So, Sebastian Bach has been on my list for four years now, and for some reason it just kept getting pushed back. Maybe because the name Skid Row concerned me that this would be extremely harsh vocals, having lived next to a Skid Row in Los Angeles for many years (and many experiences with the homelessness). Welp, wrong again, Elizabeth!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Skid Row and Sebastian Bach for the first time, performing "I Remember You”.

‘Monkey Business’ is the Skid Row you thought you were getting. Most of the band did not even want to record this song, but Bach wanted too (He was in charge of exactly nothing at the time), and Doc McGee (who was their manager - and KISS’s manager, and Bon Jovi’s manager, listened to the rough version, sided with Bach and forced them to do it. Everyone’s telling you to do ‘Wasted Time’ but you need to do the harder stuff that the band actually wanted to do - like ‘Slave to the Grind’ or the aforementioned ‘Monkey Business’ or even ‘18 and Life’ also a power ballad.

I've yet to see a vocal analyst on YT give enough credit to Sebastian's dirty/distorted screams. That's where his emotional delivery really shines and he's just on another level with it. It's really difficult to figure out how do that without wrecking your voice for the rest of the song. And it's even more difficult to scream on-pitch while walking up and down scales. Now start clean, transition to a dirty scream, then back to clean again like he does in this song. It's simply amazing, and yet too often (IMO) tragically overlooked and underrated.

I'm surprised you didn't gush over that last line more. I can only think of a handful of singers in the rock arena that could deliver a final line like that. The length of the phrase, the amount of air to achieve the powerful climax, and then the tale off at the end. It's one of THE greatest rock/pop climaxes I've ever heard. He's an absolute monster in the genre. And for me, the nasality doesn't turn me off. It helps with the projection and the clarity of diction. Sebastian is at the top tier for this stuff.

One of the most underrated to come from the hair metal scene. Many knew his talent, sadly the short longevity and lack of consistency of hits after their first release banished them to tour openers rather than Top Guys. I recall at the Moscow Music Peace Festival Crew, Row, Zack Wylde, and Jason Bonham covered "Rock & Roll" with Bach and Vince going back and forth and Bach just simply destroyed him on stage. Not too surprising now the way we know Vince turned out. But back then you immediately knew this dude (Bach) had chops for days with Crew being one of the biggest acts at that show and Row being relative new comers.

The best way I can describe Sebastian Bach. He is a well trained war horse. There is a massive amount of power in him. He can make it prance, canter, walk, gallop and full out power run. He knows how to and when to hold back. Yet even when gentle you can feel the power there. Like petting a giant work horse. You can feel the power underneath the surface, you know that horse could hurt you but they can hold it in and be so sweet and gentle. That is Sebastian, his voice can be so sweet and gentle. But he can turn that power on whenever he pleases. It is always impressive.

I don't believe i've heard him sing this nearly close to this in many, many years. But, remembering when it came out and even now, just how the whole song comes across...I think it's one of the greatest rock ballads. Especially of that era of music. Passionate. I love your disections in these videos. It allows me to really understand & picture things more, whether it's the physical body & the way it works or just giving me new imagery with the way the song itself comes across. The term Skid Row while being well known as a depressed part of Los Angeles (which some might argue is what the Whole City is now becoming…) is actually derived from an old Logging phrase. It came from ‘skid road’ where timber logs were dragged lengthy distances from the forests & even sometimes greased to make the process easier, down to the river for floating transport to lumber mills down river… As one could imagine the impact of such a process left a lasting impact on the land & many roads. When it went through a community often a small town, hamlet, or village as this era of logging was long in our past & & generally in rural communities, the area was often later seen as the less desirable place to live… Thus the name ‘skid road’ & later becoming ‘skid row.’

Whew, this song. I saw them play in Toronto when I was homeless, and this will always have a very special place for me. Being a kid, and being homeless, I was invisible. I fell through all the cracks. People walk by like you don’t exist, and in this song, I saw a piece of me crying, reaching out begging to be remembered, to not be forgotten. And the song being the only voice saying ‘I will remember you.’ Silly, maybe. It gave me hope when I had none. I still cry, hearing it. I loved hearing your quips about the hair - my gods, the hair back then - and gave me a different appreciation for his voice. Thank you for this.

I had never heard of you before, but I was extremely intrigued by the fact that you had never heard Sebastian Bach sing before, and I was excited to see your reaction to his voice singing I Remember You. I was a teenager in the late 80s when hair bands and power ballads were very popular. I loved 18 and Life, which was released before I Remember You, but hearing Sebastian Bach singing this song was something very different. It's one of those songs where you don't just hear it; you feel it. Sebastian Bach's voice is so smooth and honest when he sings. During that time of hair bands and power ballads, his voice was very different than the other rockers. I had never stopped to think about it, but all of the thing you say in your video are so true. He's just an incredible singer. So, having just heard the song that he recorded with Skid Row in the late 80s, check this one out that was just released a few weeks ago. His voice has changed some over 25 years, but he still sounds very good. This is (Hold On) To The Dream kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHeaYmewntV0aK8 After hearing your thoughts on that one, I'm curious if you've done this one in one of your videos. Steelheart -- I'll Never Let You Go kzbin.info/www/bejne/fF7RqpifgNBma68 Miljenko Matijevic also has an incredible voice and this is SUCH a good song. I always wondered if Steelheart would have become a much bigger name if he hadn't been hurt during that concert in the early 90s, just a couple of years after they released their first album. He was injured so badly that he wasn't able to return to the band at the time, and he had to be replaced.

Fun fact about this song: the one line at the end of the song that has the extra harmony you noticed on "I remember...", that harmony is sung by Jon Bon Jovi. He heard the song and said "I gotta be on this" so they hid him in there uncredited. In a Darkened Room by Skid Row is my favorite song in the entire world. I have it tattooed on me. It makes me emotional, and Sebastian's voice on that song is unbelievable. Please review that one!! They have been my favorite band since i was a little kid, they mean the world to me. Scotti Hill is hands down my favorite guitar player on earth (who i was lucky enough to meet a few weeks ago and is a truly wonderful person) and he is known for his highly emotive guitar solos, especially on their ballads. As far as what you expected from Skid Row, you're not wrong to think they're edgy, you just picked a soft song 😂 For heavier, edgier Skid Row, i highly recommend Monkey Business, Psycho Love, The Threat or Slave to the Grind

It's so fun watching a classically trained, professional opera singer listen to (often for the first time) songs that have been staples in my musical library for decades. Your analysis of these songs is completely fascinating to this rock drummer who knows absolutely nothing about vocal technique. In truth, I've heard "I Remember You" so many times I'd be happy not to hear it again. But your analysis made it fun to revisit this song and helped me understand it on an entirely new level. BEST SONG EVER! I CANT TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES I'VE WATCHED THIS VIDEO IN MY 60 YEARS! One of the sexiest lead vocalists of our days for sure. THAT HAIR AND THOSE LIPS. HE'S JUST BEAUTIFUL! He was on The Masked Singer and STILL has that amazing voice!

I've listened to songs like this one, thousands of times since the first airplay in the late '80s. When Elizabeth walks through them, it's like hearing it for the first time. FUN! ...and I know nothing of vocalist-isms. This is great stuff.

I would love to see her reaction to quicksand Jesus. Sebastian really shows his vocal abilities on that song

In a Darkened Room would be my choice, cause it’s my absolute favourite for mix of voice and guitar from Skid Row. All the other songs are great as well, but this is my absolute choice, since I Remember You has already been done. Thanks very much for doing this song, I’ve been waiting years, and this is my first comment here :)
