Yep. We (i.e., Americans) really don't have a concept of "street shoes"...well, not in the way Eastern Europe seems to think of them. We have gym shoes (which we also call "tennis shoes" or "sneakers") and we wear them on the street, in the gym, in the house, and everywhere we go...except church where we tend to wear "church shoes" which are really just hard bottom dress shoes that one would wear in any professional environment. The fact that Eastern Europeans are said to get really angry when a person places his foot on a public bench is "incredible" to us. lol. While we don't wipe our hands on the bottom of our shoes (that would be bizarre), we also don't freak out about the dirt on the bottom of our shoes.

they ask for extra shoes in the gym because its the right thing to do think about the worst neighborhood in your city and how bad their streets could be . its only common sense to ask for a clean pair of shoes to work out where people sit on benches and do all kind of exercises ,sweat and dirty shoes don't mix my dude . edit: you don't need expensive shoes , usually even slippers that look like shoes and are CLEAN will do the job .

You're living the dream. You should write an e-book on how to travel across Europe on a budget. For example, old guys like me have no idea how you're buying internet access from stores which sell wifi cards. I'd just assume I would have to pay a really high fee to my cell phone service provider in the US to connect me to wifi abroad. Also, using buses and finding rooms at the last minute, how does that work? You've built up a valuable skill set whether you realize it or not.

@D3monInsid3 Ай бұрын
Regarding using public transportation ( as everything else was pretty much addressed ), you can find everything online; In english; In Romania we learn 2 foreign languages in school, starting with 2nd grade, up until we finish high school; One of them is mandatory english, so you will find that everyone under 40 can communicate to a degree in english; Airbnb and Booking both are very popular in Romania; Almost all the hosts speak english ( I never met one that didn't) so it's easy to call and ask for directions. We have weird people too, like every other country, but they usually look suspicious and you should stay away from them anyway. But otherwise, ask anyone, anything, and they will most likely help you; The majority of us are polite if we are treated politely, so don't be afraid to just ask for help. :) Busses have schedules online and if you just write "public transportation in Bucharest" or "how to get to Bucharest from Prague, by bus" on Google, it will tell you what you need to know; Google Maps is also very popular in Romania, so.. :) I don't know.. it's not that different than going to.. just another state in the USA, right? :)) You, Americans, think that you're going to such a different place when coming to Europe... and you are right. It is different, just never for the reasons that you thought it will be. :)

unfortunately this country, which is a country with nice weather and nature, has a terrible problem of vandalism as everybody can see with the streets full of graffitti everywhere.. that happens in most other Western countries too... On the contrary, it is hard to see one graffiti in Russia, so that tells you the big difference in societies....Russia: extremely polite and full of beautiful women. The West: very rude and practically no beautiful women anywhere. So choose: to live surrounded by graffitti and vandals or to live surrounded by politeness and very beautiful women. Actually Ukraine is much more similar to Russia than to the West, as everybody can see, with little vandalism and also full of beautiful women.

Regarding the shoe situation , think about Japanese tradition of taking the shoes of when entering a living space, it would be regarded as extremely rude to enter someone's house with your shoes on , it's exactly the same in Romania, you take the dirty street shoes off before entering someone's home. It's the same concept in the gym it's borrowed from Romanian tradition , sometimes the host would tell a guest to just enter the house and not take the shoes off and just come right in , in this case one is expected to disregard the host and should take the shoes off anyway 😄. @@iceblu4713 1. I think that the times of Greatness of Romania were associated with Ceausescu, when he did what he considered necessary for Romania, and not for the USSR. For the Soviet leadership, he has always been a difficult ally, who gets from them what he demands. Who is the President of Romania now?? I don't know and it doesn't matter. In Europe, only Orbán is still capable of saying "No. This is not suitable for Hungary." In Russia, we respect the ability of leaders to defend their rights not by waving a vote placards or by sweet speeches, but by real action. A real leader must be able to go against the stream. 2. I don’t understand why a third of Moldovans want to become Eastern Romania and loose their sovereignty, if even the Romanians themselves are leaving the country (4 million citizens out of 20 million prefer to live away from their Motherland). This is not a question of “freedom”, it is a question of the demand of citizens and the prospects of country. 3. In Russia the attitude towards Romanians is calm, I have never heard anything bad or even dubious from anyone about them.
