Dave Mustaine and Chris Poland, my favorite mega guitar duo, I really like what Marty Friedman did since Rust in Peace, but I think Chris Poland's vibe is wonderfully unique. Next one must be "Countdown to extinction", their 5th album from 1992, same line-up from "Rust in Peace".

This is my all-time favorite Thrash Metal album. The Drummer Gar Samuelson(RIP) & Guitarist Chris Poland came from a Jazz Fusion background, which gave Dave’s songs & Megadeth a completely unique feeling to other Thrash metal bands. ie. If you listen to the drum track isolated, you can still here the entire song in what the drums are doing, there’s also a subtle “swing” to his playing which gave the music so much feel in comparison to the overly Quantized feel from other metal bands.

The problem with Pantera is deciding which album to start with. Their first few albums in the 80's until Phil Anselmo became the singer is a total different sound & not as good as their 90's stuff. Also their first album with Phil Anselmo called Power Metal isn't the sound that made Pantera famous in the 90's. The album that put Pantera on the map and the sound that they stick with is Cowboys from Hell(1990) Anselmo's 2nd album with the band . Cowboys from Hell is probably where you should start to get into the band and then listen to Power Metal to see how different their sound changed. Their 80's stuff you should only listen to if you become a hardcore Pantera fan probably off reaction.

I swear you have to consider every Megadeth albums as a(n at least partial) reaction to the Metallica album before it. Dave going "I can do that faster, more technical etc." and both bands worked out great for metal as a whole. + "So far, so good, so what" makes sense as the next Megadeth - they were on an epic run from Peace Sells to R.I.P.

Amazing album. That difference you said about the guitars, sometimes "in your face" and sometimes "clear and define" is the difference between Dave Mustaine and Chris Poland, the 2nd one was really into the jazz, that's why he sounds very unique for the genre. Agree in Bad Omen election. It has a really great groove on first and then the classic speediness, always with awesome riffs. Your next Megadeth record would be "Youthanasia" from 1994, really different from the Megadeth what you've heard. Actually is not a thrash album. It's kind of 90's metal, definetely softer, but still really good.
@mollyesanborn
@mollyesanborn Жыл бұрын
Oh, that's really cool about the guitars! I love how their different playing styles kinda bounce off of each other, they balance each other out in a way. It creates a really cool effect with the sound on this album. And I'll certainly have to give Youthanasia a listen as well, I can't imagine Megadeth not sounding like thrash metal so you've got me very intrigued to hear it.
@Felipe_dcj

@@mollyesanborn Also Mustaine was pure anger on that era. On Rust in Peace he was a bit more sober so he could improve his sound, that's why on RIP there's less difference between him and Marty who was/is as unique as Poland. On reference to Youthanasia, Megadeth changed its style on Countdown to Extintion (less thrash) but for me 94 record is better as a whole.

This album have little times blues in 80s vibe, each song was a new lesson for thrash genre at these times because the way of instrumental intros and change of structures, even in shorter songs. Peace sells song hits hard, is an hymn/resume about all what thrash genre is about. Devil's island hits different, like a standard 80s hard rock hard party single. Can't wait for countdown to extinction.

In 2004, Dave Mustaine had all the Megadeth albums remastered. In my opinion, the snare drum on some of the remasters had too much treble. Peace Sells, though, came out immaculate in my opinion. It wasn't just the snare, though. All the instruments sound great. It's a huge improvement over the original. Its probably one of the most "pleasant" sounding metal albums to listen to, for lack of a better word.
@Krispybuttz

Gotta disagree with ya. Nothing beats the originals. Especially rust in peace. The drums and vocals were so much worse on the remaster. Thankfully Apple Music has all the versions of the albums so we can enjoy! Either way it’s megadeth so can’t go wrong 😎
@NinjaRunningWild
@NinjaRunningWild Жыл бұрын
@@KrispybuttzWell, the studio lost some of Dave's vocal tracks & some musician recorded over Dave's guitar on certain tracks. Meaning, Dave had to re-record parts of the album (EG - Vocals on Take No Prisoners); so, basically RiP is not so much a remaster as a re-recording. IE - Agree, the originals are MUCH better.

