This album and Cocteau Twins' Heaven Or Las Vegas sound like that. The way that I perceive the album is that the main character has feelings of "nostalgic love" when they start to have feelings for them (basically a crush) or tries to hide pain that they experienced from a breakup or rejection by having positive feelings. By the time the album closes out with soon, the main character realizes that what they were experiencing was not real and decides to confess their feelings to the person they like (or love) so that, at the very least, they can get the eerie feeling they are having off their chest and feel relieved that they at least get to spend any time with the person they are thinking about. Heaven Or Las Vegas on the other hand could be similar in that sense, but applies more to realistic feelings of love rather than feelings of "nostalgic love."

My mom managed a record store in the 80's and 90's so I got a chance to get a lot of free promotional albums. I saw the album cover and gave it a try...listened to it through headphones and was totally blown away. MBV took such liberty with what traditional instruments and effects and a multi-track studio could do and the buried vocals were just another part of the soundscape. Changed my world for sure!

MBV really is all about the sound; 'Loveless' a hugely influential album, sonically. They were known as the loudest band in the world for a time, and in rehearsals they even went over a certain decibel that resulted in them attaining a certain 'high', at their own admission. Saw them in my native Ireland a few years back; no airs or graces, just that famous 'wall of sound'. Trippy and quite beautiful in a weird way. Your comments were apt and insightful :) P.S. 'Sometimes' is my favourite. It was used in Lost in Translation

This album is like a beautiful cacophony of noise, dream pop, and shoegaze cranked up to the point where it sounds like an indescribable euphoric feeling that evades words... i remember listening to this album for the first time, and it changed my life. I will also credit MBV for being the single loudest concert I have EVER been to, due to the 'holocaust' section in the song You Make Me Realise, where they continue the same guitar, bass, and drum sounds to a drone effect, with multiple EQ's, and pre-amp / stage mixes, to the point where people were literally running out of the venue it was so loud! That was why they were giving out free ear plugs before the show.. should have taken them! 🤣 If you are interested in the story of how it was recorded, I would recommend you scope it out! One of the most notorious 'making of' album stories ever!

This album absolutely smashes the idea of shoegaze being a soft and mellow genre of music. It crushes you with so much noise but puts you in a trance at the same time... not sure how they achieve that so well. You're lucky to have seen them live, that sounds like such a wild experience! And yeah I'll definitely have to look into the creation of this album more. Sounds like there's a cool story there!

@MobbareKurtz2 жыл бұрын
In When You Sleep, it actually isn't two vocalists, but rather one. Kevin Shields, the mastermind behind MBV became frustrated with not getting a good take on the vocals. After 12 - 18 takes he got bored with it and just shoved together all of the vocals tracks to one, some pitched up and some down and the result is what you hear. A vaguely distinct voice, which imo sounds really cool.

In 1991 the release of Loveless was perfectly timed to capture the shoegaze sound that mixed pop song structures, ethereal and obscured vocals and the wall of sound. It was interesting that you mentioned the hypnotic nature of some of the songs, pretty sure it is Kevin Shields intention :) I saw them tour this album in 1992, and they played a 22 minute version of You Make Me Realize (a 4 minute song), with the other 18 minutes just one wall of sound; it was like being inside a hurricane.....the entire audience was put into a trance. It was one of the most intense experiences I have had at a live show. Swervedriver is another great band from this era. More straight forward rock than MBV. Mezcal Head is a classic album.

Like being inside a hurricane, that's really descriptive of how this album sounds! There's a soft fuzziness to it, almost like the eye of the storm, but so much roaring sound going on around it. It's my favourite album, get that out the way but I really do think it's so interesting you mentioned you expect it to be soothing but it is actually very intense. That's what MBV are masters at, juxtaposition and being loud and quiet at the same time. For saying it's loud music, really heavily distorted, it's quite easy to fall asleep to. It's awesome music to trip to as well, THKW is a transcendent piece of music. I love noise and distortion and this album has every kind, cold and warm, soft and hard, and some really unique sounds like Blown a Wish, a really weird icy guitar tone. Sometimes they'd sample their vocals and play them on keyboards, and there's a lot of layering Kevin and Belinda's voices together too. I reccomend Cocteau Twins for a completely different approach that takes you to the same sort of place.

