's based on the American Thanksgiving/Christmas tradition of eating a turkey dinner for the holidays. Chrismas is definitely my favorite holiday, but 2023's was possibly my worst one yet. I went through a huge depression spike and the snow started up super late. Usually, Chrismas perks me up and I'm playing songs all throughout the month, but this one was rather miserable and I only felt dread as it approached. But the outdoor lights of the market you went to reminded me of a nice one when I was a kid. It was a light display you drive through. It had scenes of every line in "12 Days of Chrismas", which is my favorite Chrismas song. And the speed we were driving was pretty much perfect length for the song. It is a nice memory. Though, my dream would be to see a ballet performance of The Nutcracker.

Biased, nothing. It’s like they tailor-made that Miku just for you! Also, soggy KFC? You just have been eating at the wrong establishments, my friend. All the ones I’ve eaten at here in WV have always been crispy, whether it’s original recipe or crispy. I won’t dispute that Popeyes’s has great chicken, but KFC takes the gold when it comes to the biscuits. The Popeye’s I ate at in TN all might as well have used sawdust for their biscuits, they were so dry and tasteless. On this we can agree, though: Christmas is the best holiday and no amount of commercialization can ruin that! TSO and Mannheim Steamroller practically stay in the cd player as soon as Thanksgiving ends, I have a schedule of specific Christmas movies to watch on Christmas Eve (TSO’s The Ghosts of Christmas Eve, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Nutcracker: the Motion Picture (1986)) and Christmas Day (Muppet Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, Mannheim Steamroller’s Christmas concert) on top of others I watch throughout the month, and I’m terrible about taking down all the decorations because I love them so much.

I knew Christmas in Japan was different but man that's surprising. But happy to hear you guys had a good Christmas.
@ac14559 ай бұрын
To me it’s not a surprise at all. Japan’s like 2% Christian. They got their own traditions. I do wonder what Christmas in Korea would be like considering it has a much higher Christian population, about a 1/4th.
@PolishAxolotl9 ай бұрын
@@ac1455The thing is that traditionally Christian countries also have their own traditions. Here in Poland unlike other countries we don't eat meat for example.

my husband does the same thing it’s a tradition we always put our Christmas tree up on November 1st. My family never really celebrated Christmas we brought a christmas cake and got together but not really a full celebration like what me my husband and our children do now. Even my mom and dad and siblings celebrate Christmas after most of us moved from Sapporo to Albuquerque and Denver. I love how my husband’s extended family celebrates because his family is a mix of Zulu,Japanese and Filipino we get a meddle of different cultures and food. (lumpia ans pansit is my favorite).

God Created us, we sinned (lying, stealing, adultery, and hate) and deserve hell because God punishes sin. But God, in his love sent Jesus to die on the cross for our sins and whoever turns from sin and believes in Jesus will not perish but have life after death.

It's fine to be a bit late about Christmas. We still haven't had our family Christmas dinner since someone has been travelling all the time, but we will have it soon, it's perfectly fine to have a Christmas dinner in the middle of Februari.
@Lilly-13379 ай бұрын
It's the same in Germany. Everything builds up to the 24.December. We even do Adventskranz where you light a candle every Sunday in the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas. Then you have a feast with your family, exchange gifts and swear to never eat anything ever again. The next day everything is over. You might visit some relatives but at midnight on the 24. Christmas is over.
@promisetourself9 ай бұрын
Genuine question, but where do you (roughly) live in Germany? Because that has Never been my experience in 26 years here. Not even just in the private family celebrations, but even in public spaces too
@Lilly-13379 ай бұрын
Southern Bavaria. There is even an unspoken rule here that all decorations should be taken down before January 2 (Maria Lichtmess). Otherwise you get really weird looks from your neighbours.

For me, Christmas markets are the sole reason why my winterdepression didn't go more downhill. Especially the medieval ones are super fun! Watching ppl take a dip in a bathtub in the public, throwing some axes and doing some archery while you are drunk from drinking too much of delicious Glühwein. Daaa besttt Hope that encouraged you more to visit them in Germany! :)

For Japan, first are Tanabata (the Star Festival) and White Day; and lastly are Valentine's Day and Christmas. I hope I'm wrong.

Christmas 2023 was a rather somber yet nostalgic one. We suffered a loss a week before Christmas and throughout the holiday, I felt not like myself. But seeing this video made my day and made me realize that though we lost someone to us, our family was still together no matter what, and that's what Christmas should feel like. P.S. If you can, go to Germany sometime and experience the magic of Christmas in Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Munich, and so many others!