This album really captures what Megadeth was like in their raw early days. Gives it such a unique feel is the contributions of co-guitarist Chris Poland and drummer Gary “Gar” Samuelson. The two came from jazz backgrounds, which brought the strong swing feel on the first two albums. The two had played together in earlier projects, and were essentially a package deal. Dave Mustaine would sometimes describe their sound as a “jazz-oriented punk band with some classical influences”. He’d say that to mess with people, but there was a degree of truth to it. Poland’s playing is renowned for his dexterity and jazz nuances (his lead parts have that “clear” tone you described). The partnership would not last, as Dave Mustain would fire them when their heroin addictions got out of hand. Gar’s playing ability was declining, and Chris had begun stealing and pawning band gear to “get well”. Both would bounce around other bands and genres thereafter. Gar Samuelson died in 1999, reportedly of liver failure. Chris Poland has been periodically involved with Megadeth since, but has mostly stuck to the jazz fusion genre ever since.

There were 2 lineup changes from Peace Sells to Rust in piece and thats a big part of the sonic difference. Marty Friedman on kead guitar who has a very specific and recognizable sound. He uses a lot of a-typical scales like melodic minor, phyrgian dominante along with more commonly used harmonic minor but they all have a large interval in them which gives a very recognizable sound. While this albums lead guitarist Chris Poland was more of a fusion player. The 2nd cha ge was drummer Nick Menza who was a real metal drum master that was really stong with the double bass peddle. He replaced Gar Samualson who had a strong jazz backround.

Hello Molly, I enjoy your video, Megadeth, you can try their first album "Killing is My Business" which is 1Metal with the essence of Punk, with the same song structure as of RIP and Peace Sells, or "Youthanasia" which is Metal with the essence of Grunge, slower speed in songs with a more commercial approach, lots of harmonies, with simple song structure. I remember when I bought Youthanasia I instantly really like it, cause I was really into grunge at the time, and although the rock was heavier, it was up my alley. Now "Killing is My Business...and Business Is Good" when i bought it (original version)and listened to it, I was like, Meh, it's too raw, nothing catches you right away, but, it's one of those albums that grows on you, and when it does, you will forever like it.

Also, Dave's guitar tone is different than Chris' guitar tone. Once you have listed to the first two albums a few times, you can pick out who is soloing where by their tone. Dave's tone sounds basically like he uses the Bridge pick up on everything. It has an 'in your face' quality. Chris' tone sounds more like he uses the Neck pick up. Its thicker and warmer. If you don't play guitar, it's crazy to think you can get such different sounds by simply placing one pickup a few inches further away from the bridge. Now, I could be wrong because I have never actually read anything on their guitar setups during the recording of the first two albums, but I have heard similar tones on my own guitars.

The layers of guitars are the guitarists "dueling" for many of the solo sections, trading off with each other, back and forth. It really builds tension and is awesome when you have two killer guitarists. I Ain't Superstitious is an old Blues song written by Willie Dixon and had been covered by a lot of people. My Last Words is probably my favorite Megadeth song. Guitarist Chris Poland and drummer Gar Samuelson where actually Jazz musicians and not really familiar with the Thrash genre. Dave got them onboard though and it really fit. Sadly, they were all a bunch of drug addicts and the band imploded. I saw them on this tour at the Trocadero in Philadelphia. Dave Mustaine and Gar where mad at each other and where giving each other shit all through the set. At the end, Dave threw his guitar into Gar's drum set after whacking them with it for a couple blows. Gar grabbed the guitar and tossed it back out. It did this nice swan dive, headstock first, onto the the stage where it broke and tuning pegs flew off. A week or two later the band split up. Do Killing is My Business.

Peace Sells Rain in Blood Master of Puppets Among the Living These are my trapped on an island albums and every one is perfect from beginning to end. All four bands would go on to produce more refined albums for their next efforts, with more complexity and polish, but these albums perfectly distill their unique styles that made them stand out. In the first two albums, Dave used more of a snarl in his vocals. By the third album, his singing started to change with less snarl and more singing. His vocal deliver is different in 'Rust in Peace' than "Killing is my Business' and "Peace Sells...'. Those odd vocals are from him layering his vocals. A lot of reverb added at times as well. For many Megadeth fans, the first two albums you have listened to, 'RiP' and "Peace Sells...' top there favorites list. Personally I love the first album, 'Killing Is My Business' slight more that 'Rust...' 'RiP' is definitely more polished, but the raw energy of "Killing...' kills it. But you should listen to 'Countdown to Extinction' next. 'Countdown...' was the next evolutionary step in Megadeth as a band. You have listed to 'Rust in Peace', Megadeth's technically best played Thrash album. And you have listened to 'Peace Sells,' their darkest album. 'Countdown...' will lead you into the more radio friend era.

