My First Impressions of SERBIA 🇷🇸 (as a Russian)

Here is my first 10 days in Serbia! Serbians are very friendly, love dogs (not cats), they are tall and even babushkas speak English here! Well, watch the video to see more!

The statue of Stefan Nemanja is new from 2 years ago, it is made by a Russian sculptor, most Serbs were also shocked by its size, we are not used to grandiose things. The cats are all over the smaller streets, not in the main ones.

In the Balkans you use "zdravo" or "ciao" when speaking with friends. "Dobro jutro/Dobar dan/Dobro vece" is more formal and more polite. For example if a teenager told "Zdravo" to an elderly person it would be considered rude.

Brutalist buildings in Yugoslavia are partly similar to Soviet architecture, partly unique Yugoslavian, and partly inspired by the architecture of the French architect Le Corbusier. Belgrade is much more beautiful in spring and summer. Since I see that you are mainly interested in Brutalist architecture (although I am not a fan of it), there are quite a few interesting buildings that you have missed. As for old Belgrade, a lot was missed, only Republike Square and Sava Square were shown. As for English, we have it as a compulsory subject at school. From the fifth grade we have to take another foreign language (it depends from school to school, sometimes it's French, sometimes Russian, sometimes German, sometimes Italian). Another reason is that we, as Yugoslavia, unlike the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, were exposed to American and British films and series as well as music, we were something between East and West, more precisely we had something from both worlds and at the same time we were and we were not part of both worlds.

You can visit St. Sava Temple (biggest church on the Balkans), you can walk from Knez Mihailova pedestrian main street, past hotel Moskva, towards square Slavija and keep going until you get to the temple. Also church Sveti Marko or Saint Marc and park Tashmaidan is near centre, not far from the Parliament building. There is Ruski dom of culture on street Kraljice Natalije 33, there is a statue of Tzar Nikolai 2nd, not far from Hotel Moskva, just dowhill towards the park and river.

A big factor in why English is good in Serbia is that here films and tv shows have subtitles, not dubbing. Only children's shows are dubbed. So you listen to English your whole life and it's easier to pick it up. It's the same in other countries that do not use dubbing, like Romania, Greece, Portugal, Sweden...

Big factor was open society we have during communism era Yugoslavia was only country in so called communist block which was open to traveling or study to western country we have influence of western culture our shops where fully supply with western products . Soviets did not know what coca cola or jeans means till 1990 and foreign movies they could saw only on some festivals or special occasion....

Even Albert Einstein lived there for some years after marrying a local woman Mileva Marić a Serbian physicist and mathematician (1875-1948). Try also going to Niš , Serbia’s third biggest city, where many Roman Emperors like Constantine the Great (not the one known on KZbin as Inside Russia 😂) were born and raised.

Zdravo is the middle formality greeting. Dobro jutro/dobar dan/dobro veče is the top level of formality, and the lowest is ćao. To older people and to customers you don't know you would not normally say zdravo. And family members and friends normally say ćao to each other. You can say zdravo to a worker in a shop, as a customer, if the worker is close to your age or younger.

Hotel Yugoslavia was bombed by NATO in 1999. Part of hotel is still in ruins and ready to be sold. Trams are mainly old fashioned. MTS is Serbian company not Russian. English language is mandatory in school. Serbs love and respect Russia due to the historical and religion ties. I hope that 150000 Russians who found new home in Serbia are feeling good and welcome.

I would like to add that being pro-Russian does not make us anti-American by default. I would say that we are not anti-west at all. Most of the people growing up in the late 70s and later on have been heavily exposed to the American culture through western movies, cartoons, music etc. However, we are mostly anti-NATO.

Make sure you go to Kalemegdan park at the end of Knez Mihailova pedestrian street,it has a great fortress and great views. You can visit Zemun part of Belgrade,it was part of Austrohungary until end of world war 1. Then historic Skadarlija restaurant street is nice to see too. Novi Sad, Nish and other places in the North especially are pretty to see. You can take train or overnight sleeper train to Montenegro too, is visa free and beautiful there.

Go to Russian Graveyard in Belgrade, where many Russians heroes liberating Belgrade in WW2 had fallen and are buried there, and honored each year. You can take transport 12 on Slavia square, so you can see part of King Alexander's boulevard , up to New Cemetery. Nearby, go there for lunch in Zlatar kafana, where they serve wild game meals. Go visit Russian Orthodox church, just between church of St. Marko's and Serbian Parliament and post office huge building in Tasmajdan park in central Belgrade. Optional - Go to Belgrade Zoo, walk along Tzar Dushan's street and catch bus #26 on Dorcol and end up in Jerkovic. Then take bus #18 to Zemun. Then take #17 to end and take #31 in opposite direction to get you back to city center. That's to see real life outside of center.

Sorry to see you were scammed by the vending machine, but it was very kind of you to offer the coffee to the random people, you are a nice person with a good heart. About the dog shit,.here in Montreal Canada 90% of the people pick it up in small bags as well, it's considered bery bad manners not to pick it up and I've seen people yell not very nice things at people who don't pick up after their dog shits. We don't have a dog, we have cats but they always stay inside so we don't have this problem. Lidl works till 22h (10pm) even on Sundays. It is a German company I think. There are several in Belgrade as I know it is a huge supermarket. One of the cheaper.

