Absolutely legendary album. Fun fact about the first song Maggot Brian is that according to legend, the opening title track was recorded in one take when Clinton (producer), high on LSD told Eddie Hazel (guitarist) to play as if he had just learned his mother died.

Funkadelic should really be looked at as a part of the huge Parliament-Funkadelic collective led by George Clinton. They were at first the Parliaments, then lost that name over legal reasons, then became Funkadelic, then did both Parliament and Funkadelic and then had countless spinoff acts. They all fall under George's huge collective. He basically wanted to build an empire like Motown records. So the lineups on each album change depending on who was around at the time. Funkadelic was more the rock side, Parliament more the funk side, although that's not hard and fast of a rule. Other great acts of the P-Funk collective were Bootsy's Rubber Band and Brides of Funkenstein. I actually don't think this is one of their best albums, it wouldn't be in my top ten personally. But its great.
