Hi Yousif, love the channel been watching your videos for about a week now. I'm a Class A driver myself and have been for 10yrs now. I've ran everything from regular dry van, doubles, tankers etc. I seen in this video you are in my home state and are climbing over what we call the grapevine. You have the right idea about going up not maxing out your truck and keeping those 4 ways on while doing so. Remember to also watch all your temps so you can pull over before something breaks if need be. Now when descending the mountain you should be in an equal or lower gear then you climbed it, while using your engine break. This should give you enough resistance to not have to use your service breaks as this should be left for when you really need them, such as an emergency stop. If there isn't enough force from the engine break to keep the truck from gaining speed then stab break. Do not ride your breaks all the way to the bottom of the hill, as they will overheat and could possibly fail, catch fire, or become permanently warped. Keep it up your doing a great job and welcome to trucking. Once it's in your blood its hard to let go brother.
@kevinjgillespie4 жыл бұрын
Yousif, USE the engine brake instead of your BRAKES. Yes, it can be loud but that means it's doing its job. It will not hurt the engine but using your brakes will hurt your wallet. Drive at a speed that allows you NOT to use your brakes, if you have to use your brakes slow down more. And, if you don't like the noise, slow down more as well. The heavier you are the slower you will need to go. Using the engine brakes saves you money.
@ontheroad70974 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’ll be using my engine breaks from here on!
@raymondharrington5604 жыл бұрын
If you need to slow down while using your engine brake, press on your brakes firmly just long enough to slow down 5 MPH, and no more. Do that as needed down the hill, but don't ride your brakes too much. Let the engine brake do its job.
@Diwash14 жыл бұрын
It's probably cheaper just to replace brake pads than cause unnecessary wear on the engine. I would go with brake pads.
@joshuadughi4 жыл бұрын
@@Diwash1 Diwash1; You are wrong in this regards. The "wear" that you allude to isn't any wear that is more - or less - than what you get - by just riding down a flat desert road - and never touching your brakes. Remember: As long as the engine is on and running, then... pistons are going up and down, valves are opening and closing - and as long as your engine's lubrication system is working properly, then your engines components - which are running EVEN WHEN THE TRUCK IS ONLY IDLING! - are being lubricated, and are NOT wearing out. The ONLY acceleration that may/does take place as your engine's RPM's speed rise.. .IS the rise in RPM's (more "cycles" of use - and thus more Wear-and-Tear)- and.. you are simply speeding up the number of times that a part spins around at higher speeds (RPM's) or a part opens and closes.. vs. how many times that part/component spins around/ opens-closes / whatever - when the engine is on idling. Looked at differently, if your argument is that "because you are running the engine (faster) at higher RPM's - then you are wearing your engine out - faster!" Yes - that IS the case - but THAT is why we replace the lubricants - and even other fluids like coolants and brake fluids - to ensure that those fluids running through the respective components - are NOT dirty and unnecessarily speeding up the wear-and-tear on your engine and its components - because of dirty fluids! Brake pads, by the way are designed.. .to wear down! It's ok that they do. What you DON"T want is brake pads being subjected to an environment where they can NOT perform their job, or WORSE, they FAIL while doing their job! It is that last point that is most important. When brakes - and pads - heat up under heavy loads WHILE going down a grade, the heat is already causing the brake fluids to not allow as much pressure to be applied to the brakes' pistons (the brake fluid's viscosity changes). The pads - engineered to operate optimally at temperature "Y".. are now being asked to operate at less-than -optimal temperature "Z" - and pads "grippy" qualities at "Y" degrees - are NOT the SAME when you are running them at "Z" degrees... and - the pads' components can/could/may catch fire... No!! ALWAYS rely FIRST on the engine "brakes" - operating at a proper range of RPM's doing their job - before leaning on / relying on the regular brakes doing their job in those conditions (down a hill - with a heavy load). Since I touch on that.... "...engine "brakes" - operating at a proper range of RPM's ... " - Yuseff asked the question... "At what speed(s) should I be going, down-hill? The answer is: "People talk of going down the grade at a particular speed. I have realized that to be MOST PRECISE, you have to really talk about... "going down the grade at a particular range of RPM's!" So, if you climbed the mountain in Gear 4 - at 1800 RPM's, then you should go down the mountain.. at NO faster than what 4th gear at 1800 RPM's allows you to go! If your load is so heavy that you dropped down to 2nd gear - and were running the engine up to 2200 RPM's, then (assuming that the down-grade on the other side of the mountain is the same as the upgrade of the first side of the mountain) - then you should ONLY GO DOWN THE BACK SIDE OF THAT mountain at NO SPEED HIGHER than where you are in 2nd Gear - and at 2200's RPM's.! So, two assumptions: 1) that you didn't drop off your load at the top of the mountain, and 2) that the incline of the mountain is the same on both the way UP the hill as it is on the way DOWN the hill. Finally, too, and VERY IMPORTANT, don't "push it.." ... if you are going down that steep hill - that took being in 2nd gear at 2200 RPM's to get up.. .don't think, "Ahh... I'll give my engine a break - I'm going down hill - Easy-Peasy!... I'll reduce wear on the engine, and shift up to Third gear, and run it at 1500-1800 RPM's!" DO NOT DO THIS!! THIS IS WHEN THE INERTIA - THE MASS - THE WEIGHT OF YOUR TRUCK AND LOAD - AND GRAVITY.. will take over - and possibly lead to an early end to your day... and minimally, cause you MUCH stress as you anxiously try to grab back at 2nd gear while your whole rig is accelerating and you are trying to catch 2nd gear - at 2500 RPM's - causing you to start praying to God and Allah as quickly as you can! (I don't think we should be only praying when thinks go "south" (or downhill!!) anyway!) Just sayin... (been there - done that!) Josh

