Wow, I didn't expect a reaction to Hum but soo happy you did this! We appreciate that you select more obscure stuff and not just what's trending. That's cool. "Inlet" from 2020 is a must as well. Hum had a 21 year hiatus, it just kind of came out of nowhere and was a pleasant surprise! If you're still taking requests, I want to suggest Elastica's debut "Elastica" from '95, a seminal album from the Britpop era they were huge here in the UK.

Great reaction as always! I've often heard this group compared to a band called FAILURE, who made an album called "Fantastic Planet" in 1996. It's one of the best albums I've ever heard! If anyone agrees with me, let Molly know. Maybe she'll react to it someday!

I always thought Failure and Hum were similar, and they even have a similar career trajectory as well: 90's bands who took a long hiatus at the end of that decade, only to come back recently.

Yes, great comment! They balance their sound on this record beautifully, the dynamic between soft and restrained and then the flood of heaviness comes rushing in is so good. At times I felt like I was completely surrounded by sound when listening to this record.

@@mollyesanborn I don’t think they well. Inlet was the last album they did and that one came 22 years after downward. I think that sometimes the magic between certain people is its own entity that can’t be filled with another line up in Hum’s case. I’m honestly ok if they are done. Still do this day they are the loudest band I’ve ever seen live.

One of those rare albums that scratches every conceivable itch for good rock music from this time period. You can listen to it 100 times and still catch new sounds and details you’ve never noticed before. Hum reached Radiohead-level brilliance here, it’s still so massively underrated

Awesome reaction Molly, thank you for sharing. Always have had a soft spot for HUM. I was so fortunate to see them live 9 years ago, it was amazing. For any fans out there that may not know, they have a website with a bunch of free songs to download, including a bunch of unreleased music. One of them: "Boy with stick" is an incredible sound and atmosphere. Probably my fav song. You rock Molly!

Fantastic choice as always! Love how you brought up them doing so much with so little, to me that sums up what makes the alternative music around this time so great! Using production and guitar effects to build an atmosphere that makes that “beautiful sludge” sound Another more modern band that could be described that way is Kylesa (kinda like a more psychedelic Mastodon) - Spiral Shadow is a great album to check out :)

I remember first hearing about Hum waaaay back on Mtv's late night rotation. I can't recall if it was in the middle of an episode of Beavis and Butthead (they would sometimes clip in music videos for B&B to headbang to, and Stars was included once), or if I just saw them on....was it called Liquid TV? The block of videos from like 1am-4am, when they played the weird shit. Anyway, heard Stars and fell in love with it.

Oh, yeah. Hum - Downward is Heavenward. Inlet is amazing, too. Some of my favorite guitar sounds ever. Check out Big Wreck - In Loving Memory Of… if you haven’t already. Very different sound from Hum, but another underrated 90’s band.

Since you reacted to Hum, I think you should listen to Fantastic Planet by the band Failure, an absolutely excellent album, even A Perfect Circle and Paramore covered some songs from the album. Failure is a very very respected band in the rock music industry, i just can't recommend them enough

Great album. Compared to You'd Prefer an Astronaut, the band slowed down the pace a bit, adding more atmospherics to the sound, resulting in the abrasive but beautifully graceful nature of the album. Afternoon With The Axolotls, Green to Me & Apollo are my favorites. It's a shame that the album went completely unnoticed, which ultimately led to Hum's breakup. I was so glad when they finally released something new. Inlet is an awesome record as well.

This album is beautiful, it's got such a well developed atmosphere to it and I love how it's heavy but they deliver that weight with such a delicateness at the same time. @@tetfol3315 I probably lean more toward Raise also, if not just for the fact that it’s so innovative in its sound considering the other rock music of its time, and it still holds up well today. Feel So Real, Pile Up, Rave Down, Deep Seat are some of my favorite songs I listen to regularly, but if recommending to other people, I’d probably go with Mezcal Head to introduce them and then go back to listen to Raise

@@mollyesanborn while the Hum singer stays a bit distant in his delivery, jeremy enigk from SDRE comes a lot closer. i recommend the debut album DIARY. there is a live in studio-version as well, recorded&released just some months ago.

The best HUM album. Especially against the very overrated predecessor, You'd Prefer An Astronaut The band .hopesfall. carried on their legacy. Especially their most recent album "Arbiter"

C'mon Molly. If you can react to Hum, you can check out Phish. They've only played at Madison Square Gardens 60 times, and sold it out 23 times. Kind of hard for Hum and other such bands to do.

They influenced The Deftones productionwise, they even admitted that. I like how their sound is grand, only one thing I don't like...weak lyrics.

Yeah there's absolutely some similarities between Hum's sound and Deftones. Both bands really embrace that fuzzy, atmospheric style to their music.

The Lyrics aren’t weak. Each song is a part of the story in the album. And you’re only hearing snippets instead of the full lyrics In these videos.

I think he writes great lyrics, especially on Inlet. Waves and Step Into You have really creative lyrics

Inlet is worth listening to also, sound production is very cool, just a band doing what they want without being controlled, true to themselves but still keeping it modern, most rock bands today don’t have a unique sound that also rocks hard and isn’t the same generic commercial boring crap. Other 90s bands to definitely check out are Swervedriver (Raise or Mezcal Head are great albums), Failure, Jawbox, Sebadoh, Seam, Braid, Texas is the Reason, Quicksand, Paw, Polvo, Tad
