Great video as always. Just preordered two era 300s for rear surround replacements, ( I’m currently using sonos ones). I’ve been waiting for sonos to make Dolby Atmos speakers that I can use for surrounds. I currently have the ARC and Sub, and luckily my living room ceiling isn’t that high and are flat. So shouldn’t have issues with sounds bouncing everywhere. I’m happy you said how amazing the 300s sound as surrounds. Can’t wait.

I have the One SL's for my rears. I'm also considering upgrading to 2 Era 300's as my rears. Even though the rears don't care too much of the overall sound!!! At almost $1200 including 2 stands *OUCH*! I may wait to see what others have to say about them as rears before I drop another $1200 on my surround system.

Great video as always, thank you! And thank you for the upfront summary. I still watch through, but it's nice to know the outcome upfront. I was ready to pull the trigger on pre-ordering a few days ago but held off and I'm glad I did. You summed things up perfectly for what I wanted to know, and I'll wait for the 500's to come out. I sort of want to still buy the 100's and 300's, as I'm a big Sonos fan, but I just don't know how I would use them. I still would like to see some sort of high-end speaker, and some sort of home theater switching unit so that you could connect a bunch of 4k/120 sources to a Sonos home theater setup. I would also like to see a competitor to the Nakamichi Dragon soundbar and surround setup.

Yes. It will be a massive difference. If you move to the era 100 I won’t recommend. But to era 300 yes.

@@PeterPee Surrounds. I have Sonos one as surround right now with the arc and sub gen 3. I always wanted something fuller as surrounds. Sonos five are an overkill for the size of my living room so I think that the 300 hit the sweet spot. Plus Dolby atoms of course.

Hey Peter. I’m using my 1s as rear surround and considering replacing them with the 300s. However, they sit on a shelf so the upward firing speakers would hit the shelf instead of bouncing off the ceiling. Do you know if there’s settings in the app to compensate for that?

No. The angle is fixed and software won’t change that. The directivity is also high as the waves are guided through a deep horn. Not ideal to put in a shelf. Will be addressing this in the next video.

No you can’t. For surrounds you need two. And they need to be the same.

Yes, they are significantly bigger than the Ones/Era 100. But smaller than the Fives. Quite a lot smaller.

Finally replaced my Play:1s yesterday (convinced the wife as a Father’s Day gift 😅) for the rears and I gotta say I can hear a big difference. Much fuller sound stage. Much richer and cleaner at the same eq settings. Arc+sub gen 3+Era 100s 👌🏽

You don't need to upgrade the sub. The gen 2 sub is still as good as the gen 3 sub. Although if you want another sub to go onto the system for dual sub you will need the second to be a gen 3 sub.

I have the same set-up; but, with a Gen 1 Beam. It sounds fantastic already. I imagine the Era 100 do sound better; but, not $500 better over my current rear surround One SLs.

Peter great reviews. Have you any insight into AirPlay not working on Sonos speakers? My beam gen 1 and Sonos 1 gen 1 speakers are both giving me a pop up saying unable to AirPlay to respective devices. The Sonos app still identified these speakers as one THH at you can air play to but just gives that pop up when I try. I’ve rest the speaker and added them back in the app and airplay works and goes out again this has been happening for about 5 months now

So I just tried out an Apple HomePod stereo pair as a replacement for my Sonos Play:5 in my office, I was underwhelmed by the audio quality, but I did enjoy the spatial effect. In your review of the Eras you mentioned the bass is lacking in the Era 300 compared to the Five. Do you think 2x Era 300s paired with a Sub or Sub Mini would make up for that deficit? Or do you think the overall sound quality and listening experience would still be better out of two Fives without a sub?

If it’s purely for music the fives will do better. If you really want the spatial audio then you have to go for the era 300. When I say bass lacking, I meant it’s lesser than the fives but by no means lacking.

Peter being the era 100’s have two speakers in them aren’t they more comparable to the play:3 as a replacement? I’d love to see that comparison. From what I’m seeing era 100’s are really the replacement for the play:3’s the era 300’s are a whole new category (the Sonos 4’s so to speak) and the five is still untouched.

Fives untouched yes.There should be a Era 500 on the horizon as I see it. The Era 300s in terms of size is close to the Play:3 than the Ones. In terms of bass drivers, the Ones have 1, Play:3 has two. Era 100 has 1. So I am still more inclined to think of the era 100 as Ones replacement. Although the sound quality is subjectively better than the Play:3s from 12 years ago already.

Peter you are master of your craft, thank you for your reviews. You are the reason why I bought the Arc. If I'm streaming movies through Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video will the ERA300 be much of an audio upgrade over the One's, from an Atmos perspective? I find the streaming services a bit lacking with Atmos, even the movies that are labeled Atmos, don't typically provide an immersive experience that Atmos claims you will experience. I find that 99% of the sound comes from the ARC, you get an occasional sound from the Ones. I've never experienced Atmos sound from the ARC upfiring speakers or side firing speakers, IE sound that is above me or goes from in front of me, over my head, to behind me. BTW the SONOS app tells me I'm getting Atmos when I'm playing an Atmos labeled movie. Once again thank you for your reviews, you are one of the few people on KZbin that I seek out advice from. You are an audiophile master.

Atmos from almost all upward firing reflected atmos speakers are going to come across as subtle. It won't be very clearly from the ceiling. The ERA 300s sound like they are more of the Arc, but note that the upward firing tweeter in the Sonos Era 300 is horn loaded so they could come across as a little louder and more directional.

