This song is unique and you might not be truly open as you might think. Not that one has to have the background to enjoy, it might help to know a few things. Made 1975 (consider the world at that time) it was 6-7 min long nearly double length. The video helped launch the existence of MTV and the music video industry itself. The song is 5 kinds of music (rarely do songs merge more than 2 if any) A CAPELLA... is this real or just fantasy BALLAD ... mama just killed a guy OPERA ... a silhouette of a man ROCK ... you think you can stop me CODA ... nothing really matters what may be happening in the song A CAPELLA... questioning situation BALLAD ... admition / realization OPERA ... judgement / pleading ROCK ... anger / consequences CODA ... resolve / acceptance Freddie would never say what it's about and wants each listener to decide for themselves. One very widely aggreed idea is it's Freddie killing off the heterosexual side of himself. Freddie was 29 in 1975 and gay or on the cusp... it was illegal to be gay up until 1967 (only 8 years earlier) so legal issues plagued this part of society. I personally love how much the video reminds me of 'Oliver' from 1968~1972 both visually and storyline. I don't know your preference of music but I would suggest Somebody to Love live in Montreal 1981. Or Dragon Attack same concert. Stone Cold Crazy from 1974 live at the Rainbow. They are all worth the time.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a masterpiece but not everyone is going to like it. Art is subjective so don't listen to people trying to browbeat you over it if it's not your cup of tea. As others have said, I think you should check out some of their other songs. Queen was all over the map with different genres. Somebody to love, live in Montreal is my favorite. The Studio version of Don't Stop me Now is a much more upbeat song that you might like. Other Queen songs you've probably heard of but didnt know they were by Queen. We Will Rock you and We are the Champions to name two of the most famous.

This is probably the wrong song to start listening to Queen with, those of us who grew up with it love it, mostly because it was so different from anything else, not to mention the video was so weird, all music videos before it were just footage of the band playing their song. There are over 200 Queen songs covering all genres in use between 1940 and 1990 all Queen fans have their favourites some of which have been mentioned in these comments, so I will not add to them, just try some of those suggested and hopefully you will enjoy the ride down the Queen rabbit hole.

This song has influenced many reviewers to take a journey into Queen. Now that you've HEARD it, LISTEN TO IT. Get a set of good headphones and take the *RIDE* known as Bohemian Rhapsody!! Not only a technical masterpiece, it also has a meaning that you don't understand until you understand Freddy's journey in life. The MAN he killed was himself, and the song documents his moral quarrel with himself, and his religious beliefs after discovering he "liked" men.

😄Hey Hon, Please don't feel "put off" if you don't "get" or absolutely love this song.... BoRhap is possibly Queen's most famous song - and it's AWESOME that you reacted to it - but, to be honest, there are other Queen/Freddie Mercury songs that are my favorites. The unusual thing about Queen, is that they honestly/literally did music in EVERY different style/genre you could imagine (NO other band/singer can make that claim, I don't think): Progressive Rock The very first "Thrash Metal" Rock 1920s-style Jazz Old-fashioned Folk music Blues/Gospel Motown style "Stadium Rock" anthems Acoustic ballads ...and Freddie Mercury made an entire album of opera. So there's for sure something that you would like in their music catalog, depending on what your taste is. FYI, Queen is actually the ONLY band who are famous for being BETTER LIVE than in-studio (I even prefer "Bohemian Rhapsody" better in their live performances). NOTHING beats Freddie Mercury's live vocals/his audience interaction! So, whenever possible, it's better to go with reacting to a live performance. If you decide to try watching "Bohemian Rhapsody" again, I'd suggest watching it live at: MONTREAL in 1981. You could also try: "SOMEBODY TO LOVE" live at either: MONTREAL in 1981 or MILTON KEYNES BOWL in 1982 "ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST" live at MONTREAL, 1981 "FAT BOTTOMED GIRLS" live at MILTON KEYNES, 1982 "DRAGON ATTACK" live at MONTREAL, 1981 "UNDER PRESSURE" live at WEMBLEY STADIUM in 1986 "WHITE QUEEN" live at ODEON HAMERSMITH in 1975 "COOL CAT" (There's no live performance for this) "ONE VISION" official MV😊

