a lot of the "electronic" parts are actually guitar, the guitarist Mike Einziger is a fantastic guitarist and used a ring modulator pedal called a "gonkulator" to make a lot of those sounds, because of him that pedal gained a cult following and are very sought after. This era of Incubus with Dirk Lance on bass and DJ Lyfe on turntables is my favorite lineup of the band, really leaning into funk and experimentation, they really calmed down and became less... interesting later on.

Incubus started off as a Nu-Metal era version of Faith No More on Fungus Amongus and Science, on their third album Make Yourself they went in a softer direction, they still had a couple of Nu-Metal era type songs on Make Yourself but they also had other songs that were much more softer and conventional, akin to Alternative Rock/Post Grunge sounding. By Incubus’s 4th album Morning View they went full on conventional/Radio soft Rock, then on their 5th album A Crow Left Of The Murder, they went back to being experimental but in a different way. Then by their 6th album Light Grenades they went back to that Alternative Rock/Post Grunge sound. After Light Grenades that was when people started to lose interest in Incubus, they put out a few more albums after Light Grenades but it was mostly big fans of Incubus that paid attention to those more recent albums. So they are a band that have changed sounds a fair bit over the years, from being experimental to conventional back to experimental again and then back to conventional.again.

Great reaction! I was so glad to see this video pop up on my feed. I believe Incubus made some of the greatest music of the late 90's and early to mid 2000's. I could go on and on about why they are my favorite band, but the other comments on here pretty much sum up why. My favorite thing about Incubus is that while they were nu metal OG's, touring with KoRn and Deftones, they're known for their POSITIVE and occasionally funny lyrics. The self love and positive messages on 'Make Yourself' (next album) were really unique during the raprock era.

Calgone is a play on Calgon bubble bath. In the 1980s there was a commercial that became a meme where a stressed lady says "Calgon, take me away!" And then the bubble bath becomes a tropical paradise or something. Also, they're from Calabasas, California so 'Cal' may be deeper as well.

I remember the first time I'd ever heard Incubus in around '98. Was up late after a night out with mates and turned the TV onto the ABC to listen to RAGE (Australian early morning alternative tunes). The second song on was Certain Shade of Green and I loved it. Next day I was out to the shops to get the Album, then sat back in my room and had my mind blown. As much as I'd already heard bands like Korn, Deftones, RATM and TOOL, I'd never heard anything like it. The lead track really sums up what that album was for me.

Yessss! I’ve been waiting for this one! My absolute favorite band ever. I hope you’ll go through all their albums. The first album that you skipped isn’t a bad one to skip if you can’t hit them all. The band largely disregards it as it was still them really copying their influences. It’s a funk metal record through and through but still worth a listen if you want! SCIENCE is by far the heaviest and most bizarre of their albums, but the songwriting improves on the albums after this and they touch on so many genres. My absolute favorite of theirs is A Crow Left of the Murder. I love them all though - even the recent ones that old school fans tend to complain about. Thanks for checking them out!!

Yea this is actually by far my favorite album of theirs. Well... not far behind is Morning View, but I believe this album as absolutely underrated even by their fanbase. I am a musician and all the musician friends I ever made all agree that this album was a really sneaky peak moment for them. It's kind of hard to not think bands just get better and better or whatever is closer to your favorite album is better... but this album is a totally golden peak moment in their discography. Its so fucking good dude. It definitely has nu metal elements but there is a lot more to it that is absolutely everlasting.

12:27 if I'm remembering correctly they shout of Mr. Bungle, Primus, and Red Hot Chili Peppers in the linear notes of their first album. omg tysm for mentioning Shudder To Think!! Especially knowing that Incubus and Deftones referenced one of their songs live and both of them are style-bending bands, it's like a hidden influence/connection that makes sense once you know them. They're one of the coolest discoveries I made recently, and PXR is like Trout Mask Replica of post-hardcore, but also extremely good (sorry for the bold opinion).

Funk, jazz, techno, metal, hip hop... all in one place! I remember the first time I listened to this album. It didn't click with me, but the hook that made me come back to it were the merge of weird space sounds (as i remember calling them atm) and the easy to follow rythms. After that I couldn't stop listening to it cause it got better with each listen. Discovering new sound and styles became a great task for me and I still find some new ones in it. How each member bring something to the table is remarkable for me. I like the production in general and how lound the turntables are, in fact, this is the only full lengh album that features dj lyfe. A lot of the dj samples you hear come from a children's book. Looking forward for you to listen to their other material. Each album it's different!

