Public charging is a rip off unless you have a Tesla, so best to stick with home charging octopus (7.5p per kwh). Remember as well public charging should be compared to filling up at motorway stations as that's where people tend to use them tbh For me personally Tesla Model Y I do 300 miles for about £5 from home.

@@andyc9331 dumb response indeed. no, for Dan's journey I would of done this without public charging once. If you do public charge use zapmap and find cheaper charges at different locations rather than main motorway stations. And yes it will be pricy, but an EV will save you an absolute fortune (For me over £300 a month) if you are doing up to 150 miles from your home.

@@hydraflyer Yeah buy a £40k car to go 150 miles away from your home cos going farther is too expensive....EV`s are good (for now) if all you do is go a few miles from your home but is it? How much you overpay for the car at the dealers? How much for your insurance? Any accidents where there is possibility that battery pack is damaged? Also check out EV fires, good stuff.

Maybe but you've got to spend 30k or more on a Tesla in the first place. You can buy a used diesel for 2k and fill up in 5 mins and drive to Scotland.

The trick is to fill at home overnight to 100% when about to drive a good distance the next day. The Kia Soul is good for 250 miles even in poor weather so only one very short top-up at expensive motorway prices would be required to complete the round trip and get back to the cheap home charger.

Last December I was considering a new car so I decided to try and find out how an EV would work on one of my regular journeys. I downloaded Zap map to give me an overview of places I could charge if I were driving an EV. The first charger on my route I could use was 45 miles from home, the next two were out of service, and the next at 188 miles was working but at 7Kw would have taken hours to charge. I could have driven off my route to charge adding 20 to 30 miles to my journey and with no idea of how long it would take. I was unable to charge at my journeys end, 188 miles and the charger down the road 2kw could only be used for 2 hours. In the end, driving my ICE car I drove all the way, parked up for 4 days, then drove 188 miles home. I used the whole of my time doing what I wanted and not sitting waiting for my car to charge I ordered a petrol car which it was about £15000 cheaper than an EV of the same quality, which buys a lot of petrol. EVs are ideal for some but not others. When my wife needs to replace her car it will probably be an EV

Got Leaf 40 now, ordered Bz4x. Im city commuter 70% of time, family of 4. Charging at home with 0.26/kWh make 2-3x times less expensive than any ICE car or hybrid. I agree, range a anxiety is a bit of problem, charging network is rubbish in UK. And to make things worst, UK govermenent put 20% tax on charging network. So basicaly with thirsty Bz4x, Stellantis cars or audi e-tron with public charging prices from 0.79 to 0.85/kWh, winter long range trip makes almost more expensive than hybrid cars, or at least same price like diesel or hybrid. But... I love EV comfort! Instant heat, instant power, quiet. Most of EV`s is comfy family SUV with power of racing car. Still EV winner for me.

A 140 mile trip isn't a long journey, and it's well within the range of almost every EV on the market today, the 64kWh Soul (range circa 200-240) is more than capable of doing that journey without having to re-charge on route. Tesla supercharger stations which are open to all available in Luton & in Northampton you could have used at about half the cost of Gridserve (even less if you have membership).

I had enough to go up and let the car sip juice at 44p/Kwh at a 7Kw Podpoint in supermarket car park whilst having lunch at a nearby pub just to top it up a bit and get an extra wide parking space. On way back, I popped to the Tesla Superchargers at Luton for 20mins of 70Kw charging at 42p/Kwh. I run a 64Kwh LEAF, its just turned 22K miles and 52 weeks old. It was five months before I used a charge point away from , until then all of my mileage was at the low overnight rate for electricity. During the year I have managed a 'road trip' of just over 2000 miles, and a couple of trips of over 350 miles. The away from home costs are high but are more than offset by the cost savings for my normal motoring. I wonder what are the true MPGs of diesels using the motorway, my Discovery never got better than 32 mpg average, and even my Panda Diesel only managed 55 'on a run'.

I hear this 7.5p per kilo watt hour electric charge alot BUT, we have a 2024 hyundai kona N line s EV and only do about 200 miles a week, so to get the 7.5p energy price for 6 hours a night would mean the other 18 hours a day electric goes up by 3p per kilowatt hour to 29p , so we would actually be worse off. So we charge at home for 25.7p per killo watt hour as a flat rate.

I live in SW France. I own a Model 3. It’s 750 miles/1000kms from here to Calais. I have to make five charging stops which forces an overnight stay at a hotel because each stop takes upto 50 mins at v2 Superchargers. I can make the journey without stopping in our Peugeot Rifter diesel. None of the UK reg cars we see here in Summer are EVs! The reason being because it’s inordinately more difficult to drive an EV that far.

@@ItsDanLatham Driving within one full charge (Model 3 long range circa 300 miles) is easy, because I charge at home but the slow chargers in local villages and towns are more like what i’d use in an emergency. Some supermarkets have installed chargers because they have had to install solar panels in their car parks, due to govt rules but even then they’re 3kW, turned off outside of opening times and require some sort of proof of shopping before they allow connection eg.Lidl,Super U, L’Eclerc. The never-ending (15 years so far) nonsense of proper charging infrastructure is still ridiculous and 50kW chargers should be the bare minimum. There is just one 50kW charger within 50-80kms of me, with one ccs outlet. I’m currently looking at moving to a PHEV because i’m so bored with the nonsense.

