My First Drive in the Maserati MC12 - What a Legend!

The Maserati MC12 is a legend, and a very rare one at that too as officially only 50 of the standard road cars were ever built. Sharing a platform and engine with the Ferrari Enzo it's a big, bad V12 monster with the added bonus of a removable roof and presence on the road that cannot be compared with anything else.
During a day with Greg / gregb.23 he very kindly threw the keys my way and offered me the opportunity to go for a drive in what can only be a described as a unicorn car - this is one I never thought I could even dream to put 'on my list', let alone actually experience!
Without being too technical because time was short and the car is excruciatingly valuable, what a behemoth of a machine it is. Armed with a bypass valve for as much noise as you could imagine, the intake above your head sucking air through to the engine and an amount of drama on the road that's virtually incomparable, this was certainly one of the experiences of my lifetime.
When we returned, we take a quick look at the LaFerrari's electric mode, and the Mercedes 6x6's self-inflating tyre system. Boys and their toys...

Bay M I've owned an SMG3 equipped car (E60 M5). There is no "wrong" way to drive it. You can help it along by lifting at the right time, granted. But ... under no circumstance will you make it completely useless like this gearbox in the vid.

There's a (few) reason(s) for why he didn't keep his 675LT Coupe. If you thought a 675LT Spider is expensive, you can multiply it by 3-4 for an MC12. And that's for a 12 year old car which, in part because of a single clutch automated transmission and a naturally aspirated engine, just isn't faster.

No doubt, and it's amazing for what it is. However with cars like this, you have a 7-figure (in $, € or £) garage trophy, and so you still need a car you can (at least semi-) daily drive. As an investment it's great, but you do need the money to buy it (plus a car you can actually use) in the first place.

It's not faster, bc Ferrari wouldn't allow it, so they had to restrict the engine power. Otherwise the car is superior to the Enzo.

Maserati designed and built the car on the chassis of the Enzo Ferrari, but the final car is much larger and has a lower drag coefficient.

I’ve always found the MC12 to be a better-looking version of the Enzo. While the Enzo may be the faster, nimbler car, the Maserati will always be my preference.

Is the transmission slow or are you lifting off the gas on the upshifts? I've driven an F430 Scuderia and an Enzo (same time period of production) and don't remember the transmissions lagging as much between gears. Either way, the car is a beauty!

Well since it shares the same transmission as the Enzo (but tuned to different gear ratios), it should feel pretty similar. Although I bet the way you drive has a big impact on how the changes happen (where hard driving typically gives better shifts, and slow speed shifts often turn into clunky or long shifts). Haven't driven either though, but to my ears it just sounds like clunky low speed shifts of racing transmissions

Tim, I think that you really need to step-up your game in the audio department ! It's such an important part of the overall car driving experience ! Not to mention that it's one of the few that you can share us through your videos :) The onboard audio is absolutely terrible... Seriously, it hurts. But with minor effort and complication for your shootings, you could bring us a decent sound with the use of a lavallier microphone (with deadcat of course because of the wind) and/or an external sound recorder, like a ZOOM H5 or similar :)
