Since this baby was getting some love over on IG (and there's about to be a bunch of videos on the topic here on my channel), I thought I'd share it! What do you think of this closure style?
-
I made this skirt out of a thrifted duvet cover as a mock-up for my Grammy's dress (check out the video if you're interested!), but I didn't film any of the process, oh no! It was heavily inspired by the Coquelicot Skirt from Wildflower Design, so if you're looking for a skirt pattern similar to this, I highly recommend checking out her work! I am in the process of making a [very, very thorough] tutorial about split side skirts, so keep an eye out for that in the near future!

In what way is this good maternity clothing? Imagine having to lace up that whole thing while having a huge belly. Not practical whatsoever. Might be a cool show off piece but Def not for daily wear. Imagine having to redo all that to go to the bathroom etc. I see no way this is easier than just a zipper, simple tie straps, or elastic band
@sullyrane653
@sullyrane653 11 ай бұрын
@@mh56487 the adjustability was more so what I was going at, you can wear that piece for any special occasion through out your growing belly As someone who hated the idea of buying maternity clothes JUST to wear for a few months, I didn’t lol 😂 but something that would’ve grown with me more, I probably would’ve invested in (especially since I never went down to my original pants size either 😂)

My sister makes historical costumes, and just this evening was telling me about the actual 18th century version of this skirt she is planning to make, as part of a historical outfit. We were having a fun time taking about the separate pockets, and how funny it is that they were frequently beautifully embroidered, even though they were worn under the skirt, and basically, no one was going to see them.

@OrlaQuirk I'm sure you know, but most skirts of the time would have had side slits so that you could pull your pocket through, as otherwise the pocket would be inaccessible underneath your petticoats. So while pockets weren't often visible, they were visible often enough that the embroidery could be appreciated! :)
@OrlaQuirk
@OrlaQuirk 11 ай бұрын
@@MusicalBotany I am no expert, but I never heard of anyone pulling the pocket through the slits to access it. I always assumed they slid their hands in. I've never seen an 18th century garment that I could see the pocket slits, or notice the garments or pocket below. I did see a cute photo of an 18th century gown with a skirt open in front, and the corners of the hem were tucked under the skirt and pulled through the pocket slits, sticking out several inches on each hip. The thought occured to me that pulling the pocket out through the slits in one's skirts could be the 18th century equivalent of a modern woman dumping the contents of her purse on a table. 😸

I like skirts that don’t have loads of zippers or buttons because they can be more flexible in sizing and are more forgiving when it comes to weight fluctuations. For example, if you lose a couple pounds you may not have to buy a whole new skirt, you can sometimes just tie them a little tighter and it’s all the same! They’re also great for maternity clothes and plus sizes since elastic and hand-tied skirts adjust better to the body shape than a rigid zipper or fixed buttons! 💕💕

What a beautiful pattern! I love it! The style is very similar to traditional Japanese Hakama. (Floofy pants worn for horseback riding and commonly part of a kendo gi. The Chinese counterparts are called Kù)

Looks great! And yes it does resemble some historical skirt patterns which makes it easy to adjust for size and leave room to access under layers and pockets, which used to be tied on separately under your skirt

This looks like a incredible way to reduce the sizing problems women face.

My mother had one like that in thr 70’s but without the laces. It had ties in front and back.

Beautiful fit! I agree about the hardware - they're a pain. The skirt is practical.

I would love a skirt like this but shorter. Like mid thigh. Would love to pair it with some tights and boots! So cute!