A musical masterpiece crossing multiple genres in often the same song let alone throughout the whole album! Every project by Incubus has a different sound. Also the reason why Segue 1 at the end sounded like a muffled quality was they were replicating the 90s East Coast Hip Hop production sound which is heavy on the lofi EQ with often a low end filter. Plus having a DJ in the band - he fuses the combination of turntablism with the scratches and sampling for the sound layering beautifully. Great analysis 👍🏻

I listened to a few of their other albums before this one. SCIENCE is when they really started changing into a more mainstream, polished nu metal band. Much different than Fungus Amongus. You can hear the RHCP influences on their early work. I gave this CD to my brother in law who kept in his work vehicle CD player for months. That's all he listened to haha. Energetic is definitely the word to describe this. They got more melodic later on, but this one was just a get up and go album. Incubus is one of my favorite bands. Science is definitely my favorite album by them. They never did another quite like this but I definitely love each of the next 3 albums and there's a couple good ones after that. Guitarist Mike Einzinger has always been an influence. He always uses really interesting chord voicings and has a legendary pedalboard. He's the reason I bought the Boss Super Phaser. Incubus was never as heavy as Science going forward. Some people would use the term sell out. Don't think that's fair. They made some classic alternative rock songs.

Nu metal bands were often were accused of having extraneous DJs that were there just because it was trendy at the time. SCIENCE era Incubus were definitely not one of those bands; the DJ was completely integral to the entire sound of this album. This is definitely one of the most fun albums from that era, and a lot of it was because of the turntables!

Definitely their album that got them out there, but Make Yourself was the breakout album! Love that album! Morning View is noteworthy, but I would have to say I think I like A Crow Left of the Murder more. Excited you are reviewing these guys, another favorite band of mine. Should definitely listen to their 3 tracks they made for the stealth soundtrack. If you do not review those you should at least listen to them, great songs!

little known album history.. the tail end of the album is the tale of a drug (psychedelic) fueled date gone wrong. starting with favorite things our protagonist is having an argument with his girl about his drug use which he manages to convince her to join him, perhaps in the hopes it would fix things.. leading into summer romance which is when they consume the psychedelics under the night sky and though this part of their night is going well cracks start forming, as told by the increasing amounts of "errors" in a pristinely technical funk guitar track throughout the song. next we lead into nebula where the trip begins to move into a full peak and our lovers get separated as reality gets mashed to high hell. Deep inside leads us to the trip starting to go bad and the protagonist of the tale turning inwards as self doubt and self reflection take over, finishing up with the batshit insanity of calgone (take me away) where the protag is so tired of the experience he wants to just end the day and wake up in his bed, forgetting that the whole thing started with him wanting this experience as one of his favorite things, to be experienced along with his girl. because the album came out before there were any real kind of internet discussion groups or dissectionals the way there are now, it was never really made a big thing, but the way it's written deserves attention to this day. SCIENCE is still one of the best complete albums ever written imho, and its themes and storytelling are relatively timeless. that it hid a 5 part story plain as day that most people never realized for 20+ years while being an extremely popular album is a testament to the albums ability to draw you in with crazy good tunes, and make you think outside the idiot box.

@@OH_MY_DOGGG hehe the beginning is actually one person saying "I love them beans" (aka shrooms if you subscribe to the drug tale theory) and the girl saying "smells like cheese" ..

I remember seeing these guys open for Limp Bizkit back in a small show in Birmingham, Alabama, and holy shit were they awesome! Me and a friend didn't even know who they were, but when their set was done, I remember we looked at each other and were like "Damn, that was worth the ticket price by itself!" xD Redefine and Anti Gravity Love Song were my personal faves.

Yes!! Made my morning. This is a killer album with great work from everyone involved. Dirk Lance is an amazing bassist, and Boyd's vocals are top notch. You can get a little bit more of this era of their music by checking out their Enjoy Incubus EP. Only about 5 songs or so, but they're all just as good. You can hear a little bit of FNM influence in the instrumentation and a lot of Patton influence in Boyd's vocals. They do it well

Yet again giving me a new appreciation for an album, but this time it’s one I’ve only known about for a relatively short time. A lot of standout tracks on here. Love Glass. I will say there’s nothing quite like the first time you hear Seque 1. It’s a ride.

Don’t know if others mentioned this in the comments, but track 12 is pronounced Cal (as in California) gone. There used to be - maybe still is - a brand of bubble-bath liquid called Calgon, with the commercial always having the lady say “Calgon, take me away…”. Right before his admission that he’s responsible for the bad things that happened, he says “thank goodness… for bathtubs… and suds”. And then the double meaning of “take me away” in a song where he was abducted by aliens Love the song, and always enjoy your reactions - it’s a fun journey to follow

Almost all the parts you commented on being "electronic" are actually the guitarist Mike Einziger using a guitar called the "Gonkulator FX13" which is a ring modulator with the frequency set at 550hz and a DOD Grunge distortion! Ring modulation is very common on a lot of synths so it sounds very electronic