You'll want to look at your "System" settings in the Sonos S2 App and look at the ARC speaker to see whether you are getting lossy DD+ Atmos or the full lossless Atmos experience. I have a Sony TV which only ever plays Atmos in DD+ lossy format from the TV apps. But I realised using a modern 4k Apple TV allows me to get full lossless Atmos through some streaming services. The extra substance and clarity delivered in the sound stage by lossless Atmos is quite noticeable and worth the price of a device like a 4k Apple TV in my opinion for anyone who is sensitive to sound quality.

Hi Peter, I currently have a pair of Sonos Ones paired in Stereo to a Sub Gen 3 in my home office and was considering upgrading to a pair Era 300's paired with the same sub for spatial audio music streaming. When you pair the Ones with the Sub Gen 3 however, the crossover is a bit high making the sub carry some of the high bass frequencies (and thus the sub needs to be located front and center or else some frequencies seem to be coming from the edge of the room). Do You think the Era 300s have enough bass response to mesh better with the Gen 3 Sub?

The Era 100s are probably just a tad better than the play:3. The music resolution (in terms of clarity) is better and less veiled. If you are deciding on the surrounds for the three options, my order of performance as such: 1st - Era 100 2nd - Play:3 3rd - Ones

I think the Era 500 is going to come for sure. Just not sure when. It might be another 1-2 years. I think you should go for the Era 300s for surrounds and then get the 500 for music when it comes.

Agreed. For music. You just can’t find a better speaker for size and sound. I DJ on the side and own QSC’s so bass and mids/highs very important to me to recreate same sound when just home and streaming music. The five nails it.

I can't tell for sure until I try it out in my room. I don't think we are going to get 50% improvements... So have to manage expectations there. I am thinking you will get a taller soundscape but you might not notice it right away kind of levels.

This is a tough choice. Very close in terms of what you get with either setup. I’m going to suggest that you keep the beam gen 2 and then add the era 300s. The 2 ones can then be redeployed as music setup somewhere else.

I assume you get this conclusion maybe because the up-firing speaker on Era 300s might be more powerful than the Arc since they are new. Also, the Arc will be facing an upgrade since it's already several years old. The mini sub I have, can I use it in 2 different configuration? Let's say one for 5.1 system, and one for another two Sonos ones music listening configuration in kitchen since we are very close to each other.

As surrounds they will be better. But the fives aren’t shabby either because fives sound richer and fuller. The era300 as surrounds will give a lot more immersion though. Tough choice.

Interesting comments, Now i'm wondering if its worth swapping my Newly acquired Sonos 5 for the Era 300... for Music Needs, the 5 is fabulous I agree, but I got it with intentions for movies also & found I couldn't use the Sonos 5 for this wirelessly. So I'm wondering if I should wait for the Era 500?

The era 500 at this point in time is not a thing yet. If it comes it won't be soon. The fives are still going to be superior for music. But in any case ,both can't be used as surrounds and as stereo for music at the same time.

New to the ecosystem and new subscriber here! I just got an arc in our main living area (kitchen, dining, living). It’s a rather large space w 9 foot ceiling. We love listening to music for most of my use cases. However, I can likely position rears for movie nights on occasion. Am I better suited to get the fives or should I pre-order the era 300s? I got my Era 100 on Friday and I really like it. It sounds more powerful than its predecessor One, the fuller Midrange is for me the biggest difference. I use it in the kitchen, but am thinking about another place. Design and sound 👍🏼 Greetings from Hamburg

Hello Peter, I just found and apreciate your review!! I have 2 Sonos SL as surrounding speakers, I've understood you would not recommend an up grade to 2 ERA 100. May I ask you wich is the optimal distance where to place the back surrounding speakers from the listener ears?I actually have them at 25cm....

25cm is way way too close. Place them at LEAST 60 cm away. Better to get more than 120cm away at least and up to 200cm.

If you have an ARC, are upwards surrounds needed? Would the Sonos 1 or Era 100 be as good as the 300s as surrounds in an atmos setup with the ARC?

Sorry, to answer my own question. Atmos content is recorded as objects and their position, not as channels. The atmos playback device maps these objects to the number of channels that are setup. So, more is usually going to be better so long as the decoder can use them

Great video as always! I'd be tempted to upgrade my Sonos ones that are currently my surrounds - do you know if the old official Sonos stands for the ones will work with either of the new Era's? Otherwise that will be an even bigger investment if I need to replace them!

Yes, that is correct. Right now, before further testing, I am going to say the perceptible difference to your case might be small. You might get a wider soundstage but for stereo music, it is not always a good thing if you are into vocals.

2 fives. Don't even have to think. Unless you want Atmos music. I am a traditionalist when it comes to how I hear my music so for me it's two fives. Era 300 if you enjoy Atmos coded music.

I am still wondering if the era 100 will work well with sub. So I reserve my comments for now. But definitely the era 300 in a pair will do better than the era 100 in a pair without sub.

Hmmm… not sure what to do, i have two ones (gen 2) as my home theatre surround sounds (beam gen 2 sub gen3) and i dont know to replace them with a pair of era300s or just add one era300 between the two ones? Is that even possible? Or splurge and two era300s for the ultimate home theatre spatial but that’s gonna be costly, esp if the arc2 comes along this yr😅 Cant wait for your full review of the era300!

Save a bit more and go for the Era 300s. I ranked the Move higher than the Era100 simply based on sound. But the Era 100 is likely the better value as it is considerably cheaper.

I would go for the ERA 300 since you are not starting from having to upgrade. Blank canvas, as long as money is within budget, go for 300.

Well, I took the plunge and purchased the Arc and Sub - (Very impressed). I’ll get the ERA 300’s when released, and any ERA 500 if they become available. INFO UPDATE - for users wanting to connect Sonos to use with Apple HomeKit, AND SIRI, good news it does work quite well via Airplay2. (However, there are some clunky elements I can go over if anyone needs more info.) Anyway Peter, once again, thank-you for your insight and assistance. Regards Gavin
