Oh, shit. This is a deep, deep rabbit hole. Some context for me. I started watching your channel for The Expanse, I'm a 62-year old guy who grew up on prog rock and never listened to or cared about Taylor Swift until I heard Anti-Hero and liked some of the lyrics. Six months later, to my infinite surprise and the consternation of everyone who knows me, I'm a full-blown Swiftie, seriously considering blowing $1,300 or whatever to go from LA to see her in Vancouver. She did indeed write this in response to the media characterizing her as a crazy serial dater. She decided to write a song from that character's perspective. You might really like the Miss Americana documentary and then the Reputation Stadium Tour movie. But I would really encourage you to check out the All Too Well short film.

You can watch her performance of this at the grammy museum (just her and a guitar). There she gives a fun explanation, how she thought, the media created an interesting character there, and that she could use that. 😅 Also if you really want to dive into TS, make sure to also watch her live performances. While her videos are great and hilarious, her live appearances are the thing, that really set her apart from other artists. 😉 And finally, from what you mentioned as your background, her album Reputation would probably be the best place to start. Suggestion: "Intro + Ready For It? Reputation Stadium Tour". 😉

I haven’t seen in the comments anything about Taylor’s career, so here are some basic highlights for you! - she started off at a young age, all of it - singing, writing songs, playing instruments - she started off as a country singer. her first 2 albums are almost pure country, then the next 2 are also labeled as country, but have more of a pop influence. - she fully transitioned to pop with her 5th album, 1989 - blank space is from this album! - taylor’s songs are often autobiographical, but she also likes to play with the narrative (just like blank space) and the what-ifs. for her 2020 albums folklore and evermore, taylor wrote fictional stories, even made up characters for the songs - yes, she writes all of her songs. even when she has co-writers on the song, she’s know to do the majority of the songwriting - in fact, many people didn’t believe that she’s writing her own songs, so to prove herself, taylor wrote her 3rd album “speak now” (2010) all by herself. there are no co-writers on this album AT ALL - her album “reputation” was a comeback album after the haters and the media absolutely tried to ruin her. it was after the infamous phone call drama with kanye, but I’m sure someone will fill you in about that - taylor is currently in the process of re-recording her first 6 albums - its because her former record label sold off her masters without allowing her to buy them. they were sold to scooter brown who notoriously was a part of the taylor hate train, which obviously upset her even more. so, in order to have full control of her music and to bring down the value of her original albums, she’s re-recording them and to make it more fun, she’s adding songs “from the vault” that were written for the particular album or in the given “era” but didn’t make the cut.

Ha ha so I'm not a Taylor Stan but I have friends who are. We work in metal and rock music and that's my thing. However I started watching some Taylor reactions and I can say although I don't know if this will ever be on my car playlist she is talented. I'm super impressed with her as a woman and her business savvy and the things she does to shake up in the industry game. Now I will say reputation seems to me my speed. Love all that and her live performances I'm super impressed with. So ready for it live from the rep tour and don't blame me and I did something bad I dig. I feel like her live performances I like more than the studio recordings. I recently watched I knew you were trouble live from the 1989 tour was great. I haven't deep dived her too much but the all too well short film was great too.

Here are some songs I’d highly recommend. These aren’t necessarily her biggest hits, but they would be really helpful in acquainting yourself with the full breadth of her discography: - Exile from the album Folklore (although I would suggest trying the Long Pond Studio Session first) - Gold Rush from the album Evermore - Tolerate It from Evermore - Ivy from Evermore - You’re On Your Own, Kid from the Midnights album - Bejeweled from Midnights - Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve from Midnights - New Romantics from the 1989 album - Wildest Dreams from 1989 (I recommend the Grammy Museum performance) - Don’t Blame Me from the Reputation album (I’d recommend the Reputation Stadium Tour performance) - Cruel Summer from the Lover album

