My first (and only), driving lesson was also at 30. I kangarooed the car 30 yards down the road and then crashed it into a garden rockery. I said “nope” then got out of the car and got the bus home. Never heard from the instructor or the driving school again. That was 20 years ago. I have no intention of trying again.

I did manage to pass the test at 19, and I drove my parents' car sometimes, but I was scared for my life all the time. I'm 40+ and perfectly happy with public transport. Driving is not for everyone. Just like everything else in this world I guess. 🤔

@@buskergirljust think what a service your doing to the climate too, I think it’s great if you don’t need to drive! Living in Canada while there is transportation within cities and most towns it’s damned impossible, only around the largest cities can you leave and visit other areas nearby, otherwise it’s too sparsely populated and towns are 100km away from each other, bus or train is far and few between. Europe, Japan, can think of many places where a license isn’t needed but it’s hard here unless you don’t mind starting in one area. I drive for work about 1000km a week doing homecare, so many jobs are dependent on it. I think it’s wonderful if you can manage without driving !!

My first driving lesson, I reversed into the only building on 160 acres. My dad said nothing, but I did catch him checking for scratches later on. I drive an automatic now, but only going forward. My unlicensed son often reverses for me. Shame!

When I was fifteen, I learned to drive an automatic. When I was nineteen, my father decided I needed to know how to drive a stick shift. As he taught me to drive the automatic, we thought it would be fine. Let me say this, we did not laugh as you did. Our house was only three houses away from a stop sign. By the time I got to the stop sign, my father was yelling at me and I was in tears. My brother taught me after that.

Same. My father was a rather high rank in law enforcement and I was quite impressed with him I must say. So when he said “You can take a right and then you can go straight, through the stop sign.” Well I thought he must have privileges so I went STRAIGHT THROUGH the stop sign instead of straight, through the stop sign. I didn’t get my license until I was 19.

Wow, as I farm girl that's been driving since I was 9, this must be so painful to try to do as an adult. So much stress. The expectations of learning early in life are much lower. And your instructor wasn't screaming at you "Get your foot off the clutch once you are moving - they are expensive to replace! I'm pulling it out of your wages!' Which confused me because I didn't get paid to work on the farm.