As for metro in Belgrade, we had plans for metro since early 20th century but they always postponed it for later. Now in last few years they revived the project and Gov already started building metro depot for line 1 on the outskirts of Belgrade, they say line 1 will be built by 2027 (i don't really believe it but will see). Fun fact is that Belgrade have big network of underground tunnels that is used by railways, mostly for city railway network but also national.

I also noticed that in Serbia they accept € almost everywhere, while in Bosnia they don't, and Bosnian currency is directly connected to € with a fixed rate but they still don't accept €, and even usually have signs in multiple languages that they only accept Bosnian Marks.

19:11 Below teh Blue arrow sign it says that MAX CHANGE/RETURN is 60 dinars.So if you put 200 it will only return you 60 dinars no more.It for some reason has LIMIT put on it so you basicaly need to eighter give exact price or just a bit over.

Economy 101, Serbia is a small country of only 6.8milion people, apartments are limited resource, 100k Russian IT guys, freelancers etc came here, they have money and we Serbs are greedy, lets be honest here, so ofc prices skyrocketed, i live in Belgrade, you can't rent anything under 500 euros per month which is crazy considering median wage in Belgrade is 500 euros and average is 700... So obviously landlords don't have Serbian clients in mind but Russian IT folks. We count in Euros because our domestic currency is chained to Euro so course is always stable, that's why it's easier to count in Euros because numbers are smaller and exchange rate never changes, our currency is just cosmetic!

Thanks for explaining things! Well, but for me not only the apartments, but also the cost of products, food and so on feels expensive. Maybe especially after I travel to some cheap countries like Vietnam, Turkey and so on. But it feels even more expensive than the South Korea as well(in case of food). And sometimes even 2 times more expensive than Russia (is some cases). Taxis for example as well (but gasoline cost much more here as well)

@@CrazyRussianSergey Taxi here is considered a luxury not a commodity, also going to the restaurant. If you want cheaper food you will need to learn to cook and get in touch with farmers market and your local butcher shop. We speak English because our education, you can't finish elementary school unless you speak 2 foreign languages, English is mandatory and for second you can choose either French German Spanish or Russian, depends on the school. But English is mandatory.

Ironically, zone arround Hotel Yugoslavia is considered to be elitistic neighbourhood, not friendly to small wallets :) As same as center. But even if you venture 5-6 km toward suburbs of Belgrade, you would see serious change in prices. All we that leave in Belgrade and have famillies run away to suburbs, becasue centers of New and Old Belgrade long time ago became unlivable for plain working people...

Я сам Серб но не был дома двадцать лет :) интересно было посмотреть о своем родном городе. С годами человек теряет связь со близкими людьми, к сожалению. Я тоже когда бываю в Москве чувствую себя как дома, хотя я и русским владею норм а это помогает. Кстати до 1989. года Югославия была развита больше чем многие европейские страны восточного блока типа Польши и Чехословакии а Румыния и Болгария вообще как деревня 😂 но потом явно что то пошло не так. There is some kind of so called metro 🤣See Kalemegdan fortress when you are already in the city center (you were close just go straight from Insa clock . Maybe Ada even tho it`s not a season and it is lil cold for a walk near the lake, that`s not far...maybe Avala tower but that`s lil far. If you get time go to other towns, like Kraljevo, Prokuplje, Nis to get the real picture. Cats are much loved as same as dogs it`s just there are less of them walking the city center. I got two.

Europeans novadays speak English everywhere, many different languages in Europe so lengua franca is English, hefore WW2 it was German and before that French like the Russian upperclass also spoke French at one time..people learn English at school and it is very important to know well. And we are exposed to English by popular music and films, some countries do not have films dubbed to their language.

I'm surprised with the ammount of English speaking people. It's the "lingua franca" of the world, wihtout any doubt. What if you decide to get a free bus ride all the time just because you don't have a pass or ticket? here we can buy a ticket in the bus, it just comes out more expensive. Glad to learn about the "going prince" expression. So you guys call your own salad "Riviera"? that's crazy, everybody knows that salad is Russian! :-) Looks like an interesting city. it is interesting how serbian letters i see on your video have the letter j but is pronounced “ya” on some words but just like the letter y in others. maybe they replaced russian я and е with j ?

I don’t know but I think they didn’t have the letter Я. The Russian alphabet came from Bulgarian. But the Bulgarians didn’t have the letter Я as far as I read now until the 1945. They used some different letter.

It is not pronounced ja, it's like Y. In Serbian is "one letter - one vocal". Bulgarian and Russians have letter pronounced JA.

And people are friendly and polite as well as it is the norm in civilised societies. By the way Serbia has candidate state status to join EU together with more countries. Serbia and Montenegro have been described as the frontrunner candidates, and projected that they would join by 2025, during the next mandate of the European Commission. Ukraine and Moldova were subsequently recognised as official candidates, while Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia amongst others are recognised as potential candidates and were asked to complete additional reforms before becoming official candidates for membership. Bosnia and Herzegovina then received official candidate status in December 2022. And there are more (Georgia, Turkey, …) but Russia’s aggression towards their closest “brother country” Ukraine 🇺🇦 is focusing everyone on this outrageous war there at the moment. For further studies I recommend reading some articles in Wikipedia like „Potential enlargement of the European Union“.

So the Austrian Prince was killed by someone who had familty name Prince. Gavrilo Princip himself was not very tall and strong.
