I am a huge GnR fan, and I love the album versions, as well as the live versions (there is something special about live performances. for an older fan like me, the live performances are the best!), but I would never try to lure a non-fan into enjoying/ appreciating/ loving GnR by throwing them into the deep end of the pool (ie, live performances, which can be a bit rough, at times, lol) to begin with :)

These trio of songs make up the full story. "Don't Cry" was the initial breakup...."November Rain" was a dream of what could have been if she didn't commit suicide...and "Estranged" is him dealing with the emotions afterwards. I was at the video recording as part of the crowd. We were there from 7 to 4am reacting to them play this song over and over and I can tell you the orchestra was live and it was a surreal experience being part of this video. It was so loud the paint was peeling from the ceiling snowing down on us while they played. The end result sounds exactly like the studio version.

Fun fact, the guitar Slash is playing in the video belonged to Aerosmith's Joe Perry, who sold it after leaving the band in '79. For a while after finding out Slash had acquired it, Joe kept trying to buy it back, which strained their friendship a bit. Eventually, Slash returned it as a birthday present on Joe's 50th.

I've only just recently discovered your channel. I love your reaction vids and in-depth descriptions of the vocalists' abilities! They give me fresh insight on ways I maybe could improve on my own skills (It's a little secret passion of mine, while I'm outwardly too embarrassed to sing in front of more than a select few - unless you feed me an untold amount of beer in me at a karaoke bar or private gathering of friends). While I'm not positive I'd ever get enough people to agree with me and help me encourage you to listen to it, I really think you'll love this one. Even as a teen in the 90's (that's right, late Gen-X'er here - born in 1980) I grew up listening to Metallica, connecting to the raw emotion and how I related it to my own life at the time. Due to this, I discovered Metallica's "Low Man's Lyric" very early in my life and even before I was old enough to have acquired much life experience, it - simply as a song - was something I quickly fell in love with. It's definitely underacknowledged, and in my opinion - underappreciated. While some of the lyrics are unmistakenly linked to addiction, I was still able to relate to the frustrations of trying to improve on my life while battling my own bad-tempered habits. It wasn't until later in my life that I was actually able to start understanding the actual message within it. I don't know if you've ever heard it before. If not (or even if you have), I'd love to see your reaction to the vocals and message combination. I truly think it's a great song and would be surprised if you were disappointed after hearing it. On a more recent personal note, while I'm far from a musian or singer, I take long drives as a part of my job and while driving alone for a couple hours at a time, I tend to "latch onto" certain songs and practice singing them aloud (anything from Garth Brooks to Uncle Lucius to Leonard Cohen to Darius Rucker to, well, Metallica!), focusing on exploring my own range and limitations, along with ways I can extend beyond my current vocal limitations. While I'm not afraid of adapting a song to fit my comfort range, I'm always aspiring to better match that of the original artist. Because of this time spent practicing, I've sort of bonded with this song (among many others) - even though I've never personally been addicted to any drugs heavier than a cup of black coffee (ok, I like the occassional beer too!). I'm mostly attached to the melody and am enthralled by the control that James Hetfield has, while managing to encapsulate such raw emotion behind his words. The vocals have proven difficult for me to recreate - but after countless rounds, I'm proud of my progress and very close! The only side-effect being that it's a real workout for my vocal chords, and the repetitive singing of it results in a couple days of a lower and slightly rougher speaking tone (I'm not sure it's a bad thing lol). Ok, testerone is kicking back in so I'm going to stop talking about me now! I seriously hope to see a video from you on Metallica's Low Man's Lyric sometime!!! Please, give it a listen! After 30 years, this song still never fails to give me chills. The video too is full of symbolism. It's true you don't see the bride die, but there's tons of symbolism of death. When the guy jumps through the cake, the bride and groom figures fall. The wine spilling like blood. I don't think there's any need to pretend Axl knows anything about good or healthy vocal technique. I've always understood that he had a very destructive vocal technique. I recall G'n'R having to cancel concerts because he ruined his voice again. I'm not at all surprised you think his voice aged a lot in a short time. They were a band that burned bright, and then burned out. Axl did, at least. The rest of the band tried to pick up the pieces without him at some point, but they could never become what they once were. And yes, Slash without his top hat is still Slash. Even if you can see his face! Just treasure that rare moment. But his brilliant guitar sound is unmistakably him.

First, that's absolutely Slash. This is probably his most iconic solo with regards to the music videos. This solo is indeed sweet, mellow, romantic, and that's for good reason. This section, very much suggested by Slash's stance while playing, is to invoke feelings of making love slowly, passionately. This song is sad, nostalgic even, and those are feelings intermixed with the love-making. Those of us who have endured troubled and ended relationships relate to such mixed, complicated feelings - feelings that are often impossible to articulate. Slash did so with a guitar.

