Man, Bad Religion is one of the all-time greats; glad I can re-experience their music through you! There's basically two eras of Bad Religion: before and after Stranger Than Fiction - this is primarly due to a split that happened with one half of their primary songwriters, Brett Gurewitz. Process of Belief, the full album you did, was Brett's coming back to the band, reinvigorated. As far as the before era, their compositions are very similar to what you described in Generator: full of themes, and using the song as a device to explore those themes. One admiriable thing about the band, is every member is basically an absolute killer of their instrument, but they never let their hubris get in the way of servicing the composition. Absolutely brilliant stuff. Some 'before era' tracks to check out that really highlight Bentley's playing: Anesthesia Sanity All Good Soldiers Inner Logic (according to Jay, he considers this his most difficult to perform live) And I think BR's GOAT track that showcases just how absolutely talented each member is (in the 'after era): Submission Complete It has a 4/5 drum solo in it - how can you not want that??
@makingenemies
@makingenemies Ай бұрын
Finally someone crediting Submission Complete as a masterpiece. It is nothing less than this. The peak of Wackerman in his stint at BR. The rest of the band tries to fit Brooks‘ drumming there as does Jay, too. Hard to swallow that song as in between snack. Made only for careful listening

Imho the best bass lines by Jay Bentley are in the Stranger Than Fiction album. He explained in an interview that he sometimes records his tracks twice: one basic before the vocals are recorded, and then a new version once the song is done to find where he can enhance the melody with the bass. I don't know which year he started doing that but it's so wise. His melodic boost is why he is my favourite punk bass player.

Bad Religion is one of my favorite bands, so I'm looking forward to seeing more of them on the channel. was just saying I miss Brooks! Welcome to the New Dark Ages has been on repeat the last 6 days or so. Love his fills and the guitar playing on that. Love Empire Strikes First too!

The empire strikes first album probably has the best, and most polished drumming out of all their records.

Bad Religion have a prog album... that was destroyed and removed from their discography. It's still possible to find it on KZbin. It was called Into the unknown.

If you look into later live recordings, you'll see how much they change this song. It stays hard, but somehow, maybe even more melodic.

I don't know if they still do.... but Greg and Brett used to write the music on piano first. It helps it make sense.

You should check out this band called The Letterbombs, the bass work is crazy. I'd suggest All for Nothing or Space Between. Also Bad Religion is amazing, thank you for doing a dive into their work.

Jay is also known for using Jack Casady style basses as well. Bad Religion talks about being fans of 60s/70s prog rock. If you really want to experience something interesting review a song from their second album Into the unknown.

Bad Religion is the only band that can sing "The brown and orange sky holds its breath as the sun retreats to the distant horizon, and our hearts palpitate anxiously, as we soon will lay supine and wait for sleep to overcome us" which is Graffinian for "The sun has set, we go to bed". Fantastic band, brilliant songs with even more brilliant lyrics and great musicians all around.

"the sun has set, we're anxious and nervous but once we lay down, looking up, at said sky, we let the sleep take us" sounds like about 11pm on Nov 5th at my house :(

Greg probably has the smartest lyrics in music ever, the way he can slip in words that almost everyone wouldn't be able to use is incredible.

Bad Religion is my favorite band. It’s the lyrical sophistication and the beautiful compositions and melodies that one wouldn’t think of from punk. Greg Graffin takes influence from so many styles and genres. Hell, he even has albums of Americana music. Each BR album has a “flavor” that makes it unique in the discography, but they are all clearly and definitively Bad Religion.

Nice reaction! Love these guys since the early 90s… fast guitar chords, melody overflow and these harmonies… if you like these choruses, check out their official Christmas album! Ear candy! Jay Bentley is such a solid bassist, on some albums they could have given him a little more space in the mix. Thanks, greetings from Germany 👍🤘

This was one of the first bands I ever heard. Great live show I've seen a few times. Very good writers; really enjoy harmonies in the vocals. I disagree with the world view they place into their music, but I've never heard a song they put together that wasn't remarkably built.
