I worked a Binns and Berry cnc centre lathe a few years ago,750 mm chuck 4 jaw 19 foot long bed.The biggest job I had on it was a drum for a printing works the shaft was 6" dia the drum itself was about 600 mm dia and the whole lot weighed three quarters of a ton. Turned it at 350 rpm and time taken to skim over it was 45 mins each cut.I had to clock it true m/c shop foreman didn't know it could be done. I left the company and got a job as a toolmaker working on injection moulding quite a change in sizes

The last of the chickens to leave the roost !!! I hope you had a couple of John Smith's as it went down the road ! I nearly picked up a Binns & Berry the next size down a while back but had to pass on it as my new shop was not complete so i would have had to pay double the crane hire to keep it in storage . I am off to the pub for lunch & a couple of coldies ! Cheers .

Hopefully the lathe is going to a machine shop just like the others, it would be a shame to see such big iron go into the smelter.
@montaguable4 жыл бұрын
As much of a shame it is that machines like that end up going to the smelter I cant believe a machine going to another shop would be handled like that. Chains over the slides , dragging along the concrete by the headstock. Can't be , I won't believe it!
@31415geon4 жыл бұрын
@@montaguable yeah the technique of the rigging fellas looks horrible, then people complain about clapped out old iron. Significant wear comes from abuse, not from use, I guess.

@@montaguable ive saw them handled worse then that going to a shop. usually they are cut up before sent for scrap so they are easier to load and move

@@Donkusdelux We move some machines from time to time but mainly only real big stuff.An acquaintance who parks his two rigging trucks at our yard does all sorts every week and I deal with machine movers all the time. Never have I seen anything like this on a machine meant to work again. Even from the rough operators and we operate in Southern Africa. All my customers would kick you up the butt in a millisecond , if we handled their machines like that.
@Donkusdelux4 жыл бұрын
@@montaguable I have moved allot of these machines, when they go for scrap they get parted out, then grabbed by an excavator and tossed around/broke up. sliding them doesnt hurt these, we see them slid around regularly, Maybe David can clarify.
