My First CPU Upgrade Intel i3 to i5 Samsung Series 3 Notebook NP300E5A

Fun practice video changing the CPU on this laptop! In terms of performance there is not a huge boost, but the thermal paste was old and the CPU was struggling. I might have gotten away with just replaceing the thermal paste.

I would double check the motherboard model for your laptop. For newer laptops nowadays not so easy replacing the cpu

Was it an optiplex 3010? It should a have sticker on the power supply itself. If it’s a 3010 Optiplex dt it will be a 250 watt power supply

Install the CPU-Z program on the laptop. On the first tab of the program, look at which socket type (BGA1023 or rPGA 989)? In the column "Revision" look what is written - C2 or K0? What laptop model?

@@naresht350 you can install an i5-3210m processor and a faster DDR3-1600 (4gb+4gb, 4gb+8gb) RAM. You can leave DDR3-1333 RAM, but it should be 8-12GB for fast programs.

Check the motherboard model using cpu z. Then look up the motherboard cpu support list online to see if the cpu you are looking at buying is on the supported list

I checked different processors that are compatible with HM65 and found i7-3840QM which has a G2 rPGA988B socket and a TDP of 45. Since you mentioned that when upgrading, we are supposed to consider TDP with + or - 10 with the current TDP. Do you think my upgrade will work? TIA.

I have a NP550P5C and I upgraded from an i5 3210M to a i7 363QM. The CPU works perfectly fine but the only issue is something with the (integrated graphics) graphics drivers. I get flickering pixels and flickering polygons in games. I tried to install drivers for it from the Samsung website but it doesn't seem to work (probably because the CPU is different from the original laptop model?) If anyone has any ideas let me know

I don't know if they have any 4th gen i7 with PPGA988 socket. For sure I know there are 3rd generation i7's with PPGA988. Do you have the same model? I would double check what cpu socket you have for your computer. The one in the video has PPGA988 socket, so it was easy to get i5's or up to 3rd generation i7's. 4th generation I don't think so because of the socket type but I could be wrong.

It’s thermal paste. I was using a generic best buy thermal paste which is no longer available. There are many thermal paste available and much better ones. Popular ones are arctic mx-4, corsair, definitely feel free to look around. Many brands available

Ssd would make a difference especially boot times. I would only upgrade cpu if there are specific programs I need to run that require a stronger cpu. Just my personal opinion though

you have to remove the motherboard to gain access to the battery. Or you can reset bios using 4 contacts nearby memory slots (if available). Kinda strange decision - to put bios battery "on the other side".
