There is a great interview with Justin Tranter talking about the process of cowriting “My Kink is Karma” and “Good Luck, Babe” with her, and in it he says the first time I ever heard her he pressed ‘play’ on “Pink Pony Club” and went “well, that maybe the greatest song I’ve ever heard” for the exact same elements you are describing here… a classical almost American songbook standard that turns into a dance record. :) 8:28

The catchy sudden vocal changes, Chappell Roan reminds me of a young Toyah Willcox. It is hard to put in words, Chappell brings her music alive and the guitars solos are so welcome, especially as I am a Rock / Metaller. 🤘

I've only become aware (and appreciated) CR over the last few months. Other suggestions are Good Luck, Babe (on the Fallon show) recently, Red Wine Supernova (on Colbert show) earlier this year, plus acoustic performance(s) on NPR Tiny Desk earlier in 2024. My Kink is Karma really appeals to me, plus California and Kaleidoscope (live or studio) are achingly beautiful. I can't remember the last time that I saw such a raw and honest performer come along - maybe Robbie Williams, but CR has lots of 80s good influences (plus Country, etc.) too.

It's basically a confirmation of Icon Status (above Star and Superstar) when you do that microphone to the audience, fully expecting they'll all sing along, and the resulting sound picked up is even louder than YOUR mike.

when she first released this song it was with her old label, after the song did not perform well, her old label dropped her. she moved back to the mid west until Dan Nigro synced up with her again and signed Chappell to a new label and she moved back to CA. Chappell had to wait for Dan to finish wrapping up Olivia Rodrigo’s work first. anyhow, Chappell was just ahead of the times. the song California is about her experience getting dropped from her old label and having to move back.
