Technically, following the actual rules of the game, that's not how the spell works. Since depression is a state of being and not a command. But there's also the rule that literally any rule in the game can be overruled by the dungeon master, so if your dungeon master is cool with it and thinks it's fun, then yeah, it works. Which is THE greatest part of DnD imo. Sure, there are rules, but we're all just here to have fun, so don't let the rules get in the way of that

@@MrSuperTeenGohan If someone did that at my table, I would probably just point out it needs to be an order and proppose "depress" instead of "depression". I think it's good for novice players to be pointed out when they missunderstand some rule to help them get used to both reading and understanding what the rules say instead of getting used to do things ignoring the rules, but I also think it's even better to help them find the way to do what they want (or at least the closest thing to what they want) following the rules instead of just saying "no, this isn't how this works so it doesn't work". Either way is fine, if I wasn't DMing I would probably let it be since it isn't game breaking in any significant way, but I prefer to leave the "any rule can be overruled" thing for situations where the rules are unclear, when they are causing an argument or when someone tries to use a spell or skill for something that makes sense even though it's not specified in the rules of said spell or skill.

@@garethvila5108 I would personally also not really let it work this way in my own campaign, but I also recognise that I tend to be a party pooper with rules, so I try to be more lenient as long as it's enhancing the experience at the table and not breaking the game. In a campaign I wouldn't allow it, because it sets precedens for further into the campaign, but in a one-shot I'd point out that it's not how the spell would properly, but go with it because it's just a one-shot. As for turning depression into a command, I think I'd look for a better word than "depress", since that doesn't really (in my opinion) translate to "become depressed". It can just as easily be "cause depression". I'd probably go with the command "despair", as that (in my opinion) achieves a similar state, and is an action that inheritly must affect oneself. As for anyone else reading this, who thinks I'm taking the fun out of it by being technical and specific about this: this is part of what I personally find fun, and I only indulge because it seems people are willing to discuss the technicality. I still believe that the way to have fun is different from table to table

Fun fact my first session of dnd my character (a half elf if i remember correctly) just had a feeling from perception that people were watching us while we were in the woods, so i used a flaming arrow and shot the trees around us, and killed like all 8 or so vigilantes that were definitely going to attack us, everyone was actually really impressed cause as mentioned this was my first run, in fact our groups bard asked me if he could write a song for it, i said sure, and next session he actually came back with a lyrics sheet and his guitar and played us the song, he actually let me keep the paper too, it's still tucked away with my character sheet if i remember correctly

PLUS there was that whole "Satanic Panic" going on where the Christians were losing their minds. (With the 80s it was D&D, with the 90s it was Pokemon, yknow. It's all supposedly demons & evolution and stuff). So it was a lot of people's dirty little secret to spend their afternoon as an elf. Yesterday I did my first round of DnD: First thing we did, we encountered a water elemental, and we adopted it. Then we had a custody battle over it, only for it to chose someone else, and then I got ambushed by skeletons and I dodged their attacks like I had ultra instinct, we fought a Slime Boss, we yeeted our water baby into it, it absorbed the slime, and became a big boy. Then at the end, I yeeted one of my party members in the ocean.

One of my favorite experiences was about a goat named Gertrude.. So my party and I were fighting some cursed scarecrows for a town outside of our city. We were using a goat as bait for the scarecrows and after, I decided it would be a great idea to feed this dark magical hay to this goat. Then she developed a psychic scream along with bright red pupils. It was amazing and she became my familiar and she would fight in battles with us. HOWEVER- last session it was discovered by our newest party member, Remus, that Gertrude was in fact possessed by a demon. Apparently, I opened a portal to the underworld of sorts and when I fed Gertrude the cursed hay. It came through and possessed my beloved goat. ALSO- apparently I UNKNOWINGLY signed a contract, the contents I do not know- but if I die before the contract is up he will take my soul and I will forever amuse him in the underworld. However- another plot twist. My in-game character, Faelyn, knows none of this because the demon inside Gertrude threatened Remus if he told anyone. So only Remus, the newest member, knows that my beloved goat is actually a demon who I signed some sort of contract with. THEN we stumble across a seerer who tells me BEWARE THE DARK ONE and ONLY YOU CAN SAVE THEM. Then he promptly passed out and we put him in an invisible cage until we were done with what we were doing.. That was our last session and now I will not no more until sometime next month. 😭 Update- her mouth is now an abyss and she drains life from those she bites… also she died… But we did a dark ritual with an itty bitty human sacrifice so she’s back 🙃

@grimrobot2059 technically it can't really do that because the spell she used was command. The spell only takes effect if the word can be used as a command like "HALT, STOP, GROVEL, RUN" and "depression" isn't really a command. But Charlie is a cool dm so he let it go because he's chill like that.