I will start by saying that I like early GnR. IMHO - What made them great was the song writing - lyrics, musicians as in the instrumentalists, and the high-octane energy. Axel wrote most of the songs (great lyricist), but that doesn’t make him a great singer, nor does it make him a healthy singer. I do not see why so many people criticize you about your critical review of Guns N’ Roses in the last video. I felt you were spot on… And I hope you continue to give honest assessments and not bend to the will of masses in your analysis and reviews otherwise they are pointless. Having an honest review of Axel’s performances does not diminish who the band was, what the band contributed and brought to the musical scene and they’re role the zeitgeist. Axel was a great lyricist. Sadly, he wasn’t the greatest singer and he sure didn’t take care of his voice… He was one psychologically messed up dude for a long time… That’s why he spent so many years in therapy. Axel wasn’t a perfect human being. He was, IMHO, a great lyricist who was able to tapped into the zeitgeist of the time.

Axl's voice is beautiful and devastating to me. There is no other voice like his, and his writing is awesome. The aging of his voice is sad to an extent but he blasted those vocals and gave it 3000 percent. His voice now is still beautiful and when I hear it I am devastated wrecked overwhelmed with emotion. His broken voice to me is angelic and beautiful. Thank you Axl! You are a rock God and irreplaceable! His November Rain at Lisa Marie Presley"s funeral is touching haunting and fills my heart so much that emotions pour out.

Yep, so many snobs often make fun or even dismiss Slash entirely as a good guitarist. And while he was never the best in terms of shredding. His compositions and the way he masterfully bends and takes advantage of different techniques to change how the guitar sounds, is what sets him apart. Slash's tone is not that complex, almost everyone could recreate the tone of the guitar, yet very few could make it sound like slash. Because the way he plays it is very unique. Sure he might never be the best guitarist ever, but how often he is dismissed just because he is popular really shows where most rock fans are, thinking that shredding is all there is to it. A lot of his solos have A LOT of nuance, and they are extremely hard to recreate. Sure most people can play the notes, but music is more than just playing the notes. How you play them is as important.

She lives for 6 days and she died in the palm of my hand. The doctors said once disconnected from the machines that were keeping her alive she would not have much time longer to live. I held her in my hands and looked at her and was trying my hardest to give her my life energy. I wanted her to have it so bad that I thought I could force the life out of my body and into hers. I felt powerless. I felt like a failure. I couldn't protect my little Angel. Music also help me get through this and most importantly she had a twin sister that survived. They were identical twins. This song and video came out about the same time that my fiance at the time died suddenly. Both this and "Don't Cry" have always felt so personal to me. The music, the wedding & funeral images, all of just spoke straight to me. Interesting how much she disliked the screaming sound Axl was making (she said chills, but not good chills), because that moment in the song was so cathartic for me - it sounded exactly like what I felt at that time. Fun fact about Guns N Roses. When they released their first album Appetite For Destruction with "Sweet Child O Mine", "Welcome To The Jungle", and "Paradise City" it was initially a flop. MTV had blacklisted them because they felt the music was "dangerous" and "violent". It was about a year later and the record label was about to give up on the album and have GnR move on to their second album when Al Coury, the GM of Geffen Records called in a favor at MTV to get them to play "Welcome To The Jungle." MTV played it one time on a Sunday night/early morning at 4am. The next day MTV was inundated with so many requests to play the song that they no longer could ignore it and Guns N Roses became a literal overnight success. Appetite For Destruction has since been listed on multiple Best/Greatest/Top Albums of all time lists.

This is actually part of a trilogy of songs (Estranged and Don't Cry are the other two parts). The lyrics and the videos of the trilogy are based on a short story by Del James called "Without You". Basically the story is about a band called Suicide Solution and their vocalist, Mayne Mann, who is of course supposed to be Axl Rose. Mayne has a girlfriend or wife, Elizabeth. So SS are on tour, and it's the last stop. A tour's last stop most often means one or both of two trends - first, that they end (and start) in their hometown; second, that it's the best show of the tour. Mayne wants to celebrate after the show with Elizabeth, but she's called out of town on business. Mayne's mad, so he picks up a groupie after the show, and they're hooking up in his hotel room. Matter of fact I think there are two girls, they're having a threesome. The drummer comes by, and Mayne offers him a girl; he turns him down. Then it turns out Elizabeth's trip was cancelled at the last moment. She finds out what room he's in, and goes there to surprise him. Mayne hears a knock, thinks his drummer is back, so he answers the door nude with a girl on each arm, nude as well. He's looking right at his wife, and she takes off. He gets dressed and gives chase. She loses him, gets home, and when he finds her, she's shot herself in the head. That is why only half of her face is shown during the funeral.

The sound you heard at the end that raised your hair was axel’s voice. He has a howl that you really only get from suffering and left pain. At the end end of the day he was a very broken person. For another example of his distinct howl, because I can’t recall anything else like it in rock music is a song off the same album called “ The Garden”. Again it’s towards the end of the song. Definitely worth a listen. Also probably explains the premature maturation of his vocal cords, because I don’t know that his technique live is the best for long term sustainability.

