Michael Stipe, the lead singer of R.E.M., wrote this song directed towards teenagers, because their suicide rate is SO high. It is meant as a song of comfort and understanding. In the live versions of this song, you clearly hear him sing "you're not alone." All of their music is best heard live

Wasn’t it written for someone who he knew that had committed suicide
@subwaygoddess1 Жыл бұрын
@@jemmajames6719 I don’t know about that. I know he wrote “Camera” for an old girlfriend who became a friend ,when she died, but that wasn’t suicide, that was a car accident.

One day I hopped into my grandmothers car (she had taken My sister and I out of state while my mom was struggling with life) and I saw this cassette in her car. I asked who’s it was cause I knew someone must have left it in there by mistake. She told me that while at a convention a few weeks prior the motel she was staying in had a piano player and after hearing him play this song she went up and said that is the most beautiful melody is this your own song? He wrote down REM and told her it was just a cover. She then told me that she didn’t think this song could be anymore beautiful that what she had already heard until she heard the lyrics. This song resonates so deeply in me and every time I hear it I’m reminded of her. After she passed away while cleaning out her home I ran across a notebook where she had written down her own struggles of trying to raise my sister and I alone and then it hit me that the beautiful, always smiling, gospel singing granny used this song as a reminder!

4:43 his wife in the back seat gets me every time with him saying good bye. Makes me ball every time. I pray to God that me and my husband die around the same time. For anyone here that reads this and is alone, stay strong. God works in mysterious ways. I did not meet my husband until I was 32 and we were born in the same town and in the same hospital just 16 days apart.
@MrDiddyDee2 жыл бұрын
The bit where you paused it, it gets me every time that old guy's face and the simple thought 'She's gone', it's like he's returning from a funeral and it finally hits him. You just know this song here has saved someone's life, that refrain at the end 'Hold on!' is a light in the darkest hour.

In a car in a traffic jam, everybody may be in his or her car alone but this encourages them to realize the traffic jam is filled with "alone" people. No one us really alone. In life, we may think our lives have come to a stop like a car in a traffic jam. Going forward can seem an impossibility to a depressed person. But everybody hurts, we just need to help each other move forward as all those people did who got out of their cars and walked away together.

This song has SAVED so many lives....including mine...in so many dark and hopeless times.💔 It has been used a lot in suicide awareness campaigns - it's heart-breaking, but somehow gives you hope? Such an important song for so many people. I was crying with you 😢crying is a release from pain...like the song says Everybody Hurts & some of us almost take that final step..... Michael Stipe was a good friend of Kurt Cobain, and was devastated when he committed suicide just a year after this single was released. But as we know, for some people, the PAIN is just too much 🖤 R.E.M. will always be remembered for giving people this timeless saviour. Much love to you from Ireland 💚

They were such a great band. I remember when I first heard them on College alternative radio when I was a student here at the University of kansas. It sounded so new and yet they play those 12-string guitars and so it reminded me of the birds from the late sixties. Which was their signature sound but that first EP sounds way different than their later stuff. But at the time it just sounded so new and different and it kind of let us know that the Athens music scene was really happening. The B-52's came out of there as well. And so when they came through town, I saw them at a small venue here that I was actually playing at a lot because I was in a local band. They tumbled out of their little van with the white trailer behind it, Michael Stipe in his Fringe Brown jacket, and I was there for the sound check, so I help them carry a few things in and I remarked to Michael that it smells like they all needed to take a bath because well you know. But that's life in a van. But then he was hilarious, he exaggerated and he said hey dude, none of us have bathed in 4 weeks! Anyway it was a fantastic show. I love their whole catalog from that first time I ever heard them all the way through. They're just so easy to like to me.

Children & teenagers should hear this song now more than ever! So many are overwhelmed with the Social & Economic dilemma that they face! As the Bible says... which is best... to save your body or save your soul? Time is short so getting Born Again ASAP is crucial! Believe & cry out to Lord Jesus Christ before the soon Rapture! Repent & Trust in Him! Maranatha! 🙏🏻💖💞
