This is when they got their own studio in Los Angeles. A decade earlier, their studio was the set for the tv sitcom, BARNEY MILLER. They kept the same rooms, and jail cells and just put their equipment into the offices.

I am so proud of you! I want to start a channel, but I just usually moderate. One man pays me(shhhh!) Because I've been with him for 6 years, I was the first mod, and was until he got to 200K, then he had me interview people to moderate! Idk if you have ever heard of Overlord DVD (Doomcock), he does pop-culture and sci-fi content. I also mod for a woman about dating issues and some of the OF girls on! Eek! 304's! Lol! 😂 When you listen tmeo TOOL, A Perfect Circle, or Puscifer, I just melt... The way you enjoy them like I do, but since I was in 10th grade!!! You will love all the bands you listened!! I feel blessed to have an honest, sweetie, guy! ❤🙏🏻🌹

This album was way ahead of its time. They used a lot of samples and citied them all in the liner notes of their albums. What makes them special is they would play their own instruments on some tracks and they sampled themselves

Dude…. If you want to see actually how talented the Beastie Boys were, you should react to them live from Glasgow. It’s a long video. But it’s so so good! They do a little from every decade they are around. From punk to hip hop to funk, they do it all. They will forever be my favorite group. I saw them in every decade they existed and never one let me down. Never once rapped over their own tracks. Always live. Always the best. Nobody compares. They are a true original. ✌🏻

Beasties’ greatest strength was variety: 1st 5 albums ALL MASTERPIECES & ALL DIFFERENT. It’s a disservice to any of them (especially Paul’s Boutique!) to listen to just one track. I can’t even imagine hearing this one without context of Egg Man, Sounds Of Science, etc Strongly suggest listen to Paul’s start to finish, true work of art, landmark of sampling & psychedelia & lyrical lunacy, there is nothing like it! And knowing your love of rock, Check Your Head will rock you, they play their own instruments on that one Love your channel ✌️

I _love_ the visual metaphors in this video; right at the start, we see a surfer guy. He's catching a cool wave, nothing too crazy. Then the camera goes underwater for a second, and then it cuts to the Beastie Boys themselves doing their rhymes; and the footage of the Boys has a pronounced *RED* filter. A _blood-red_ filter, when in the last scene we were going underwater. Almost like there's blood in the water. And then there's the skateboarding guys. At first, the footage is just them doing their tricks, nothing overly menacing. Then it cuts to a cat running away from a camera. Which is a pretty funny scene, but they actually kept a circular lens-thing (I don't know the actual terminology, I'm sorry) over the footage, evoking the barrel of a gun. And when the cat looks at the camera, it's almost like it's _looking down the barrel._ After the initial cat scene, whenever we see the skateboarders, there's occasionally that same circular lens. The footage itself is pretty chill, but the mock gun barrel adds an underlying sense of menace to it all. I mean, we've all seen movies and TV and the like, where there's some guy just going about his business, doing his thing; then we see a sniper or other such assassin staring him down. He's in mortal danger, but remains blissfully unaware. Just like the skateboarders who are chilling and doing some tricks. Not to mention the footage of the low-income areas, complete with graffiti and an angry, barking guard dog. Lastly, the first time they drop the "Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun" title, we see the surfer guy again. Only this time, the wave is cresting, and at certain angles, it looks like a long tube - or, a long _barrel._ And just like the first time, shortly after the camera goes underwater, we see the blood-red filter.

My favorite Beastie Boys track. That 2 seconds of "Mississippi Queen" tho... I found the commentary about the current state of hip-hop always using samples as opposed to that era being fresh and original a bit ironic; Paul's Boutique is frequently credited with ushering in the sample-heavy style that still persists today, though they were themselves building from the times where your success as a musician DJ depended largely on how good a record collection your parents/grandparents had.

They music-the beat the key-so evocative of the actual feeling of looking down the barrel of a real gun-it’s off a bit and freaky (and yeah, I’ve been there). I know the song isn’t exactly about that, but it’s obvious they got that feeling. Love the Beasties!!

This is one of those tunes from my late teen years. Just testing out my independence and venturing out on weekend roadtrips. Every time I hear it I can smell that old Chevy running down the highway blasting music through a pair of Jensen 6X9s. Tribe Called Quest, left my wallet in El Segundo is a great on for that too. They tell a story that you want to listen to and accent it with a great rhythmic cadence.

Hey I've seen a couple of your Beastie Boys reactions and they seemed honest, reflective and carefully considered. You mentioned in this one about perhaps the best times of music are behind us. So, I have a couple suggestions for you. Especially because you mentioned not having any patience for the Beasties growing up cuz you were into Gangsta rap. These suggestions are well loved & respected by the OGs. Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube, Eazy E, Ice-T, Kendrick KRSone, DMC, ChuckieD & Flav, JayZ etc have all paid homage to the Atomic Dog, the Legendary George Clinton, the genius producer with multiple record contracts with multiple studio/companies simultaneously, for the same group of musicians. Ha! See Parliament were the singers who had a backup band and Funkadelic was a rock band (a REAL, OG, influential rock band in the 70's, no wannabes!) who had backup singers. They just happened to be the same people across both groups hence Parliament-Funkadelic or P-Funk. They were super talented musicians with a lineage back to jazz days & had members from James Brown's band, the JBs: Bootsy & Catfish Collins, including the entire horn section: Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker & the Horny Horns. They had Bernie Worrell who was a classically trained prodigy on keyboards who later was in the Talking Heads (weird!) & is in the concert movie Stop Making Sense. Sly Stone was part of the collective, the singer from The Spinners (Rubberband man! nuff said), Junie from the Ohio Players, and Roger Trautman: Zapp & Roger. His story is fkn wild in & of itself. Legendary drummers, bass players & guitarists across the years, not to mention excellent singers way back to the Doo-wop days when Clinton started the Parliaments. I'm thinking it was 1959. Nineteen fucking Fifty-Nine! The year of the Holy Grail Gibson Les Paul Burst guitars that sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars & have examples in museums now, to put it in perspective. This is history you should know! This post is too damn long so I'm gonna leave a couple song suggestions in the next one immediately to follow.

Any hip hop heads know if the rif was sampled or them on their own instruments for this one? I don't recall from the liner notes on the cd. Anyways, Polo, this was one of my favorite tracks off Paul's Boutique. Its like a rap/metal hybrid song but I think they dj'd it vs. with live instruments. I love the bars in it too. Off this particular album, if you want some additional tracks to check out, I'd recommend: High Plains Drifter, 3-Minute Rule, Car Theif, Shadrach. If you want a more pop sounding party song kind of vibe then you have Hey Ladies and Shake Your Rump.