The noise you hear when engine brake is on is just air getting compressed and released
@crockett54 жыл бұрын
The chain set up he showed you is the correct way to secure something like this. If you use a single chain and single binder then it's considered only 1 chain securing that section of the load. When you use the 2 ends of the chain separately with binders at one even on each side and have slack in the middle it's now considered 2 chains so double the weight restraint while using only 1 chain. Had you just done a single chain & single binder and that thing weigh 10k lbs you wouldn't have enough securement. The 2 binders set up with slack in the middle = 2 separate securement point each at full weight rating of the chain/binder. Sometimes you put the binder hooked to the trailer and something to whatever your hauling. Also just for the record if you hook into the stake pockets on the trailer always have them pulling outward on the pocket so if it bends a bit you can still get a wood stake into the pocket. Also yes on the boom, anytime you haul one of these or an excavator always strap or chain the boom down or the DOT will get you. Also if you ever haul the job site air compressors throw a strap across the top of the engine compartment because I actually had the blots come loose on one and the cover bent up going down the road. I always carry some duck tape as well to tape doors shut on various types of equipment because sometimes they can pop open doing down the road.

Great to see young people in the business, I am now 70 and retired 5 years with over 35 years in lowboy and flat bed, let me give you some tips, first the old school way what ever gear you pull a hill same one going down, if you touch your brakes more than 3 times or longer than 3 seconds in one mile you are going to fast, the reason your engine sounds loud is because the system turns your engine into a air compressor, that is why a louder noise the higher the RPM, Great job on tie down, this is something I don't agree with but DOT law if you were to use one chain and binder they will give you full rating by using two they only give you half makes no sense, ever have questions please reply love helping young drivers, I am also from Alb area

I read in the CDL book or somewhere, to brake hard on downhill and bring the speed 5 miles below the safe speed limit and let go off the brakes. Do the same again as the speed increases. Off course use engine brake and be in the same or lower gear than what you used to climb the grade. Also newer trucks have more power and they can be in a higher gear when going uphill so watch out, you may need to go even lower gear than what you used to climb up.

Yousif!!! You're hurting your engine MORE by having high RPMs, rather than have the Engine Brake on. It is going to be loud, but it will save your brakes and engine. I've been an OTR driver for 21 years. And as a rule, I was taught that whatever gear you go UP the hill in, you need to drop one or two going DOWN the hill. An experienced driver (20 years ago, or so), told me you can go down a hill too slow 1000 times. You'll only go down too fast ONCE. Keep on truckin'. And we'll see you out on the road. P.s. I'm making a switch to hotshot (CDL) in a month.

Enjoy spending time with your Dad. I was wondering who was in the background of some of your videos. Splurge sometimes and take Dad out for a nice meal-----grin... Your simple diet is awesome.

Your engine brake/jake brake is meant ti.be loud. Its utilizing the exhaust to brake. Always use your engine brake. You surely dont want to burn out your brake pads and end up with a runaway truck. You should barely be using actual brakes when going downhill. They should be used to assist the engine brake.

Down shift and engine brake on steep downhill travel and engine brake with normal grade with a loaded trailer.

Then engine brake isn't there to just save brakepads, but it's there for safety, in long downhill the brakepads can go non-functional due overheating, and that's when lot of bad things start happening.

How do you two sleep in the cab?
@1stNoCleverName4 жыл бұрын
I have been wondering the same thing -- well, actually, I was wondering if maybe Yousif drops Dad off at a hotel near where he parks/sleeps in cab for the night, then picks him up bright (or dark) and early, or maybe does one person sleep in the front seat, or maybe even in the truck bed outside? ADDITIONALLY, I have seen in many of your videos, Yousif, this older gentleman occasionally "video bombing" and making cameo appearances off to the side or in the background -- I have been wondering this whole time: "Who is this guy? Yousif's dad? The company owner and Yousif drives for him? Just a friend? I bet it's his dad." Now we know, mystery solved!

Hotel would be perfect. That way, you both can use the room for freshen up before leaving. No wonder Yousuf always have clean face and look rested. Masha’Allah.

Why don’t you have ramps?

In my semi I never downshift while going down a hill. It’s okay to use engine brake but you must be going to fast or too high of gear

Nothing better than to invest on 14 ply tire cost about $190.00,if the cost is less than $150.00 no bueno,also the wheels can be upgraded to the ones that hold greater air preasure,before you start having wheel bearing problem grease them or change the oil in them replace (gear oil ).Thanks for your video,hope you invest wisely and enjoy life,be blessed my friend.

Turn off AC when going up the hill to keep your engine cool from over heating

Don't go over with the chain. I believe it's even incorrect and could get you a fine. That rail is supposed to protect hour load straps and chain in a event of an accident and in the end load should still be intact.

Have you had the time to calculate your average GPM with pulling loads? Just curious how a 3500 dually compares in GPM to a conventional Semi-Tractor (6GPM).

That tire will not break through your trailer if your not on the outer beam. It will be just fine unless your talking 10,000 lbs per tire that's a huge difference. If you can't get a tire or a outer beam it will be just fine
