I am one session behind you at Chamberlain and I wanted to let you know that I really appreciate these videos that you do! I always watch your session re-cap videos and it really helps me to know what to expect for my next session! I think a vlog-style day in the life would be fantastic to watch for your clinical days! If you could even go over the type of paperwork you have to complete after your clinical that would be awesome too (as much as you're able to share anyway). Thanks!

How do they choose clinical hours? If I do weekday schedule, are clinicals on The Weeknd’s?
@theluckienurse
@theluckienurse Жыл бұрын
Hey! If you are doing the standard daytime program, your clinicals will be during the weekday. If you were doing the evening and weekend program, your clinicals would be on weekends (sometimes, depending on the course, there will be weekday clinical options available for weekend students). There is a separate registration for students to register for clinicals each session. You will get to choose which clinical site you work at. Some sessions, you will have the option of eight hour clinicals versus 12 hour clinicals, but most of the time, you will not get that choice. Hope that helps!

Hi I’m currently at chamberlain and I’m starting fundamentals skills in June and the patient care in July next years. When do clinicals actually start and is it usually right away when classes begin?
@theluckienurse
@theluckienurse Жыл бұрын
Hey! Good luck on your nursing journey! The first clinical is your next class - Fundamentals of Patient care and it depends on the class/ the amount of clinical hours required for the class. A course that has 96 total clinical hours will start the first week of class and you will be in the hospital every week. A course with less clinical hours (like 48) may have you starting clinicals a week, two weeks, or even a month into the class. Right now I am in maternity, and my clinicals don’t start until week 5 of the class. There is a 48 hour clinical requirement for this course, so I will have four 12-hour clinicals. Some of my classmates started clinical for maternity in week 1 and their last day at the hospital will be in week 4. It varies from class to class. Hope this helps!

@theluckienurse
@theluckienurse Жыл бұрын
Hey! So, it depends on the campus that you are applying to. My campus was not super competitive to get into when I applied, which is part of the reason why I applied. Other campuses have a wait list and I have heard of them turning away students with a 3.0 GPA. So it all just depends on when you are applying and which campus you are applying to!

Did the clinical sites require the covid vaccine?
@theluckienurse
@theluckienurse Жыл бұрын
Hey! It depends on the site that you are at. Some sites do not require the vaccine, some sites require the vaccine but will allow exceptions under certain circumstances, and some sites require the vaccine and do not allow any exceptions at all. I think you need the vaccine for school though to remain in clinical compliance… They may allow certain exceptions but I’m not sure.

Do you guys pick a patient before?
@theluckienurse
@theluckienurse 9 ай бұрын
Hey! Thank you for watching! We do not pick our patients. Our Clinical Instructor goes onto the unit before we students get there, and they will talk to the nurses to see which patient they are going to assign us. So our Clinical Instructor will give us our assigned patients, and give us report on our patients, before we actually get up on the unit.

The curriculum has changed for Chamberlain, at least on my campus. Right now I am taking complex health, which is my third to last class. We only have two exams for complex - the midterm and the final. But we have other exams that we have to take which are standardized. So, teachers will say that we only have two exams in this class, but really a students are taking like 4 exams now. On top of that, we have five quizzes to take

Hey! Yes! Clinical rotations change every 8 weeks. You may be lucky and get the same hospital a few times but not every site is available every session or for every class. @theluckienurse
@theluckienurse 7 ай бұрын
Hey! Thank you for watching! Yes, you can test out of any gen ed course. Just talk to your advisor before you actually register for the class and see what your options are. They are called proficiency exams. They are extremely hard and you are not given any study material to use. They also do not let you know what is on the exam. I was successfully able to test out of some courses, including English classes. Some subjects are definitely harder to test out of then others. Also, you do have to pay a fee of I think $30 per exam. I think that it is worth it to try to test out of a class rather than to pay full price and have to take a class for an entire session. Good luck!

Hey! That’s so exciting! The first class that you have a clinical rotation in will be Fundamentals of Patient Care. Fundamentals is split into two courses. The first course is Fundamentals Skills- that class you have a lecture and a lab. In lab you will get to learn nursing skills on the mannequins. Then in Fundamentals of patient care, you actually go to the hospital 😊 Clinicals can be 12 hours or 8 hours. It depends on the class that you’re in. Some courses require more clinical hours than others, and in those classes you will likely have 12 hour clinicals.

Have you noticed a difference in how a nurse treats a student when they actually work on that unit or at that hospital? Does your professor try to pair them with nurses that they don't know?
@theluckienurse
@theluckienurse 11 ай бұрын
Hey, that’s actually a great question! I have not had any clinicals where a classmate worked at the hospital. I think some organizations have a policy that if you work at the hospital you cannot volunteer or do a clinical at the hospital/the unit you work on. But if that ever were to happen, I would imagine that it would be up to the clinical instructor. Some instructors would probably see a benefit in pairing a student with someone that they know and feel comfortable with. While other instructors would want students to get hands on experience with someone that they don’t know.

@theluckienurse
@theluckienurse 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thank you for watching my video! You should absolutely not be nervous!!! I have people in my cohort who are in their 40s and a couple (that I know of) who are in their 50s. And that is just my cohort… I’m sure that there are a lot of people older than you at my school and nationwide throughout Chamberlain’s programs! Before I started Chamberlain, I read that the average age of a new nurse is 30. I’m sure that age is actively increasing as many people are going into nursing as their second or third profession later in life. The good thing about going to school when you’re older is that I think you take it a lot more seriously than kids who start nursing school right out of high school. To be honest, every session and every class is different. This summer, I had to go to campus four nights a week for class. But right now I’m only going to campus one night a week. Clinicals are on Saturday or Sunday if you do the evening and weekend program. Some campuses are now even offering online only… Where all of your classes are completely online, and you only have to be in person for clinicals. Definitely reach out to an advisor at the location closest to you! Good luck!

Hey! Check your emails daily!!! Registration openings vary by campus and it changes each session! Usually, it is a few weeks into your current session before you can register for the next… and even after you register for your didactic classes, registration for clinical sites may not be open for another couple of weeks. The school will usually send you an email up to a week or a even few days before registration opens, so it can get stressful!

@theluckienurse Жыл бұрын
@@kaitlyntanskey2749 In order to register, you just need to make sure that you do not have a hold on your account. It is the same as registering for classes, however, each clinical site is different. So after you register, within a few weeks you may have an orientation for your specific clinical site. Some hospitals require additional fees, and paper work like proof of vaccinations (in addition to what is in Complio). My site this session did not require anything extra from me. My site next session requires me to show proof of like 5 vaccinations with my doctor's signature saying that they are valid.... Other clinical sites required a $30-$40 fee.

@theluckienurse Жыл бұрын
@@Chfhfh ohhhh! Gotcha! I can make a video talking about the clinical documentation that is required. The observation is not really something that I can demonstrate… It consists of you going into a room, analyzing the room and the patient and then just documenting what you see. For example, whether or not you see that the patient is on oxygen, whether there is clutter in the room that could put the patient at risk of falling, etc. It is meant to be a quick 60 observation to train us that as we go into patients’ rooms for the first time, we should be paying attention to what we observe and making mental notes.