@@ItsDanLatham We used to live in Brighton. Apart from paying to park at an NCP while also paying to charge plus paying for the time it took to charge, the big idea was lamp post chargers, which overnight gave about 1kW/h. Many people without home chargers had to use these or drive to an out of town 50kW fast charger. That was years ago, when Nissan Leafs and i3s were appearing on the used market. Then it got worse. The Council fined people who did not have parking permits for the zone they were using the lamp post charger in! Then there’s the vast number of different local networks each with it’s own RFID and account needed in order to use their charger. It’s still a farce and EV fanatics swear blind that none of this happens.

Wow! you must have a super strong bladder to travel 750 miles none stop, and how on earth do you stay awake , However with my Tesla 3 I’d start from home with a full charge and get approx. 250 miles then 2 other stops at 30-40 mins each time, just enough for food, drink, loo & stretch legs or a snooze. The cost of that trip for me would be around £60 if I used Tesla chargers at 0.45 pkw plus £5.00 for home charging, by comparison in a diesel car at 50mpg that would cost nearly double. I would arrive relaxed because of the (limited) self driving ability of a Tesla. I have an Infinity EX30 v6 3L diesel suv also and would choose the Tesla for that drive.. But that’s my experience….

Its not so easy - if you run out of fuel, the car will probably still go for a fuel miles, and you can fill a can or have someone bring some to you. It also takes just minutes to fill. On a long journey in an EV, if you break down on a motorway, its a lot more hassle. Plus, stopping can take an hour or so to get a fast charge. Charging overnight is ideal but not always an option. With a 64kWh ev you could have left home with 80% charge and charged overnight at or near your destination at a much cheaper rate than charging at motorway services. We've heard all the BS about ev's being too expensive to run many times but 99% of drivers don't have the inconvenience that you claim and don't have the costs that you say either. I have an ev with a lower maximum range than the 64kW Soul and somehow I managed to do a 1,300 mile road trip to Orkney and back in June. I was never delayed or inconvenienced and the prices for charging still worked out at significantly less than running an equivalent ICE or hybrid. This is my first EV and I have owned it for about 18 months now. I just do not understand all the negativity and hate, fear and doubt. If you insist on an ICE that's fine by me. In my own vehicle, Mazda 6 diesel, MPG is about 70. Fuel here is £155.9 L. I think the biggest problem is the time taken to charge the vehicle and of course the infrastructure not quite being ready yet to do away with queues. Wait time could be justified if you only have one stop along your journey but what about something like Glasgow to London for example? Several stops add several hours of journey time to your trip. Right now I think in that scenario ICE cars make sense and EVs are way behind second best. I cannot see that changing any time soon as the battery tech is not there yet. Hybrids are a decent solution for local journeys on battery and then other fuel to go further afield. I think the must have an EV date will inevitably keep getting pushed back until one of the technologies produces a workable solution to range, time and environmental impact.
@ItsDanLatham

I do agree that a big breakthrough in battery tech is necessary before it becomes a viable option for everyone. That and the infrastructure. According to the stats, where I live in the south east is the lowest ratio of chargers to vehicles, so I see the issue first hand here. @@Hitstirrer "Fast quiet and smooth" ? Mine is all that and catalyctic converters stop all the bad emmisions, so them are just sales lies . Speed now days is not useable everywhere i drive is 20mph or 60mph speed cameras every road so can never use any speed so that means zilch. The oil barons own the very same power grid you EV suckers use so that means zilch. like i stated The EV car is only a control the sheep and a Was never needed product, cars at year 2000 onwards are doing the job fine and wil last 250k miles. i will drive petrol until they drag us screaming to the 15 minute camps.

The reason you felt range anxiety is because EVs are shit and a con for future control and restrictions on movement.

You seem to have a short memory, don’t you remember the 70s oil crisis when the Arabs turn the oil off? What about if Iran blocks, the Strait of Hormuz? Are you gonna get oil from Wales or somewhere?

@@ouethojlkjn you must be thick pal, as we have our own oil fields in the UK which are about to go into over drive. Oil is not a problem if you know about the planet, there's plenty and I was born after 1970 so no remembering needed

@@Englishelectrictype4 I was in the UK Oil industry for several years in the late eighties and early nineties. The first thing you need to know about oil, is it is far from all the same oil. Then you might not sound so thick when you make these idiotic statements of yours. And what exactly do you think turns all this black sludge into Petrol and diesel? Fairies and Unicorns? And what transports it from the Gulf to whichever supermarket you get your fuel from? magic? I won't be as rude as you have been to assert you are thick, but you certainly seem to have a very narrow view of the world.

Yeah, like people drive 900 miles every day here in the UK. Oh, they don't. Check out Richard Symonds who did JoG to LE last year with no issues in a Tesla. Unless you are routinely doing more than 200 miles non stop a day an EV is every bit as practical as a diesel or petrol if not more so I charged up at home last night after running back and forth all day fetching and carrying an elderly relative to and from hospital. My charge cost me just 3 pence per mile. Tell me where you can get petrol or diesel at that price? Guess what: unless you nick it, you cannot. Oh, and we did over 100 miles in the day and it just wasn't a problem at any time even though we began the day with about 70% in the battery and ended the day with 35%. It is easy to set up a scenario for failure but then the reality of EV ownership for 99% of folks is just scary to all you neanderthals and your fossil juice burners. Pity this bloke couldn't do his maths either. 69 pence/kW is less than 20 pence per mile and less than £20 per 100 miles, nowhere near his £40 declaration. His rank stupidity is laughable. Just another person painting EV's in a bad light for his clickbait stupidity.
