its called the Leidenfrost effect. your skin is warm enough that it makes the LN2 turns to gas before it hits your skin, creating a barrier of gas preventing your hand from freezing.

You don't dip your hands into LN2 and leave them there because your hands will cool down enough for the Leidenfrost effect to wear off and then freeze your hand. You need a big temperature differential for it to stay in place.

You really don't want to put your hand in LN2 for more than a couple seconds. It gets frosty quick. Quickly pulling a Gatorade from the bottom of a 5 gal water cooler full of nitrogen is about as far as I'd personally go. Same goes for liquid oxygen, btw.

The reason why pouring nitrogen on yourself is safer than wearing fabric and holding nitrogen is because of "Leidenfrost effect". Essentially the basics is that because the temperature of a liquid is so low compared to your skin temperature, the liquid will form a vapor-like surface between you and itself to keep from boiling rapidly. This is why when you heat a pan on a high temperature then pour water, the water will slide instead of Boil immediately. When you wear fabric or somethign that can absorb the cold substance, it will burn you since it has nowhere to escape except to go through you.

The reason it's safer to have bare skin over gloves is because of the Leidenfrost effect. The liquid nitrogen boils on your skin creating a small barrier which stops the rest of the nitrogen from touching the surface. Gloves are an insulator so there's not as much heat boiling the nitrogen. it'll freeze quickly but slower than direct contact therefore, paradoxical freezing your hand quicker :)

Since Vince didn't give you a great explanation as to why gloves aren't a good idea to wear, I thought I'd have a crack with my limited knowledge of chemistry. What protects your hands when you pour liquid N2 over them is the Leidenfrost effect. Basically what happens is when there is a significant delta between the liquid and the surface it is coming into contact with, the liquid instantly vaporizes and forces away the rest of the liquid as the new formed gas expands. The danger with wearing gloves is when the density (in terms of molecules per volume) is less than that of your skin. The solid surface then loses that significant difference in temperature much quicker and then loses the Leidenfrost effect. This allows the liquid to directly contact the solid material resulting in accelerated cooling, which is further worsened if the material were to be porous (allowing the N2 to soak into it).

I just assumed that it caused it to remain in contact with the skin longer (by acting like a barrier between the N2 and the outside air) allowing a larger amount of heat to be leached away from the skin surface. Either way, there's a reason why there's a difference between safety-gear and proper-safety-gear. This is one of those cases where having the incorrect safety-gear can make things worse.

Its the Lidenfrost Effect: Your skin is warm enough to boil the LN2 faster than it can stick, creating a vapor barrier between your skin and the liquid. A cloth like a glove would allow the LN2 to soak in and freeze, putting all of that cold right onto you with no barrier.

While not literally correct, it's figuratively accurate. As temperatures go down, electrons slow down and electricity "flows" more slowly. It's not actually frozen, but for a six word explanation to someone who isn't Gordon Freeman, it's all you need to hear.

Krytern UK yep, but don't think they have a solid, liquid and gassous, they're not an element. If with "frozen" Jay meant a state of low mobility, the phrase have sense: current is moving electrons, obviously they don't like to be "slowed down"(?)

Btw, the reason why LN2 just boils off your bare skin is because of the Leidenfrost effect. When the temperature difference between a liquid and a surface is very high, it'll boil so fast, the vapour acts as an insulator and separates the surface from the liquid. tldr, the LN2 is boiling so fast, it doesn't have time to freeze your skin. Gloves/fabric interferes with that, so the LN2 actually does get to freeze you.

So to get the ultimate speeds... you gotta constantly pour liquid nitrogen into it, you gotta wrap parts with hvac insulators and shop towels, and also heat up other parts with a blow torch ... all for an over clocking record

Yes, that would be the safest way. The heat from your body creates a barrier that makes the liquid nitrogen just roll off your skin. Its called the Leidenfrost effect. But if you held on to the liquid or it got stuck in your balls, you are done dude...

So what we need is a 'barebones' system that comes with some kind of device that pulls nitrogen out of the natural ambient air, condenses it into some kind of on-board thermos, and which has some kind of logic on board which would flow the condensed liquid nitrogen across the cores AS NEEDED for heat dissipation. It can re-charge its supply/thermos during the times when you're not playing games. Or maybe as an added feature, you could add liquid nitrogen canisters that self-seal when removed from the station. And have some kind of bleeder valve to re-fill your system with stored liquid nitrogen you have already pre-generated.

Somebody showcased a system with FOUR Kingpins recently! As for the Vaseline; when it dries, its properties work similar to a wax, which is why the liquid can't get to components. On a side note, I definitely don't recommend mime-drinking Liquid Nitrogen again in a video - there are some people out there who might try it for real and that's not great PR if they get hurt... In any case, congratulations - according to the site, you are still the top record holder.

14:24 the same thing with blacksmithing. My blacksmithing teacher prefers to not wear gloves because they give a false sense of security. They protect against hot air for a little while but if you accidentally grab a hot thing or if a hot speck jumps on to them and the gloves aren't real leather it will burn through to your skin.
Does what Thermal Paste you use, REALLY matter?
