The bridge is about a woman who denies her queer self and feelings and marries a man only to regret it later - the lyrics make more sense once you see it from this perspective. I won't be the only one to suggest this but give her Tiny Desk performance a go. It is amazing.

Chappell Roan did the backing vocals on two tracks by Olivia Rodrigo (these are "Lacy" and a single "Can't Catch Me Now")

beyond the vocals, for me its the KICK she does after “good luck” after the breakdown and high belts. Shes extremely aware of herself and how she appears on stage/camera. Such a performer.

The song is written from the perspective of a (young) woman being in love with another woman. The person the narrator is in love with does not want to commit to a homosexual relationship though / doesn't want to call it love. Years later the love interest is married to a man, and does not seem happy with being "nothing more than his wife", - it's heavily implied that the love interest denied being attracted to women because that's what society still expects / how she wanted to see herself. The narrator told her way back that it was more than a phase/love, and that is where the 'I told you so' comes in. The "You can kiss a hundred boys in bars" also means no matter how many boys she kisses trying to find the right one/the one she'll be into, she won't find him because she's simply attracted to women. BTW; I am sure you saw it, but Sabrina Carpenter did a cover of this song in the live lounge, it's a different arrangement and the vibe is quite different, but it's also beautiful.

I've just discovered her about a month ago. She's the pop princess of the moment and I have to admit she has a phenomenal voice and asthetic. She's also been at it for a decade, she is not an overnight success.

I got into this artist a year ago, she is really good, but what stood out for me, Roan's catchy singing style reminds me of Toyah Wilcox for some reason. I think Roan would do a good cover of "I want To Be Free". Roan is something special, the song has so many subtle quick catchy changes throughout. It is definitely worth checking out her whole album. It is finally great you discovered this artist at the right time. I am kicking myself discovering a couple of artists late this year: "Against The Current", through the track "Good Guy" and "The Warning" (Mexican 3 piece all-girl band), through the track "Six Feet Deep".

Chappell and Sabrina are the new generation of artists that have amazing tones and vocals that appeal to older listeners too. The quality is there. It's the opposite to the mumble singing that was dominating.

Chappell Roan is the most refreshing artist to me right now in the west. She's the new gaga for me. Like she pushes the quirky, extreme visuals of popstars again. And vocally she is soo good! This analysis just supports that. Hi Nina! Not sure if i should insert it here, but i do not know how else to do a request. Would you be interested in doing a vocal analysis on a ppop girl group who's making noise at the moment?? They are called Bini! I was hoping if you could do an analysis on their live performance on Wish Bus with their song "Karera" or their live performance of their latest single "Cherry On Top" at KCON LA.'s yt channel. Really hoping you would.

The song is about a woman denying her true sexuality… “you can say that we are nothing but you know the truth” this girl made Chappell feel like a fool and Chappell is sarcastically telling her good luck… at the same time you can hear the passion she had for her amidst the frustration… “I don’t wanna call it off but you don’t wanna call it love” 🤍🤍 Denying sexuality… you’d have to stop the word just to stop the feeling!!!!

This is one of my favourite songs by her she’s such an amazing upcoming artist and your reaction was so lovely. Chappell is a lesbian and the song is about comphet (compulsory heterosexuality) where her lover couldn’t get past social expectations and so ends up in a loveless marriage to a man, and the song goes into the regret and “I told you so” of it. It’s a really beautiful and nuanced song imo but without context the song can be a little much to grasp on first listen through. Thank you for your reaction to her! If you haven’t already I recommend checking out her tiny desk performance or her album in general “the rise and fall of a Midwest princess”

Hi, Nina. Did we do this yesterday? Am I have deja vu? I do think that time itself is rather a paradox and the groundhogs are knocking at the door. The past is timeless, the future is boundless and the present is a tiny sliver of a memory from a moment ago. Am I really here? In any case I'll see you next time... or last time?

But what’s also amazing about this song is that there’s room for ambiguity about the complexity of relationships in general. You could swap “…You could kiss a thousand boys…” for “girls” and the song then applies to heterosexual relationships too. Ultimately, I don’t think it matters. The song is a desperate, striking cry for love and affection, and the gut-wrenching pain of rejection. It’s chilling! 👏🙌🫶

No, this is a lesbian song about the lesbian experience, stop trying to erase the little representation that us lesbians have when there are already billions of other hetero songs, you are a privileged straight woman showing her privilege here

@@lauracurriero303 Who said I was heterosexual? Or that I don’t support and celebrate gay music also? I’m just saying that there’s *some* room for interpretation, so the brilliance of the song is that it’s ultimately about unrequited love, that everyone can relate to.
