Since there is so much controversy about grading and Daniel is a very trusted and informative source of information to us coin collectors, wouldn't it be a great service to all of us if NGC or PCGS would invite Daniel to sit in with them for a couple of days to see what and how they grade coins. Daniel could then do a video to help all of us understand the process. An educated public is a happy public. I think we need PCGS, and NGC to be the experts in grading. They are kind of like the supreme court of grading.

I would like to have a NGC/PCGS rep grade your two PL coins at a trade show without knowing how they graded them. I would bet they would differ from their own experts if put on the spot. Both of those coins should be graded the same. I would also like if these companies would provide more details on how they determined a specific grade on a coin, I would pay extra for this service on high value coins.

Nice grades. I wish I knew how NGC determines grades DPL and PL but I don't. I own a few of both so this interest me to. On my own hunting roles of coins. I was role hunting Morgans the other day and found a top 100 - 1888-O VAM4 hot lips. So that was pretty amazing to find as all Morgans and Peace dollar's are VAMs. The only thing about a Morgan or Peace dollar to determine is is it a known VAM or a new die stage VAM. But I believe it to be AU58. I hope anyway. We will see. Congratulations on your first bulk submission.

Generally the grading services have been positive for the hobby, but there are so many examples of grading oddities and irregularities that we are often left scratching our heads about what the grader saw in the coin to make its MS-x either higher than we ever thought it could be, or lower. When the grading services have the power of creating increased value out of nothing -- or of destroying it -- by notching the MS up or down by a few points over what an experienced collector would conclude, it is almost incredible that there is no recourse for an explanation. Granted that we often are examining nice but common coins where 3 or 4 points might imply less than a $100 difference, but just 1 point in granting an MS-61 to a coin that many would estimate as MS-60 at best for (say) an 1884-S Morgan has an impact of $1,000+. Also, a $100 difference might imply a 100% relative difference in value. So why is some 1884-S in MS-61 and so many others MS-60: No explanation. No one will ever know. The abracadabra boys at the grading service just granted the owner of the coin the right to charge someone $1,000+ more for the coin in less than one minute. The problem becomes extreme when we examine higher grades, MS-65 through -68 for many coins. As a case study for myself, I selected a nice raw coin which I had acquired at a local show -- a 1937 Walker -- and spent a fairly long time grading it by written and photo-grade standards. It is a fully brilliant coin which has only the faintest bag-mark on the obverse and a perfect reverse. Its strike is average+ so that it is not particularly strong or weak at that points where Walkers are known to be rather mushy, but altogether it is above average. I concluded that it is an MS-65, perhaps MS-66 but not certainly. I then took enlarged images from the PCGS web page for the 1937 Walker and compared my Walker only with the PCGS images in which the coins were brilliant, not toned. My conclusion was that my coin was as good as some of the MS-66's which they show, but also similar to some MS-65's and 64's, detail by detail. I have to confess that with barely detectable differences in coins, which aren't consistently observed even by the PCGS professionals themselves, it makes the most sense often to search for the nicest coins you can find in MS-62, 63, 64, 65 and avoid the MS-66, 67, 68's and the large premiums they entail unless you are convinced that the coin's quality and eye-appeal are that striking. Otherwise, you will be paying a lot of money for phantom qualities you yourself cannot even detect -- and many people at the grading could not either.

Trust your opinion on price. But I refuse to bow down to the big two for their "grading". Just my rant. Thanks Daniel.
@jameskerry38263 жыл бұрын
I so understand the frustration w/the "big two"...the worst part for me personally about it: (my experience): THEY DO NOT HOLD THEIR GRADERS TO THEIR OWN DEFINITIONS OF (GRADE/SURFACE DESIGNATION ETC). This, makes the entire thing a crap-shoot. the majority that I've submitted (that held the greatest disappointment), were those better dates, that had a STRONG MIRROR finish on them: one in particular that I could read a small book cover at more than two and a half feet away, (among the most beautiful of Morgans that I've ever seen) and they did not give PL, and gave a low MS grade...as I pushed for an explanation (which is another problem area about them, in my opinion), I finally got an answer that it was "too" reflective/mirrorlike to get the PL. Bottom Line: it's their inconsistency (and arrogance) that bothers me the most. I really wish something would change the near-monopoly-like stranglehold that I blv they have; something that would/could give ppl assurance that it's an original coin, w/o all of their nonsense.
