He was in love with a girl. Girls in the 70s carried their diaries with that little brass lock and wrote in it in tranquil places, like under a tree. When he read that she was in love he thought she was writing about him. He envisioned their life together. But as he continued to read he realized she was in love with someone else. Listen to “If”.

Bread is just one of my absolute favorite groups from the mid-60's & early 70's. The song, Diary, was written by lead singer, David Gates (and Bread), and was released in 1970 as a single from their album "Baby I'ma Want You". The album & song were a breakout success reaching #3 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, eventually dropping to #11 where it remained for a total of 15 weeks. In the early 70's their popularity started to wane and in late 1973 they eventually disbanded. I still listen to them on my many playlists. David Gates, the lead singer, retired quite a few years ago to become a full-time Cattle Rancher (located on 1,400 acres in Washington). He married a gal named Jo Rita in 1958 and raised four kids. Three are lawyers and one is a cardiothoracic surgeon. To my knowledge, he and his wife are still alive and kicking, as well as all 4 children.

@Black Pegasus. Before and after I met my husband, I prayed that God would teach me how to love as God loves. When I met my husband, neither of us were Christian. Six years in and the medical crises that ended my husband's career and took away his identity as a man culminated in a separation from one another. I tell you that to tell you this: I became a Christian and prayed daily for my husband's soul, regardless of whether or not we reunited. His well being meant more to me than my happiness or my suffering. And I cried for myself every day for the five months we were separated. But, I was made aware by God's word that for the first time in my life, I cared more about another human being than I cared about myself. God had answered my prayer. Thirteen years later, we celebrated 20 years of marriage. A month and a half later, my husband came to faith as a Christian. Life has not been easy and I am far from perfect. Nevertheless, I have two powerful examples of the love of God in my life, not including my own salvation. Pray brother. We have not because we ask not. God longs to mature us in the faith. He is faithful.

You know I never interpreted this song as a betrayal song. I always imagined it was like three childhood friends (two guys and a girl) and one day he happens upon her diary and is shocked to read that she loves him. His imagination starts in and he thinks “you know what, I think I might love her too, how could I have missed it all these years” and he just goes all in. But then as he rereads it he starts to realize that it’s actually the other friend she loves and his new found feelings for a lifelong friend sort of get dashed and it breaks his heart. But it’s his best friends and no betrayal took place so, even though he’s a little heartbroken, he can genuinely wish them the best. It’s possible my brain filled in some gaps…🙃

David Gates has been happily married to his high school sweetheart since 1959. He was 18/19 years old. He was 16 when he wrote & recorded a song about his girlfriend (later wife) Jo. The song "Diary" was released in 1972, so it most likely was not a song about his personal life.

In my opinion, David Gates has one of the most romantic voices ever. Every time I hear something from Bread...I go full "onions"...who's crying, I'm not crying! 😉 For what it's worth, I approach songs with "ambiguous" actions in them - (he's reading her diary, he shouldn't be reading her diary) with a grain of salt. Think of your thoughts when you first heard the Pina Colada song. It's a storyteller telling a story. Music is so subjective - that's what I love about it. Try "Aubrey", on your next Bread adventure. It's another beautiful unrequited love song from Gates.

I would recommend "If " as isn't my favorite partly because of the underneath the tree part. That being said, it's very sad, and I tear up over it because he really thought she loved him. That's true heartbreak. Pain that might be with you forever. But then there's the F you and yo mama!! Guys. Whatever you feel you do you! I may be wrong, but I think BP might be a secret sensitive that covers with the ugly anger. Hey, if she was the B word, then guys don't waste your time on her and don't let her waste your time being sad or being. Anger and sorrow just eat at you and waste so many hours of your life you can never get back.

We don't all live in big concrete cities. For me, the thought is not hard to imagine at all. Trees on fence lines. Along backroads, even dirt roads. In fields between houses or farms. In people's sprawling backyards or in a quiet niche in a little backyard. Lots of trees creating a peaceful, private atmosphere to think and share one's thoughts with one's self.

The very notion of a SIMP is BS right from the start. (Argument for you to lose another day.) And as it pertains to this song, and this band - the higher ground of love. Bread is a religious reference. That's the source of the sweetness in so many of their songs. The idea is to care for others more than yourself. This song merely follows through on that premise. And for those who can't handle it - too bad.

Etiquette tells us one shouldn't read another's diary. The song story line is that he assumed he was reading about himself, and pressed her to marry him, and wished to honor her by giving her all her wants. Upon finding more writings, he finally figures out it was never him in the first place, so he does for his love to let her go and become the other's wife, and wishes them the best. It is a song about presumptions of self and upon that realization, personal honor in letting go. The song is a classic and speaks more of the mentality of the late 60s/early 70s (written by Bread in 1972) of women's subservience to men, when compared to the modern era of today were women are more considered equals in a relationship. It also speaks to me about how modern society has many with a lack of faith in trusting their loved ones. Communication is the key to every relationship, and if she had communicated to him that she loved another as written in the diary, rather than agreeing to marry, the last verse wouldn't exist. To me, the only "tragedy" about this song is that the orator made an early assumption, but was honorable to wish them all the sweet things they may find.

As for this one, this is a classic & 'back in the old days', after chores were done, our parents told us to 'go outside', so teen girls grabbed a blanket, a book & a shade tree. We had no phones, iPad's, cell phones etc. If we were lucky, our buddies could meet us 'under our tree'. When you react to these older songs, you have to look at them from the time that they were written. It was very common for girls to write in Diaries back in the seventies, and yes, if a guy found your diary, he was going to read it. That's why they had locks on them and keys. LOL, I was a teen in the 70s, and I love all this music that you do. I believe this performance in 1978 was in London after a”break up” of the band, that’s why they aren’t there. I think they might have reunited after that for a couple of concerts, but not sure. There were big disagreements with David Gates and Jimmy Griffin about whose songs would be sung. Both were singer songwriters. I also believe that Griffin had a drug problem, too.
