The album is fantastic, her NPR tiny desk concert is a joy, she's unique with her voice, songwriting, performance and fabulous aesthetic

Yes! Album first, it's a fantastic piece of art as a whole. But the vocals and arrangement of the Tiny Desk concert are a Femininomenon.

Drag is all about creating a character for performing; anyone can be a drag queen on king regardless of gender! As a general rule of thumb drag queens typically create more fem characters and drag kings create more masc characters though it all comes down to how the performer identifies at the end of the day. Chappell has talked about her stage persona as a drag queen and it helps her create a distinction between her stage persona and herself outside of drag similar to Hannah Montana haha. Thanks for taking the time to give your reaction to her performance! :)

yeah thats why lady gaga is also a drag queen as is chappel

Oh my gosh, PLEASE react to her album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. She's soo incredibly talented and very much a 2020s version of Cher meets Lady Gaga. And as much as we compare to others like I just did, she's so unique. If you are looking for a more emo song of hers I highly recommend California. It's my current fave depression song 😅 As far as the drag, she has said in interviews that she really doesn't like all the stuff that comes with fame/celebrity and that having a drag persona on stage helps her stay grounded and separate when she's just herself.

I LOVE how you clocked her being an “artists artist” so to speak. It’s funny because she’s infamous for opening a song at a festival by saying she’s your favorite artists favorite artist. As for your questions about drag - drag is gender performance, it can be drag even when a woman performs femininity. In her early days, chappell was getting ready to perform at a small venue and a drag queen told her that she was doing drag and she embraced it from there. Anyways I’m looking forward to more of your reactions of her music. I think you would like My Kink is Karma

Do the album. I had heard about her for a few months but didn’t stop and listen until news of Lollapalooza happened. But my god. The girl is good. My first full listen to her album I added 7 songs to my library. Crazy for a debut. Edited: Please. (My opening sentence sounds rude when I reread it sorry about that)

i love chappell, she’s so creative and her voice is fantastic. her whole album (the rise and fall of a midwest princess) is terrific but if you’re only checking out a few songs i recommend casual, california, and maybe red wine supernova 🍷

I just listened to her for the first time on Sunday. I am smitten. It's like Dolly Parton and Cyndi Lauper had a baby or something. B52s. I don't know, but I love it. NPR Tiny Desk concert is amazing. I think my favorites from the album are Pink Pony Club, I Picture You, My Kink is Karma and Casual. The album is great.

Chappell's album is fun! Pretty good effort for a debut, and a handful of genuinely top-tier tracks (Sabrina Carpenter also did a cover of this song which I did also enjoy) It's also been a decade (since Lady Gaga tbh) since we've had this kind of concept mainstream pop act

I am highly interested in seeing you experience the album AND her tiny desk performance. I bet you'd at least enjoy a couple of songs there. My faves off her debut are Casual, Red Wine Supernova, Pink Pony Club, California, My Kink is Karma, and HOT TO GO! ❤️ EDIT: She sounds like Kate Bush here, true. But she's so vocally talented that she's a total chameleon. Sometimes she sounds like Cyndi Lauper, sometimes Madonna, sometimes David Bowie but uniquely HER, if that makes sense.

I see that little smile creeping up! Next time youre having a mediocre/bordering shitty day put this song on and just sit outside or go for a drive. I have a gen z daughter and I love so much music she introduces me to lately. VERY 80's inspired. Im sure she gets sick of hearing my old ass tell her that, LOL!

As someone who worked part time in production, Chappel Roan really did balance the 'rise and fall' of her album well. It folds in some of her previous singles, and was almost named after the first track (except none of her friends could pronounce it). Very 80s pop, it holds boppy club songs, slow sad songs, and is pretty open about sex.

Absolutely bloody love this song. Her voice is incredible, especially in the mid-section. And the lyrics! 'You'd have to stop the world just to stop the feeling'? Chills! This version is great, but I personally prefer the live version from Coachella, which is grubbier and grimier and her band are a bit more to the fore.

My first watch too. If I was feeling mean I'd say derivative but actually it's so fun with it. I mean every line could sound like someone else, yes picking up a lot of Cindi Lauder on the quieter bits and because it's late on a school night I'm blanking on names, a bit of Florence and some Gaga for the sheer power. Definitely worth investigating further. Currently the backing music is sludge and uninteresting but ...
