I just saw them live recently and the horn section is absolutely there with them. Chris often says that people in the record business have told him to ditch the horns and they'd be a commercial success, and Chris has always said no. It's a very important part of the band's sound and feel. Gotta respect that.

@@Bonsaipop ohh I know.. I've been there. It's just mind boggling. A lot of bands I listened to in the 90's changed their sound, some a few times, and went a little more "mainstream", and it makes me sad. But... I’ve been playing bass and singing for 22 years and this song is STILL one of the hardest because of the groove, especially the bridge. You want to match the groove with your voice and consonants but it’s all off and throws you off key. Meanwhile I’ve seen Rodger doing it drunk af perfectly lol Also, ska in particular is the happiest sounding music made by the most miserable people. Reel big fish calls it “candy coated fury” Don’t listen to the album titled that though, it’s pretty bad. RBF’s first three studio releases are solid ska gold though.

Another great reaction and breakdown. The thing you will find in a lot of ska-punk is that contrast between the subject matter in the lyrics and the music surrounding it. It is a big reason this genre has stuck with me for so long, sometimes you want to acknowledge and feel the anger, or sadness, or whatever dark emotion the lyrics bring you, but want to have that positive and upbeat music that keeps you moving forward. Keep up the great work and I look forward to taking this ride with you through punk rock discovery!

Less Than Jake are a staple of my teenagehood, especially Losing Streak, Hello Rockwiew and Borders and Bounderies. They are the masters of the "I hate the place I'm from and I can't wait to move but I could never do that and I'll always remain the way I am right now" micro-genre of punk rock songs. Once I moved out of town and went to uni abroad I kind of stopped listening to them; those songs I mentioned above got old and I felt they released too many of them, many in the album you showcased, including this song. When I came back home from Uni, their song "Scott Farkas take it...", which is one of the best example of that micro-genre of punk songs, really came back to live for me. As far as bass playing, a track that always puzzled me was "krazy glue" from Losing Streak.

You have no idea how long I've been waiting for you to get the contrast between the lyrics and (surface-level) chord progressions. Like your video on Reel Big Fish - Beer. At one point, you stated that something was a major chord (progression), because, while it sounded minor, the music was so happy and upbeat. I've been suggesting The Science of Selling Yourself Short for ages just because it makes that contrast impossible to ignore.

I would love to see you venture into punk-adjacent genres like Emo and Post-hardcore. One of my favorite bassist is Eben D'amico who was Saves the Day's bassist in the middle years. Some of my favorite bass lines would be You Vandal, Should to the Wheel, My Sweet Fracture (from Through Being Cool), At Your Funeral, Jukebox Breakdown, Freakish (from Stay What You Are), In Reverie (from In Reverie). He was eventually replaced with Manuel Carrero from Glassjaw for the next two albums which have some equally killer basslines, like Shattered, Eulogy, and 34 from Sound the Alarm, Under the Boards, Radio, Kaleidoscope, and Bye Bye Baby from Under the Boards. Unfortunately a lot of Eben's basslines are really hidden in the tracks, I'm guessing due to the fact they had much smaller budgets for their albums, so the mastering isn't as good. A good ear like yours would be able pick out the nuance and skill. The production gets better by miles each album and Carrero's line are front and center. Those albums are also much heavier than the earlier stuff which is possibly due to Glassjaw's influence .

Roger actually sang a lot on Losing Streak but he had a more typical punk sounding voice. If you're not listening for it, you wouldn't even notice a difference between his voice and Chris'. to give you a little more(very little) explanation about the rhythm figure that Chris was doing(around the 7:00 mark), it’s called a stick line. It’s a muted line that typically is just a doubling of the bass, but it can also do its own thing too. I wanna say it came to prominence during the rocksteady era, from a guy named Lynn Taitt, but it then carried through to reggae as well(not that 90’s bands worried all that much about tradition 😁). I remember reading in an interview, he said that he took the idea from what steel pan players would do, in calypso songs