If you like this kind of noise rock I suggest early Sonic You "Confusion Is Sex" album is probably the perfect example of Sonic Youth's noise rock album. I have this album and it's great but I have to be in a mood for it at times. If you like Ambient music I highly suggest Brian Eno's stuff if you haven't already. Also David Bowie' album "Low" is a great album for ambient music especially the instrumentals on the B side of the album. I enjoy your perspectives on music from the late 80's to middle 90's, and yes there is some newer music that has come out in the last 15yrs., it's not as easy to find. Great review and thank you.

The feeling this album gives me is so specific. But here it is : It reminds me so much of cold highschool days, probably 2 years before graduation when nothing could be taken seriously in life and the future was so far away. It almost sounds like a fresh mechanical and reckless teenage dream trapped into a repetitive Lo-Fi VHS of some sort (such as in Soon or Only Shallow). This is how I kinda mean it. If it was a taste, it would be probably of a toothpaste, cold yet sweet. Also the texture of gelled/messy hair, school air, glasses, winter hoodies, and coming home after a long day. (Come in Alone)

The ending of to here knows when is the song glider played backwards. On the tremolo EP, the ending for the song was different because to here knows when and soon (the beginning of the glider EP) were recorded specifically for the EP's before they decided to include them on loveless. i only said and soon are my favorite songs on the album, but the whole album is one long song and is really enjoyable. i only said makes me feel like I'm flying everytime I hear the last 2 and a half minutes of the song.

“Loveless” plays more like an electronic album than anything. Like a synthesiser made this album more than guitars and simple pedals (tremolo, reverb, flanger, phaser, etc.) When I first heard it, I almost thought it was like a Boards of Canada record? Ambient, sinister at times, hazy, analogue, spacey sound that makes me happy.

This video made my day, it's so cool to see you react to one of my favorite albums ever * - * (and one of the few albums where the cover looks exactly how the music sounds like) Loveless is the album that made me fall in love with shoegaze, and I find it so funny how a lot of the things you said here are the same things I thought when I listened to it for the first time. There would be a lot of crazy stories about this record (for example how it took over two years to be completed and how it almost bankrupted MBV's record label) and about every single song on it, but I don't think they would fit on a KZbin comment, so maybe you'll find out by yourself ahahah I also wanted to mention how you totally got it right when you mentioned Deftones: MBV has been a huge influence on some of Deftones' works (like KNY, SNW and some stuff on the self titled). To be fair, this album has been a huge influence for a lot of bands from the 90s up to today, it's so big that even MBV themselves waited 22 years before releasing another album! If you like the idea of delving deeper in the shoegaze genre, I recommend listening to the other two MBV albums: "Isn't Anything" (the album that basically started the whole shoegaze movement) and the self titled "m b v"; they're very different from Loveless, but just as good. Aside from MBV, some great shoegaze records from other bands are "Souvlaki" by Slowdive (which leans more in a dream pop direction), "Nowhere" by Ride (more rock/pop oriented, with a lot of inspiration from the psychedelic stuff from the 60s), "Split" by Lush (more punkish at times, with two female vocalists, great great record), and "Everything Else Matters" by Pinkshinyultrablast (a more modern take on the shoegaze genre). With that said, I whish you the best and I'm looking forward to the next video, whatever it will be ^^

As always thanks for watching, I appreciate you! Loved reading your comment, I also agree that the album cover perfectly encapsulates the way this album makes me feel. I will have to delve deeper into shoegaze now, thanks for the album suggestions :)

Sometimes is a masterpiece of sludgy shoegaze ambience. The rising part goes up and up and never seems to get there, so it just keeps pulling you.

good video! i always think about shoegaze as a genre that best shines when it relies on it's creativity and pushing the boundaries of rock music as much as it can, if there's any other album that I think achieves this, that's xuvetyn by lovesliescrushing, I really recommend you listen to that :D

What an album! Back in the arly 90s in the UK we were spoilt for indie music. It was soooo exciting to live through. I loved MBV and the shoegaze thing, Slowdive and Chapterhouse were good but Ride were the best. Check out Nowhere and Going Blank Again, classic albums.

The Shoegaze its a genre very strange, atmospheric, and sad for someone reason, please react to Souvlaki by the band Slowdive, another joy of the Shoegaze.

I didn’t hear about MBV until Billy Corgan did an interview about his influences. I went to Tower Records and bought Loveless, then Isn’t Anything. It’s the strum patterns on songs like “Sometimes” that have been influential and although I changed my singing style, also the soft spoken vocal style.