Sorry for the long comment but I’d like you to know what you listened to. A rhapsody is a musical composition that connects several different melodies into one long song. This song came out in 1975 when I was in high school so I am very old. Freddie Mercury was an amazing talent. His voice was pure joy and his song writing was stellar. Brian May on lead guitar is a genius. Literally, he has a PhD in Astrophysics. The story, most importantly, is about when Freddie decided to come out of the closet and tell his Mum and the world, that he was gay. Symbolically he put a gun to the head of the man his Mum and everyone else thought he was. This was the 70s and being gay was a death sentence, personally, socially and professionally. Sadly, Freddie died from AIDS in 1990. He made a statement that he had AIDS and a few days later he was gone. He was a genius but like all of us, we have struggles. I am grateful God shared Freddie with the world before taking him home. There will NEVER another Freddie Mercury. As a suggestion, be open to new and different music. There is a world of incredible sounds out there if you just let it in. Sometimes it’s in the message, sometimes it the artistry or vocals but try to find the beauty in the all of it. You will like it if you let it in. That wall around your world is holding you back…. Let the music in. Music is life!
@w4ization

Good stuff you wrote there, just a couple of corrections. Freddie passed away towards the end of 1991, not in 1990. And Freddie was Bi, not gay, especially when he wrote this song. His most significant relationship in his life was with Mary Austin who he even proposed to, she lived with him and was by his side, holding his hand when he died. He left half his estate as well as his main mansion to her. "Love of My Life" was written by Freddie for her.

You shouldn't feel defensive for not enjoying the song. Likewise, most Queen fans don't listen to The Temptations or Ray Charles so why should they expect vice versa? I think all people can ask for is that you at least recognize and / or appreciate musical Talent, even though it may not be what you listen to-- and that's whay you've done.

L0L! Our ears aren't used to this music when we start out. BUT BUT BUT ... don't throw them OR THIS SONG away. It's a masterpiece and a true gem- from a truly great band. Listen to it again, but this time, listen to the change of pace, the change of style, the guitar, the delicate piano melody, the PERFORMANCE, the vocals and the words again. It is one of the greatest peices of music every performed. If you appreciate the genius that went into this- and the emotional investment, it becomes more valuable than gold! There's a lot of feeling in this. I always think this songs was a response to the terrible news that he contracted "that" sickness. ("Momma... just killed a man..") It is thoughtful, it is filled with emotion and it really sounds like a "goodbye". 😢 Anyway, I can guarantee you, you will grow to love this song!

Mia, you're not alone if this song confuses you. Lots and lots of us were confused when this song was released. Queen did not interpret their songs. They felt that the listener should interpret their own understanding of their songs and how it relates to themselves. Once you learn the back story of Freddie in more detail, my guess is that you will be able to understand the depth of this song. Listen, then listen again after you get to know the deep complexities of Freddie's life and the genius of this song.

Some don't get it straight away. Everyone is entitled to an opinion of course. Sometimes there is something that a majority like but others don't so much. Just how it goes. Other times though you will find yourself on the majority side and be thinking that the people who don't like what you really do must be missing something. :D Again that's life and opinions and how it goes at times. But this song is a masterpiece in the eyes of people generally. When the greatest songs of all time have been voted on over the years this one is always in the top 5, often 3 and higher, sometimes at 1. Queen songs cover a lot of variety and different genres. They really mixed things up. This song is iconic also no one knows for sure what it means Freddie never told anyone that's how he wanted this one to be. He wanted people to make up their own ideas and have a song for themselves so to speak. That's actually genius imo.

I remember hearing this song when it 1st came out (1975 - I was in 8th grade) and thinking it was the weirdest thing I'd ever heard, but the more I heard it, the more I liked it & it's now one of my favorites. Give it a few listens & I think you'll start to appreciate it more. You should watch the crowd sing this song before a Greenday concert in 2017 in Hyde Park. They even sing the guitar riffs. This song is a cultural icon. It was 42 years old and probably 90% of the crowd hadn't even been born when it was released, but they ALL (55k-60k) knew EVERY word and note. People say "God Save The King/Queen" is England's national anthem, (which Queen actually does a cover of 😮) but personally I think it's Bo Rhap. 😝

