Woohoo, Prong! Such an influential band. Guitarist/vocalist Tommy Victor has played guitar with Ministry, drummer Ted Parsons played drums on Godflesh's Hyms album and Jesu's albums, and bassist on this album was the legendary Paul Raven, played bass for Ministry and the incredible Killing Joke (who were a HUGE influence on Prong). Hope you check out their previous 2 records, Beg To Differ and Prove You Wrong as well, 2 groundbreaking classics. Also add Coroner's Mental Vortex album to your list as well! Another great reaction, cheers from New Zealand!

Oh wow I didn't realize that members of Prong had also been involved with Ministry and Godflesh. Makes total sense now why I can hear such a strong crossover between the sounds of all three bands. They do that heavy, crushing industrial fused with a sort of catchy and borderline danceable undertone so well. Killing Joke is definitely a band I'll plan on getting to in the future as well, can't wait to hear them! I'll have to do more of Prong's albums too. This record really walked close to the Industrial sound, but kept some Thrash elements, so I figured you'd like it. The sound at 3:10 is a bass with some heavy wah pedal thrown on it, like Cliff Burton's Anesthesia on the first Metallica record. I actually saw them open up for Pantera on this tour. Phil and Dime came out to sing along when Prong played a song called Prove You Wrong, then during Pantera's set, Prong came out and they all passed a bong around while they covered Black Sabbath's Planted Caravan. Their earlier stuff is great, Prove You Wrong for sure.

@leonelsjanofwipper34184 ай бұрын
You are right about Ministry. They and Prong were generally mentioned in the same Industrial breath (and you're also right it shows how big Pantera's Vulgar Display influence was on metal.) If you go further back you probably end up with Jim Thirwell's 'Foetus' projects in the 80s. (also a recommendation. Try the '89 compilation album 'Sink' under the name Foetus Inc. It's a nice mix of outtakes from 80-89) Interesting thing about this album is the production. It's kinda odd actually. Where normally bands do record everything separately but will create a mix where it sounds like they played together here, especially on Snap your Fingers, they went the opposite way. Everything sounds separate. Guitar way up front and bone dry, drums bone dry. Vocal a bit in the back. As a sound engineer it actually sounds 'not finished' or 'mix gone wrong' but I'm pretty sure it was very intentional.
@mollyesanborn4 ай бұрын
Yeah, certainly a lot of industrial elements to Prong's sound, but then they've got that sort of modern groove that makes their music so dang catchy too. I love it! That is an interesting observation about the production, certainly an interesting way of going about recording an album. I enjoy how it sounds though, it sort of has this isolated quality to it.

Prong has to be one of tHE most influential hard music bands from the last 40 years. "Force Fed" is very hardcore-esque, thrashy. I love it. "Beg to Differ" is a little more "groove metal" (a term I don't really like). I think you'd like that record. "Prove You Wrong" is great for Prong fans (Unconditional is a stand out track), but is a little hit and miss. "Cleansing" is incredible. The addition of Paul Raven was a genius move. "Rude Awakening" is very Cleansing pt 2...a little more electronic. They basically broke up and then reformed....the album "Power of the Damager" is a killer return. The albums after that, for me, become a little formulaic and less interesting to me personally.

Prong was formed in NYC in 1986 by Tommy Victor, Ted Parsons and Mike Kirkland (bass)... their 1987 EP 'Primitive origins' was followed by their debut album 'Force Fed' in 1988 w/ a raw, early sound. Signed to major label Epic Records in 1989, Prong blossomed in 1990 w/ their 2nd album 'Beg to differ'... 3rd album 'Prove you wrong' in 1992 featured Troy Gregory (bass) and Prong was capitalizing on the new industrial metal sound of the 90's as well as Pantera's slamming grooves (Prong opened for Pantera in the 90's) After the success of 'Cleansing' in 1994 w/ Paul Raven (bass) joining, Prong released 'Rude awakening' in 1996 but their label dropped the band soon after and Prong split up following the tour. In 2002, Tommy Victor reformed Prong and released a live album "100% live" from that year's tour... followed by the album 'Scorpio rising' in 2003... Victor split his time between Ministry and Prong, releasing 'Power of the damager' in 2007... 'Carved into stone' was released in 2012... followed by 'Ruining lives' in 2014... and a covers album 'Songs from the black hole' (2015). In addition to recording and touring w/ Danzig, Tommy Victor has carried Prong w/ new albums - "X- No absolutes" (2016)... 'Zero days' (2017)... and their most recent release 'State of emergency' (2023)... The current Prong line-up w/ Victor is Jason Christopher (bass) and Tyler Bogliole (drums)