If you want to truly dive into the Taylor rabbit hole, I recommend staying away from hits and singles. Her best songwriting is in the deeper cuts. I would also urge you to start with a few live performances - I've listed a few below. She is MAGIC live; you won't regret it. Has anyone ever told you that you look like a young Mary Louise Parker? Also, YES CATS! There are a lot of videos of Taylor and her cats that are quite adorable. Anyway, really fun reaction! I look forward to following your journey. I echo this as someone who is newer to the rabbit hole. When you stick to the major radio hits there is a tendency to stick with the preconceived ideas about her and if those didn’t excite you then you can become more bored and less excited. I found watching newer and non-radio hits or newer live versions of those hits then make it interesting to go back and watch the earlier big hits and really see her growth and breadth.

Wow. This will be fun. (BTW, I'm a 65yo Metallica fan. I've noticed a lot of metalheads becoming swifties, so don't expect your love of metal to provide immunity.) One thing to keep in mind is that Taylor's music ranges over several styles and genres. Another thing to keep in mind is that there are zillions of awesome clips of her live performances as well as music videos. I would suggest that, ideally, you should plan on doing a combination of music video and live performance for each song where both exist (and, generally, both do exist when you are doing her biggest radio hits). I'm sure lots of swifties will give suggestions for her biggest hits, so I will focus on some of her FAN favorites because those are what ultimately turn a casual fan into a swiftie. (Swifties love to compare their rankings of songs and, for the vast majority of them, you will not find Taylor's biggest radio hits in their top-10 lists. It's the deeper cuts that hit...well...the deepest. Here are a few of her fan favorites that also give examples of her wide-ranging styles: Reputation Stadium Tour movie: intro + "ready for it?" kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIKtkplsptZroLM Ready For It? A few little details I love about the Blank Space video/song… When she’s laying down eating the candy, it’s one of those Sweet Hearts candies… She’s literally a “heart eater”. The lyric, “I can make all the tables turn” works on three levels: 1) She’s turning the tables on the boyfriend by going from dream girl to lunatic 2) She’s turning the tables on the media portrayal of her by embracing it, turning it into art and throwing it back as a hit song 3) She can make turntables turn. (If you’re not well acquainted with T.S. it might sound like I’m reading too much into it, but Taylor loves word play.) The clicking sound she makes after, “I’ve got a blank space, baby…” is supposed to be the sound of a pen clicking. Oh - and I agree with pausing as little as possible (or not at all) the first time through! You’re absolutely right that you’re not experiencing a song when you do that.

Just so you are aware TS is in the middle of re-recording her first six albums to gain ownership of the master recordings for those songs since her old label sold them to SB who pretty quickly sold them to a venture capital firm despite her attempts to buy the rights to the original masters. Any songs off the first six albums marked Taylor's Versions or TV are the versions she owns. Anything marked From the Vault were written at the same time as the rest of the album, but didn't end up on the original album and are added to the TV. Don't assume that bonus tracks indicate anything about quality, sometimes they just don't fit the vibe of the standard album and are still great. Also her new album The Tortured Poets Department drops on 4/19 in case you want to take advantage of the algorithm.

Not only is Taylor a very devoted cat lover, her cats are major pop icons in their own right. Her first two cats, named Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson, after two of Taylor's favorite TV characters, are both Scottish fold cats. Her youngest cat, Benjamin Button, is a rag doll cat. Notably, her second cat, Olivia, has become such a big social media star that she (yes, I mean the cat, Olivia Benson) has a reported net worth of 93 million dollars. And, even at that, she is only the second or third richest pet in the world. I think I read that the richest is a German bulldog or something like that.