I got to know Queen's music thanks to my father he was an amateur musician. I buy a Queen album called "INNUENDO" in 1991 and without knowing it that was the last album with Freddie Mercury because he died in that very year. And there was this song, the first track on the album that had this part played on a flamenco guitar, it always stayed in my head, I was a child I didn't understand much of what I was listening to but over time I started to get very interested. I realized it wasn't just music and it almost became a religion that Queen members are absolutely amazing people and Freddie Mercury has gone beyond being just a singer. Someday if you get the chance I suggest you watch a documentary about Queen, who knows it might even become your favorite band😊

@@DoIttMiaaaa that's not a long time, I, like many others have been listening to them for years, I can remember where I was the first time I heard a queen song, it was 1974 I was in my dad's car and the petrol station we were at had a queen song playing,I'd never heard anything like it before,I was hooked, I didn't even know what the song was called, I eventually found out, that it was "killer queen" I'm sure that you'll get plenty of suggestions for queen songs,

This Was The First Queen Song I Reacted To & As You Can See I Wasn’t Impressed 🥴 & In My Comment Section Were Suggestions Of A Ton Of Other Queen Songs . As I Was Hesitate , I Figured I’d Give Queen Another Shot . IM GLAD I DID !! Bc I Love Freddie , Brian & Roger & I’ve Learned So Much About The Band Over The Last Month Or So . Now , I’m Currently Stuck In The Queen Rabbit Hole 🕳 🐇

Been a Queen fan since 1974 ( 48 years ), Early Queen is not always easy to get into straight away, you have to consider the era in which Queen began and take into consideration the historical times, this is a Freddie masterpiece and a song ahead of it's time. Early Queen, in my opinion, is the best of Queen.

Steven , You Said This So Well . Honestly I Didn’t Go Into This Reaction “ Open Minded “ I Was To Immature To Really Listen To The Words & Understand The Meaning . I Was Distracted By The Video Also , (Forgetting Things Were Different Back Then) I’ve Recently Heard Queen Preform This Song Live & I Actually Like It A Whole Lot Better Lol . Thank You For Taking The Times Out To Leave A Comment 🙂

@@DoIttMiaaaa Hi Miaaaa thank you for your reply. I wasn't criticising you i hope you didn't think i was. To me music is the same as art, literature etc - you have to view it in the historical context with a little understanding of the artists, authors etc. When Queen formed, they were previously a band named Smile and when the lead singer left Freddie took over as lead singer and changed the name to Queen in 1970, this is before John Deacon the bass player ( by the way John saw them in 1970 and wasn't very impressed lol ) joined the band in 1971, although they did a few gigs in 1970 without John as Queen the members themselves don't officially recognise the band as being formed until 1971 hence 2021 saw Queen Productions release limited edition vinyl singles to celebrate their 50th anniversary. So, in the 1970's the big rock bands / stars were already established in the music industry and Queen found it hard to break into the music scene, they were broke and were ripped off by their then manager - Freddie wrote a song about him called 'death on two legs', he doesn't hold back on what he thinks about him lol. Queen then, were looking to create something new, a new sound, a new look, and Freddie being very creative and flamboyant was the perfect frontman to take them there - Freddie loved all genres of music so experimented with mixing these genres. I think as someone doing a reaction it's good to be honest about what you hear and see, we can't all like the same music, indeed there are some Queen songs i don't like, however i think, as i said before, one needs to also take into consideration other factors, we may not like a particular song but we can appreciate the talent and the era in which it was created etc. Good luck if you decide to pursue Queen's music it's a huge catalogue of songs all very different. If you are interested may i suggest you begin at the beginning with the album Queen, you will see on your journey how the music progressed and such things as how Bo Rap came about by the sound of some of the previous songs leading up to Bo Rap. Love them or hate them i don't really think anyone could honestly say that they aren't talented.

@@bluebell3720 Yes I meant generally and in the USA. I think the big pop culture moment that got people thinking about the song over here was probably Wayne's World. That does not mean that individuals and legit Queen fans weren't aware of it or that they hated it. It was one of my high school theater's warm up/ritual songs. We all got in a big group and sang it together before every performance. The song means a lot to me personally.

That was the great and genuine reaction. If you've never heard music like this, it can be very jarring. Your journey has just begun. I've enjoyed most of Queen's music since their first, and, IMHO, best album, 'Queen' (1973). That self-titled album made everyone sit up and take notice. Bohemian Rhapsody and the album 'Night At The Opera' (1975) made them superstars. I honestly didn't care for this song when it was released, but it was a phenomenon. I eventually grew to like it, but it's not my 'go to' Queen song.