This was my era, and the mix of Axls nasal gravelly timbre with Slashes iconic epic guitar sounds summed up the late 80s/early 90s for so many of us. Just found this video, glad that you love GnR and gave it a fair try! This was the song that many of us grew up with. Personally, this song evokes a sense of melancholic longing for someone you love, who is no longer there. That last few minutes of piano and solo were meant to 'haunt' the listener even after the song was finished. Also, many of GnR songs are actually very very hard to sing live, and even Axl in his later years struggled to replicate that power and high range, gravel-ly feel, that is the hallmark of so many of their songs. As has been commented already this is part of a trilogy of songs "Don't Cry" & "Estranged" being the other 2. "Estranged" is probably my favourite GnR song i especially love Slash's guitars on it. After you have familiarised yourself with Slash's playing he becomes instantly recognizable & you'd know him anywhere. The first time i heard Velvet Revolver's "Slither" on the radio before getting the cd i just went "That's Slash". Rick Beato is a great shout for anything music related.

That guitar solo is incredible. Learning to play the notes is relatively easy but playing it with all the emotion and nuisances is difficult. Slash is able to make those notes speak to your soul.

In Slash's auto-biography book, he stated that Axl programmed the string section in the studio version. So yes, those are not real string instruments heard in this studio track. She has a great ear to be able to detect that.

Hey there, it's always nice to watch your comment videos as a music lover. Just want to keep one thing straight between the songs "sweet child of mine" (album Appetite for Destruction, 1987, studio) and the one here of Use Your Illusion I, 1991, Studio. His voice is not wear because of one being released in 1987 and the other in 1991. The live version of "sweet child of mine" you chose was performed during the "Use your illusion tour" here in Europe -1992, this Paris concert- (also didn't miss it); you said multiple times you don't know a lot about guns and roses but a person who will would notice in the opposite sides of the stage the covers of the albums Use Your illusion I and II - I even dare to say they also performed in the same concert "November Rain", at least in my country they did, but I'm sure they also did it in Paris, France. So you say it's a wear on it's voice that happened very fast fron 87 to 91 might very well be truth, but it does not apply here as both songs are played or in the same year or not even one year apart (the clip and studio is of 1992, but most likely they retained the vocals of 1991) - but as very well said by fans and yourself, one shows Axl's voice (and also Slash's guitar which sounds a bit different in studio - maybe more melodic - when performing "Sweet Child of mine"; imo many guitar details are loss in the live version) singing live and other on a studio but in both chosen scenarios during 1991/1992. Thanks again and sorry for being annoying.

Fun Fact: You will never, EVER be cooler than Slash standing outside of a church in the middle of the desert playing a guitar solo… Also, this song is a masterpiece and it absolutely holds up today. Songwriting, composition, performance and "November Rain" is a part of a trilogy of videos, combined with "Don't Cry" and "Estranged". They're one of the most expensive music videos ever made in history.

Axl Rose is like the human manifestation of the word "diphthong". Whenever there's a note longer than just a brief moment, he draws it out, dips and marinates it in the word that's about to follow. So even if you don't like his voice, I'd urge you to react to more Guns N' Roses just to hear how often he does it!

The whole reason I watch your videos is seeing your reactions and prognostications about how the songs were and what they are about. Me remembering 30+years back to when I saw this video the first time as a teenager and it moved me even then. Seeing you fall in love with what I've loved for decades is both inspiring and comforting. Thank you for reminding me why I love music. Also, I hope you read about this song and he and Stephanie's relationship and and the state of the band at the time as well. Check it out. We gen Xers loved it, lived it, cried with it and cheered with it... Our music and the tragedies of the artists who gave us those incredible songs and memories that are still astonishing visceral over 3 decades later. You're amazing. I'm so glad you gave this song a go. Honestly, I didn't love the wedding part either. For me, back when the song was released in the fall of '91, I was going to an awful breakup which had a lot of things out of my control, lies told to me, she was engaged to someone else and I didn't know, poor decisions were made on her part, but left me broken. All that is to say, it's still hurtful to think about (thank you Tina of MTSU), but this song came out and it felt like every lyric resonated with me and my situation in spite of the video. Then there was his voice that I loved how many ways he could color his tone AND of course Slash's solo's were straight up gorgeously performed and gloriously epic. Not just note choices, but they were tastefully played and it all worked together to create this beautifully awful thing that to this day has an effect on me every time I hear it. Watching you break it down and really notice the subtle things that I believe most people don't even come close to comprehending, makes me appreciate you even more. I wish my friends could hear what you hear! Your expressions are right on, when something really blows your mind, you blink like crazy and can hardly contain your joy. I have to watch at least one of your videos every day because you find a way to see the good in everything and find some random nuance to compliment. Thank you for all that you do to bring us all a little bit of your joy! :)

It should be noted one of the reasons his voice evolved so much is that he took singing classes after they blew up. He put a lot of effort into being able to have that unique voice.

I always believed this song expresses the feelings you deal with after losing someone. It's a mix of remembering the good times, melancholy, guilt and internal conflict, anger and acceptance.

I've always loved how Stephanie Seymour throws white flowers, which turn red, kind of symbolizing blood and death. As they lie on the casket, at the end, in the November Rain, they turn white again, gaining their purity back. To me, it's always symbolized healing after tragedy.