Welcome to the rabbit hole. I started down it about 8 month ago with the same level of knowledge as you stated and haven’t regretted it (except that I am hooked and can’t get enough). Loved your reactions, but I would like to make a small suggestion. I know you said you don’t like to pause to comment, but prefer to watch it through to really get the sense of it as a whole. That is a perfectly valid approach as is stopping and both can be enjoyable. However, you might want to look back at how much you are actually commenting though the playing of the video and consider either briefly pausing to do that or if not, when you do find yourself commenting, back the video up by 10-20 seconds to catch what you just commented over. In my limited time getting into TS work, I have found that missing lyrics can be critical to not really getting the best experience or sense of her music. There are very few “throw away” lyrics in her songs and when you miss even a few seconds of them you can miss overall meaning in her music. Again, I personally don’t mind either approach stopping or not as I have seen reactors do both well, but I do think you (and some of your audience) might limit your own experience if you comment over lyrics. And again not at all criticizing doing it even while it is playing, just back up so you don’t miss a juicy tidbit covered by a legit reaction to a prior tidbit. 😊 For Taylor Swift reactions this can be a game changer.

Hi Molly! Welcome to the endless rabbit hole that is Taylor Swift. If you like rock music, she does have a few songs that have some rock influence to them. I would definitely recommend reacting to "Haunted" from her album Speak Now, or "Don't Blame Me" live from the reputation tour. Great reaction, can't wait to see what you react to next!

I'm interested in watching your Taylor Swift journey, so of course I subscribed and liked! Because you're from rock and metal, it's good that you avoided a chronological start with what I loosely categorize as teen girl country. I also agree with your approach of starting primarily with hits and music videos, because they have the broadest public appeal, rather than the deeper cuts that established swifties often like more. Her 4th album "Red" is a transition of half country songs and half pop songs. From her 5th album "1989" through her 10th and current album "Midnights", I loosely categorize Taylor's musical journey as young adult pop, adult pop/rock, adult indy/folk, and adult pop. I think you'll most easily take a liking to the Reputation album. Taylor Swift is right in my wheelhouse...I like almost every Taylor Swift song. I hope and expect you'll have an interesting and enjoyable journey!

First, thank You for being so open. I'd be lying if I said I didn't think she is for everyone. I think her music is universal, thats why she's so loved. And for me that's a plus. She is touching people of every age, every race, sexuality. Her music is simply good. Blank Space is very safe and reasonable choice. It's her most popular song. But if you want to focus on lyricism I recomend something from folklore/evermore. For example "cardigan". But I think You should ask Your sister for recomendation. ❤

You’re right-She did have a blast with this video! She said the media painted her as a serial dater who can’t keep a man and then goes crazy when they leave. And she jet sets them all around the world etc. She said the person they described was so interesting she decided to lean into it and created this song! She’s such a cat lady! Imagine Dragons have a cool cover of this song also.

All too well is both a quite big single, as well as being a very well loved by all fans who enjoy deeper cuts and lyrical focus. I would sugest watching lyric video first and then short film, cause the lyrics are the most loved part of the song and people have hard time with focusing on them by watching the mv/short film. And later you can focus on the acting more knowing the lyrics and story of the song

Eventually, Look What You Made me Do should be on your list. BUT, please try to do a bit of research into Kim / Kanye vs Taylor with the song Famous feud…. It’s kinda important to know that history before watching that video. To a lesser extent, there is also a part in it that is in regards to a brief feud between Taylor & Katy Perry (Bad blood was all about this feud)…. But, it’s really just a small part in the video.

I agree about Look What You Made Me Do. In order to really appreciate this song and iconic video (and, actually, quite a few songs on the Reputation album), you need context. Bare minimum, you need to know that Kanye West released a highly edited phone call between him and Swift that made her look like a liar who was publicly attacking him for the sake of publicity. A heavy online and media backlash ensued that appeared to cancel Swift. The release of the song LWYMMD, and accompanying video, announced her comeback. (The video is an indispensable piece of the T.S. “canon”.) Also good to know that, as part of the backlash, Kim Kardashian called T.S. a “snake”, causing thousands of people to bombard Swift’s social media with snake emojis. (Sounds a bit silly/not a big deal but, within the larger context of everything that was going on, it was cruel.)

@@JenniferDomitrovits-xu9df yeah, it wasn’t actually until I watched videos breaking down the details in LWYMMD that I became a fan. I went back and started actually watching and listening to her music and became hooked with how her brain works.
