This album brings me back to the early 2000’s. As someone that enjoys a mix between catchy, heavy, melodic and progressive, this album was to my liking. My band at the time covered 2 songs off of this album & we briefly invited a DJ to play with us. Although less with me as an individual, Incubus definitely influenced the musicians I used to collab with.

I always find myself listening to it when I have a lot of housework to get done. It just gives me a great energy and creates a really positive atmosphere. I also think this album has one of the best closing tracks of any album. It's definitely up there in my top 5 as far as brilliant closers go. Right up there with the likes of Farewell and Goodnight by The Smashing Pumpkins (Mellon Collie) and The Tourist by Radiohead (OK Computer).

Morning View was my first introduction to Incubus, being born in early 2001, and this coming out later in the year, so it's very much been with me throughout my life. I never really picked up on the water theme throughout the album, but it made so much sense when you brought it up. Two answers to two comments you had; the effect with the guitar kind of "circling" is caused by the Boss PH-2 Super Phaser, used consanly by Mike Einziger (the guitarist) throughout Incubus' albums. If you'd like to discover more about his techniques, Nick Fitzgerald is an amazing guy who does incredible Incubus covers and in depth tutorials on KZbin. Lastly, that guitar he used on Aqueous Transmission is a pipa that was gifted to him from Steve Vai. Been enjoying the reactions, loving the reactions and the descriptiveness on how you feel about the songs. Keep it up with the amazing work!

Yeah we're getting into the good stuff now! How's this for a smooth listen, yeah Molly? I'm very, very excited for when you get to the next one; "A Crow Left of the Murder." That one's my favorite from the band, though I'm still a fan to this day. This album takes me back though for sure to the college days. I have to forewarn you about the next record though; "Crow" is a very subliminal album. What I mean by that is, there's a lot, and I mean a LOT of these hidden parts and effects and stuff you likely won't catch on the first listen, and even me with trained ears, caught things I hadn't heard before on that album, later on. As in, two years later on. Given that they wrote "Crow" in like , so they say anyway, two weeks; it makes me wonder "how do they do this stuff?" It's all so brilliant.

Hey Molly, great review! This is probably ties with SCIENCE for my favourite Incubus album, also probably their most accessible. It's pretty gratitfying to see the number of smiles this band generates. For me, Incubus was one of the more interesting and innovative bands of the early 2000s. "How does it feel like you're in outer space and underwater at the same time?" This was also my experience. Incubus had/has some absolutely amazing studio crew for every single album they put out. Incubus is like a modern-day funk-metal Pink Floyd; they made such excellent use of sound and studio, and musically did things that no one else was doing at the time (and still aren't).

My first and only trip to the USA was back in June 2016. Flew in to LA and hired a red convertible Mustang. Drove up the Pacific coast up to San Francisco. I also detoured into the hills and the one thing I had planned whilst driving at the sunset was to play Morning View from start to finish as I did. As soon as I listened to this album, I knew I had to do this and it was everything I imagined and more. I just find the album so connected to where it was conceived and made and there's no other piece of music I know that connects with a mood and location like this masterpiece. I then followed it up with Make Yourself, an equally brilliant album. Memories I know I'll take with me when I pass from this earth! Thank you Incubus.

Fun fact: The original video for Wish You Were Here had to be completely altered, because a portion of it showed the band jumping off a bridge to escape a mob of ravenous fans, but considering the social climate in the US immediately following 9/11, those parts of the video were cut, in favor of glamour shots of the band playing among satiny white sheets.

I think S.C.I.E.N.C.E will always be my personal favorite Incubus album but this one is their best one objectively. You can really hear how they were a more "mature" band in terms of how they structured and implemented textures into their music. It definitely feels in flow with the front cover and always gives me this feeling of hope and joy. It always takes me back to those early 2000's. The way it was conceived adds a lot the final work too. Speaking of the guitar tone, Mike is playing the whole album on the neck pickup of his guitar, which being further away from the bridge gives you a more bassy, rounded, fuzzy sound with distortion, thats the key to this overall sound, very unique. It is really common to play with a distorted tone on the bridge pickup (you can hear that on their previous albums) to play rythm guitars but again, not the case here. Make Yourself, this work and their next 2 albums after Morning view are a must if you like alternative rock.