If you like Prong, you'd like Melivins - Houdini One of the heaviest albums in 1993 when it was released. Kurt Cobain actually wrote the song called "Set Me Straight". Also, check out their album called "Stoner Witch".

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely have to check out Melvins soon.

Funny thing is...they were a part of NYHC (Agnostic Front, Biohazard, Sick of It All...) scene but with an industrial aftertaste and at that time Snap your finger Snap your neck was a total hit on mtv...and then they broke up...I've been listening to them from the 2012 and later and I must say...albums are killer, album after album..especially Carved into stone and Ruining lives...in contrast to their old pioneer stuff their newer albums are killer in another freshlike way.

Yeah I'll definitely have to give some of their other albums a listen as well, someone else mentioned how their first album sounds nothing like Cleansing so I'd be very curious to hear more from them!

The electronic samples and industrial sounds....For this album they had a "keyboardist" - John Bechdel...He plays with Ministry now. Prong are my fav metal band ever, Tommy's a legend. I think their most uniqie album is "Prove You Wrong" but I love them all. Underrated! ;) Ona another note, you should listen to High On Fire. Their new album "Cometh The Storm" is a masterpiece!

I would recommend you check out the two Joy Division albums. They're not heavy metal, but somehow it's some of the most powerful music I've ever listened to. If you like those, Turn on the Bright Lights by Interpol is another good one.

Any update on the "the Ethereal Mirror" album reaction? It would be cool to have your opinions on the Album, and I don't think you've reacted to any Doom Metal albums on your channel. I'm guessing there's a schedule of what albums you react to in a month, or a sort of Waiting List? Anyways, Cheers!

I've got your album suggestion on my list, thanks! Yeah, I've got a few reactions filmed already that will be going up next (Pantera, Stone Temple Pilots, Slayer) and I have a few planned out past those three. At some point I should share my full album list with you all, it's getting so long! I've definitely got a lot of great ideas for content, that's for sure :)

Yeah Prong is a lot of fun, this was a great introduction to their music. I'm definitely curious to hear more of their albums now. And yeah I recently moved and rearranged my bookshelf a bit with some of my favorite CDs (the only CD player I have is the one in my car so I listen to them all the time when I'm driving haha)! I've got Facelift, Around The Fur, White Pony, Deftones (self-titled), Short Bus, Meantime, L.D. 50, Calculating Infinity, The Downward Spiral, With Teeth, Year Zero, and Aenima.

@@mollyesanborn that's so cool, I listen to cds in my car all the time too (mostly Dream Theater my favorite band, Blink-182, and The Smashing Pumpkins who I just saw in concert btw!!) It's kinda sad how difficult it is to find a car with a CD player, I got lucky with mine lol So where do you get your cds? Do you have a local record store or what, I usually get mine off Amazon because my local record stores suck XD
@mollyesanborn4 ай бұрын
I know, it's so sad that new cars these days don't have CD players in them anymore. There's something so fun about playing a physical CD while you're driving, I can really appreciate the whole album and I get to hear songs that I otherwise would have forgotten about. I get my CDs at a few record stores near me, I've gotten lucky with finding some good ones!

It's weird listening to this in '24. This + FNM, Minister and Helmet is kinda the blueprint for White Zombie and then a bunch of nu-metal acts that followed and to me it's a shame that nu-metal only really took the more simplistic elements and not the guitar/band wizardry. This was a pretty good time for music, loads of weird/wonderful stuff coming out and going on around this time. Maybe check out Rollins Band "End of Silence" and "Weight" are stunning records.
@mollyesanborn4 ай бұрын
Yeah, definitely some nu metal elements here but Prong fused so much more on this record, I absolutely love the variety of styles that they embrace. I'll have to check out your suggestion for Rollins Band, thanks!
