I was 8 when this album came out. For those of us that had MTV, Enter Sandman was an introduction to something darker and heavier. Metallica became the standard for most non-metalheads, and opened the doors to explore. I don't think it was until Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power that I knew I was gonna be a full blown metalhead, but I wouldn't have gotten there without the Black Album.

It gets hated because a lot of people seem to forget that these people age. A thirty year old isn't going to make the same album they made at twenty. They get bored and want to branch out. Especially after losing Cliff and all the addictions. It's just natural.

This was the first “new” Metallica for me after getting into them. I can’t say I’ve ever liked this one as much as their earlier albums (Justice is their GOAT, IMO), but it’s obvious it’s the main reason they’re still attracting all the attention they’ve gotten, while their contemporaries (however good) have never quite reached their level of success. They took a chance when it was safer to remain the same.

It was a before and after in rock music, as well as a springboard in the industry and a message about the prejudices and discrimination of metal, making it seen as another genre and not as a trash genre. An album that, despite its creation in '91 and for its current 32 years, crossed borders worldwide, continues to be heard fresher and more recent than the rest of the albums after the black album. Not to mention the number of detractors and people resentful of the abrupt change that the band made after And Justice For All.

It’s interesting that you noted the vocal difference on The Unforgiven, the way it changes between hard and soft vocals. The usual template for Metal ballads is soft or melodic verses, and a heavier chorus. For The Unforgiven, they wanted to reverse it and do a ballad where the verses are heavy, then comes down and becomes softer for the chorus. This was a good review. People consider this as the album where Metallica sold out. And even more so on the next album which is Load. Keep in mind when you do that one, it’s going to be much different than the Metallica albums you’ve done up until this point.

I loved this album when it released, but because of their change in direction to a more radio friendly rock style sound, came major popularity and a new legion of fans, the bandwagon became so overcrowded I stepped off...the new shift definitely paid off for them though, they're the biggest name in "metal", but I do wonder how they'd sound, or if they'd still be around if not for them taking that path..the albums that lead up to the "Black" album for me personally, were that line in the sand, and are the Metallica albums that resonate with me most..no shade on the albums which follow because I haven't heard them, but I'll be joining in on that journey as you get to them Molly, Happy New Year

Im not sure if anybody said that already, but the deep low voice on Of wolf and man was Jason Newsted, the Metallica bassist back then. He used to do a lot of backing vocals at his time in Metallica, even sometimes singing the whole verses or even songs during live shows. He is actually a really good singer, after he left Metallica having the conflict with them he joined Voivod for few years and then started solo project where he not only plays bass but he is also the lead vocalist. The idea for The Unforgiven was to do the opposite of a normal rock ballad where you have the soft verse & heavier chorus like their songs One or Sanitarium, so you have the heavier verse "New blood joins this earth..." then the lighter chorus "What I've felt, what I've known..." I'd say it worked out well. It's interesting at least.

Once I saw Metallica rocking out in a warehouse on the One music video I just assumed every song was played and recorded in that same spot at that same warehouse. It’s science.

I guess I understand why people may not enjoy this album as their previous ones as it goes more into rock but to me, this is still my favorite Metallica Album and and my second favorite album of all time. A pretty sizable percentage of my favorite songs come from this album and was definitely the album that stuck with me since I was a kid listening to the songs on the radio.

There's something so minimalistic and rocket science-y about this album 👌🏼 like a 12 course meal

“Wherever I may roam” is one of their most underrated songs of their catalog, IMHO

I'd like to see you do two more MetallicA albums, but that's about it. This particular album was my first introduction to heavy metal.

An album that belongs in the pantheon of classic rock albums…Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side Of The Moon,” AC/DC’s “Back In Black,” Led Zeppelin IV, Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid,” Deep Purple’s “Machine Head.” A piece of rock history.

This album is a controversial one among Metallica fans. Some dislike it, some hail it as their last great record, I think both sides are wrong but both sides have shades of truth in their arguments. One thing that always amused me; in "The God That Failed," in the ending verse line "Decide just what you believe" - James Hetfield enunciates it in such a way it sounds like "Decide, Josh, what you believe" and that being my name, it always sorta struck as a "say what?" kind of moment.

So yes, You definitely need to continue on with the rest of their discography. What you have before you is two albums that were written and recorded at the same time. You have so many styles of music put into these albums. They are very experimental on these albums so don’t expect anything you’ve heard from the last 5.

Great album. Ride The Lightning will probably always be my favorite from Metallica but this album is great. I think there are some good deep cuts on here too like Holier Than Thou and Of Wolf And Man.

Something nobody ever talks about is the track layout. To me it seems thought out and on purpose. 3 songs of heaviness, then a soft track. Then, another 3 of heaviness and another soft track. Then, yet another 3 songs of heaviness ending with the fastest, most in your face, aggressive track in the album. Like you said...going out with a bang.

That's Lars. Nothing happens in Metallica without his input and deliberation - absolutely no way the running order was thrown together on a whim.

Love your reactions and breakdowns. The next few albums take a bit of a turn towards heavy alternatives, some even say a bit country. Personally I feel more blusy, but will be Interesting to see your take! Happy new year, keep em coming!

Interesting to hear your thoughts on this album and how it is different from the previous releases. The album reminds me of a particular group of friends i had at the time it came out. A couple of us got cassette copies on release and despite initial reservations grew to love this album. However it is not something i would listen to now and watching this video confirmed why.

the second track 'Sad But True' is tuned a whole tone lower from 'E' standard to 'D'. that's why it seems extra sludgy😉