This album was re-imagined and re-recorded by the band in 2023 and was let out into the wild recently. You should definitely check it out once you are familiar with the album. It now has a grace and maturity granted by the 23 year gap between releases and the changes are noticeable enough, whilst not damaging, to make it something new. Quite often the concept of recording an album again many years later fails to add anything but I really think that Incubus nailed it with this one, it is equally as good & stands as strong as the original.

Morning View was my last Incubus album that I bought when it came out. Starting with the following release, I kind of got away from them because I was getting into much heavier music, and so I didn't revisit them until Light Grenades. As for Morning View, I enjoyed how some of the songs were kind of reminiscent of Make Yourself, but also played to the future direction that the band would end up taking. That signature sound, Molly, that toy mention in Blood On The Ground, lies less in his tunings but more in the tones and effects he choose. What you're hearing specificially there in that song is an effect called a flanger, which tuned to a really shallow wave and a slow repeat cycle that gives it this massive swirling quality. He also plays distortion using the neck position pickup on the guitar, which gives it a warmer, bassier, but fuzzier tone. Sounds so lush. Oh and the instrument in Aqueous Transmission is a Chinese instrument called a Pipa.

Thank you so much for the info, I appreciate it! That flanger effect is so cool, such a unique sound that really adds that special 'Incubus touch' to their music.

Thanks for doing this, I appreciate your imput and Im glad that I saw this when I did. I immediately thought to myself, "I can't wait to see if she's done Make Yourself and what she thinks of that one." Now I have to go check that video out. I love this album. It means alot to me and brings me right back to a place in time when it was first released, but Make Yourself is what got me into them and my favorite by them. Make Yourself reminds me of Senior year in high school and Morning View reminds me of later in the year when I started going to Umass Amherst.

Thanks so much for watching! I've really loved all three Incubus albums that I've heard so far, I honestly can't pick a favorite at the moment. They're such a talented band and really have crafted a beautiful sound for themselves, and I look forward to hearing more music from them.

Aqueous Transmission has become a weekly ritual for me at this point. Very therapeutic and reflective. And I have no idea what that stringed instrument is either. Something eastern I'd figure but I'll have to look into it.

Such a beautiful track, the sound is so lush and it really brings the album to a close in the best way. Someone else mentioned in the comments that it's a pipa, and their lead guitarist Mike Einziger is the person playing it. I love the sound of it!

I know I’ve mentioned them before a while ago but you should react to the discography of the Scottish alternative rock band Biffy Clyro. They’ve reinvented their sound a few times throughout their career and no album sounds exactly like any other in their catalogue

Definitely their jazziest composed album especially compared to their earlier funkier stuff. Love Morning View! I still consider Dirk leaving the band after this the greatest tragedy of music!! He took all the groove with him!!!
@mollyesanborn7 ай бұрын
Yeah, pretty different from the experimental craziness of S.C.I.E.N.C.E, Incubus really matured their sound and added so much warmth and lushness to Morning View. I love both sides to their musical style. I'll have to see if I notice a difference with their later albums without Dirk on bass.

a good one Molly. I didn't get into Incubus until years after this album. i know there's a lot of Incubus fans that feel like they sold out or whatever but you know, not every band or person can stay 19 and rebellious their whole lives. people get older and feel differently and it comes out in the music.
@mollyesanborn7 ай бұрын
Absolutely, bands change and evolve their sound over time and this was such a great addition to their discography. Incubus achieved such a mature sound on this record, a blend of everything that they do so well, and amazing production as well!

After listening to this album, I'm curious how you would hear the rerecorded XXIII anniversary album they just released. I think it doesn't hit as hard as the original. Boyd's vocal richness I felt is what made the original. After his recent surgery, the changes in his voice make it sound like a step back in some ways. It's overall an interesting revisit, but I thought they pulled off their original effort better overall, as it feels so much more raw. You can still tell they're passionate about these songs, but there's a little more to be desired from a rerecord. Not enough changed to justify it, IMO. Glad to see this is your first listen! I was in high school and downloading this album 3 months before it came out on KaZaa. Those were the times! Haha Now I own 3 different versions of this album. Incubus is my all time favorite band. They can pretty much do no wrong. It's always interesting what they are doing. Can't wait til you get to later albums!