Kurt Cobain of Nirvana was hugely supportive of them and even finished TAD's set in Milan after he mis-timed his high and passed out on stage. I would say that TAD was the most innovative band of the Seattle Scene. And they had the best bass player - Kurt Danielson. Also, Sub-Pop is very cool with copyrights.

10:10 yeah dave had the first 2 solos on this song and chris has this one . No altering any audio just 2 lead gutarists havinh dif styles and sounds . The other guitarist in megadeth no matter who and when will always be cleaner . Dave plans it that way . i think daves solos are cooler though . the conjuring and my last words solos are my fav on record and those are both dave

I would listen to Megadeths first album, Killing is my business... I personally love it, so fast and i love his vocals on that album I would really love for you to react to My Chemical Romance- The Black Parade! my personal favourite of MCR is Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge and i would also love for you to react to that but TBP is regarded as their best.

Hmm, I find it by far the weakest track (discounting the cover). Goes to show how amazing the album is when even the lowest ranked song is still amazing

Peace Sells is in my opinion Megadeth's angriest, most unhinged album aside from maybe Killing Is My Business (also worth checking out). Dave was so full of rage and was able to bring every bit of it out on this album in the music, lyrics, and performances. His snarling and screaming and distorted anger just impart a feeling of hate to the album. It's awesome.

Speaking of classic metal albums, I think it's high time that you listened and reacted to some Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne albums! (Black Sabbath's self-titled debut, Paranoid, Masters of Reality, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, as well as Ozzy's Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman, Bark at the Moon, No More Tears, and Ozzmosis, are all must listens!)

This was the sound of Megadeth hopped up on drugs (coke, heroin, dope, speed, etc.) Both Chris Poland (guitar) and (the late) Gar Samuelson (drums) were heroin junkies, despite being great musicians... Both were fired after this record in 1987, because they were hawking their equipment for drug money. Gar Samuelson was reportedly in bad shape even back then... he died in 1999 from liver cirrhosis. Dave Mustaine was the key songwriter and the 'Peace sells' album was his vision... he also co-produced the record. David Ellefson (bass) was also heavily featured... Metallica did not really feature their bassist prominently on their records, and that was a major difference between them and Megadeth. It was no secret that Dave Mustaine was a driven, maniacal frontman of Megadeth... his drug abuse was legendary. He put Megadeth together in late 1983 and finalized the line-up in 1984 w/ Ellefson, Samuelson and Poland... Indie label Combat Records signed Megadeth quickly and the debut album 'Killing is my business' was recorded and released in 1985... It was a raw, under-produced album, but showed immense promise. However, the label lost the cover art and had to use a substitute... Dave Mustaine was furious and refused to deliver another record to Combat. The label sold the contract to a major label Capitol Records and the "Peace sells, but who's buyin'?" had a better budget than 'Killing is my business' and sounded superior in quality... Megadeth also filmed 2 music videos that made it on MTV in 1986... 'Wake up dead'... and 'Peace sells'... and the album sold a half million copies as Megadeth opened for Alice Cooper on tour in '86. Each subsequent Megadeth album until 1992 would outsell the previous record. Years later, Mustaine and Ellefson revealed that Megadeth were still destitute by 1990 because they had blown all their earnings on drugs... rehab and lawyers fees... Ellefson said, "We're 4 albums into Megadeth's career and I haven't got a dime to my name..." Thankfully, the band was able to clean up a bit by 1992 and earned their fortune w/ the 5th album 'Countdown to extinction'... But each Megadeth album was sonically different each time... None sounded alike. The most commercial Megadeth records were - 'Youthanasia' (1994)... 'Cryptic writings' (1997) and 'Risk' (1999)

Wow, I thought it was just gonna be the song and here I was wishing you'd do some others (I think the title track is the weakest in the album, minus the cover song). What a treat to relisten to the entire Peace Sells album with someone's fresh perspective. As you can see by my picture, this is my favorite Megadeth album and Good Mourning/Black Friday my fav song. Edit: Woah your fav was Bad Omen? I've always found it super underrated, barely anyone talks about it. It's probably my 2nd fav

You should jump straight to their latest album.. See how 30 years has grown on the bands music.. Hint.. Megadeth didnt obtain god status off just just their first albums.. They got it from consistent high quality releases.. With a few little hiccups along the 40 year road.
