Absolutely! Never hear that album given the credit it deserves. “All my best friends are metalheads” was the first song I ever heard from them, and I bought the album that day. Been hooked since. “Losing streak” is up there with rockview too. Those two and “anthem” are amongst the few albums I can listen front to back on repeat for months at a time. Love these guys.

I just saw them live recently and the horn section is absolutely there with them. Chris often says that people in the record business have told him to ditch the horns and they'd be a commercial success, and Chris has always said no. It's a very important part of the band's sound and feel. Gotta respect that.

@@41nickdawgthe music industry is about conforming and making money, they don’t care if you’re a ska band. @@Bonsaipop ohh I know.. I've been there. It's just mind boggling. A lot of bands I listened to in the 90's changed their sound, some a few times, and went a little more "mainstream", and it makes me sad. But... I do understand that they make the decision for themselves and that's completely okay. Doesn't negate the fact that they're talented musicians.

"The happier edge of the music is kind of a misdirection.... it's kind of like: you got this" And this approach gets everyone singing along, so it's this empowering moment where we're all smiling as we belt out "I'll siiiing along..." None of us is alone although it might seem it. But not when we're singing along to this.

I’ve been playing bass and singing for 22 years and this song is STILL one of the hardest because of the groove, especially the bridge. You want to match the groove with your voice and consonants but it’s all off and throws you off key. Meanwhile I’ve seen Rodger doing it drunk af perfectly lol Also, ska in particular is the happiest sounding music made by the most miserable people. Reel big fish calls it “candy coated fury” Don’t listen to the album titled that though, it’s pretty bad. RBF’s first three studio releases are solid ska gold though.

Another great reaction and breakdown. The thing you will find in a lot of ska-punk is that contrast between the subject matter in the lyrics and the music surrounding it. It is a big reason this genre has stuck with me for so long, sometimes you want to acknowledge and feel the anger, or sadness, or whatever dark emotion the lyrics bring you, but want to have that positive and upbeat music that keeps you moving forward. Keep up the great work and I look forward to taking this ride with you through punk rock discovery!

Another great one Mark! Appreciate you pointing out the dichotomy between punk music and lyrics. My big initial draw to the scene was the energy, but also that it made me feel not alone in my thoughts/fears/hopes, etc. Like I’d finally found “my people”. Punks wear their hearts on their sleeves and to me this makes them some of the most introspective and relatable lyricists out there.

Less Than Jake are a staple of my teenagehood, especially Losing Streak, Hello Rockwiew and Borders and Bounderies. They are the masters of the "I hate the place I'm from and I can't wait to move but I could never do that and I'll always remain the way I am right now" micro-genre of punk rock songs. Once I moved out of town and went to uni abroad I kind of stopped listening to them; those songs I mentioned above got old and I felt they released too many of them, many in the album you showcased, including this song. When I came back home from Uni, their song "Scott Farkas take it...", which is one of the best example of that micro-genre of punk songs, really came back to live for me. As far as bass playing, a track that always puzzled me was "krazy glue" from Losing Streak.

I find it really intersting how you see the dissonence between the style and subject matter. As someone who has struggled with depression and anxiety my whole life, I'd say it speaks more to the masking we do, hiding the struggle and difficulties behind an upbeat front, pretending nothing is wrong when in fact we're at breaking point, rather than a silver lining.

You have no idea how long I've been waiting for you to get the contrast between the lyrics and (surface-level) chord progressions. Like your video on Reel Big Fish - Beer. At one point, you stated that something was a major chord (progression), because, while it sounded minor, the music was so happy and upbeat. I've been suggesting The Science of Selling Yourself Short for ages just because it makes that contrast impossible to ignore.

I would love to see you venture into punk-adjacent genres like Emo and Post-hardcore. One of my favorite bassist is Eben D'amico who was Saves the Day's bassist in the middle years. Some of my favorite bass lines would be You Vandal, Should to the Wheel, My Sweet Fracture (from Through Being Cool), At Your Funeral, Jukebox Breakdown, Freakish (from Stay What You Are), In Reverie (from In Reverie). He was eventually replaced with Manuel Carrero from Glassjaw for the next two albums which have some equally killer basslines, like Shattered, Eulogy, and 34 from Sound the Alarm, Under the Boards, Radio, Kaleidoscope, and Bye Bye Baby from Under the Boards. Unfortunately a lot of Eben's basslines are really hidden in the tracks, I'm guessing due to the fact they had much smaller budgets for their albums, so the mastering isn't as good. A good ear like yours would be able pick out the nuance and skill. The production gets better by miles each album and Carrero's line are front and center. Those albums are also much heavier than the earlier stuff which is possibly due to Glassjaw's influence .

Roger actually sang a lot on Losing Streak but he had a more typical punk sounding voice. If you're not listening for it, you wouldn't even notice a difference between his voice and Chris'. I think Hello Rockview is really the first album he tried to separate his voice from Chris' (he sang lead on All my Friends Are Metalheads) and then Borders and Boundaries was the album where he started to really expand his range a bit. I was a huge fan of Losing Streak but now a days, I can't picture LTJ without Roger's current vocal style.

Your LTJ connection story is awesome. I first heard Goldfinger in 1996 on the radio... exactly one time. It was the song 'Here in Your Bedroom'. As soon as MP3's became popular around 1998-1999, I went on the hunt for that song. I had no idea what the song was, or what it actually sounded like. I just had the part "you have changed, 'cause I still feel the same" in memory. I'm surprised that I actually found the song... and it ignited my love for ska punk.

to give you a little more(very little) explanation about the rhythm figure that Chris was doing(around the 7:00 mark), it’s called a stick line. It’s a muted line that typically is just a doubling of the bass, but it can also do its own thing too. I wanna say it came to prominence during the rocksteady era, from a guy named Lynn Taitt, but it then carried through to reggae as well(not that 90’s bands worried all that much about tradition 😁). I remember reading in an interview, he said that he took the idea from what steel pan players would do, in calypso songs

Decescendo is still one of my favorite songs ever. I was blown away and stopped everything the first time I heard it and I still react the same today. I still feel like I haven't heard anything like it.

@@samvakarian Decrescendo is an absolute masterpiece. It was also the first song I ever learned on drums that I could play all the way through without having to have the music in the background.

As weird as this is, i’ve always loved both ska-punk and bluegrass, and i think the common thread is the often sad lyrics with upbeat music. Gives it a unique quality, glad to hear you point that out!

He's danced around FIF without taking the dive. Newest album ever is great, but I think some of the newer songs are great, too. Would love to see what he has to say about Battle Dancing Unicorns With Glitter

Hell yeah. Both Keith and Scott have some killer bass lines during the two major iterations of the band. Would love to see an analysis of Keith’s bass parts in “Fistful of Sand” or “All That is Good,” or Scott’s lines in “Bullfight for an Empty Ring” or “Renegades.” Honestly, of all the legacy 90s ska acts, I wish Five Iron got more attention. They’ve arguably never been better - IMO, their most recent album may be the best work they’ve ever done.

Man how have you been doing all this punk and Ska music on your channel and you haven't done any jeff rosenstock yet? I wish I had something to recommend, but he literally has so much damn good music that it's hard to pick. If you're looking for Ska, I recommend his first band, the arrogant sons of bitches, and for more punk stuff his solo material is amazing. Please do a Jeff reaction at some point!

This is one of my favorite LTJ tracks. Way underrated. I've seen them like 5-6 times live and they always kill it. And I've related to the mood of this song way too much in the last few years. Getting to the point in life when everyone who raised you starts to pass on is rough.
