I’ve been saying this for years!! I miss when WW2 games used to use real footage in games. It added so much to the atmosphere and dark-feeling of the game if that makes sense. COD1 used real footage very well.

The Japanese during WW2 absolutely used tactics like playing dead, having snipers in the trees, banzai charges, etc. The Pacific Theater would have been hell on earth. The enemy themselves were the epitome of fanatical and almost never surrendered, committed some of the most unspeakable atrocities in human history on enemy forces, POWs, and civilians alike (it’s almost unbelievable how evil some of the stuff was), and were experts at guerilla tactics. Then there was the environment. Heat in the triple digits (Farenheit), oppressive humidity, the storms that come with those conditions, many different tropical diseases, and a wide variety of wildlife (including crocodiles in some places). Fighting in the Pacific would have been unimaginably awful.

Of course some allied soldiers were inhumane, there's always war crimes at war (I'm canadian so we got our share). It would be like surrendering to an Orc in a fantasy game. That's the darkest and most gritty Cod ever made. And one of my favourites. I felt like I was watching WW2 documentarry instead of game, especially during cutscenes. And the music is brutal. Brutally awesome. This game has R rating not only for gore or language. The player has to be matured enough to understand and appreciate the history. That's the closest we will get to a war through a game probably. Unless Bo6 will deliver something more shocking (but I doubt).

Treyarch had to prove they had what it took after playing it extremely safe with Cod 3. The decision to focus on the most horrid theaters of WWII is inspired, and the games dedication to showing this authentically (if not completely accurately to history) is frankly amazing. The Japanese were brutal, fanatical, they would never surrender and even the wounded would try and detonate grenades and take Americans with them. The HBO mini series The Pacific showcases this part of the war as accurately as possible following real marines who served. The Eastern front is perhaps the most horrible place and time in all of human history. Soviet and Nazi war crimes listed out would stretch a mile long. It was a war of ideology fought between evil fascists and communists, neither of which can be called good.
@viggowiin
@viggowiin 3 ай бұрын
No wonder Reznov wants revenge considering the absolute brutalities that happened on the Eastern Front in World War 2. Stalingrad was one of the most brutal battles in history. Around 27 million Soviets died where aroud 19 million were civilian deaths that starved, were murdered or were just generally casulties of war. Belarus lost a quarter of its population where 600 villages with their entire population wera annihilated by the Axis occupation force. The SS was mainly responsible for this but the Wehrmact definetly wasn't clean either. They committed plenty of crimes aswell like starving Soviet prisoners of war, robbing civilian villages for food which left the villagers with very little food. Also the commessar order which was to execute political officers. Reznov is brutal but understandably so.

That's not really why Reznov wants revenge.
@peezyorpj

@@cp368productions2 That is exactly why he wanted revenge. The Germans murdered his people in cold blood including his father. On the Eastern Front, the Germans had more liberty in the way they could wage war. Resulting in their brutal methods of dealing with prisoners and civilians since the soviets didn’t recognize the rules of war the Allies had.

If you want a great movie about the attack of Pearl Harbour, i would recommend the movie "Tora! Tora! Tora!". The name of the movie is a real phrase the Japanese pilots who attacked the harbour used to signal to the Japanese high command they had successfully made it to the harbour, and they are beginning the attack. This was the first radio transmission they made since they took off so they could maintain radio silence.

So some historical background for each of these missions you play through. Mission 1: You play as the Marine Raiders, they’re like America’s version of the Royal Marines Commandos. The Operation that takes place is called the Makin Raid. The 2nd Marine Raider Battalion launched from LCRL (Rubber boats) from submarines through rough seas and high surf. The Marines were met with heavy resistance, encountering Japanese snipers and Banzai attacks. They successfully completed their mission of blowing up the Fuel and Ammo dump on the island, and evacuated. Unfortunately that surf was still heavy and 11 out of the 18 boats made it back to the submarines. The survivors struggled to shore, where they tried to regroup with the other armed Marines who didn’t try to go into the water. There were a total of 11 MIA on the island 9 were captured and executed by the Japanese commander. The other 2 were never found. Mission 2: The Battle of Peleliu, ironically called Operation Stalemate II, where the 1st Marine Division discovered how hard the Japanese were going to fight for a single island. You’re playing as what I assume is the 7th Marine Regiment landing on Orange 3. The Japanese gave heavy resistance on the beach, Marines were caught in a crossfire the only escape was forward. Orange Beach 3 in particular had a lot of man made obstacles and trenches. Which hindered the tracks, it wasn’t a coral reef you got stuck on. The Japanese had actually learned from the Battle of Tarawa when the US Marine Tractors harmlessly rolled over the coral as the Japanese watched in horror. After capturing the Airfield the 7th moved North and took out the field guns. Then the 7th held the airfield although remained under sustain Japanese fire from Umurbrogol Mountain. Then came “Bloody Nose Ridge” which the Marines of the 7th suffered a 46% casualty rate (that means both wounded and dead) The Marines would finally break the Japanese defenders a month later. Mission 3: The Battle of Stalingrad, was one of the major turning points of the War. So Germany had been kicking the Soviet’s ass up to this point. Committing pretty much every war crime imaginable along the way. Germany needed several things from Stalingrad. 1. They had access and could cut off traffic in the Volga River 2. They had control of a Major Railway junction 3. This was the gateway to the Caucus oil fields which Germany desperately. You see because Nazis are fucking stupid they decided to invade the world without enough fuel so they needed that gas. First Stalingrad was bombarded by the Luftwaffe (German Air Force). The Soviets were throwing everything they could, keeping the Nazis out of the city. The Nazis eventually reached the city but failed to cross and gain a foothold on the other side of the Volga. The Soviets employed tactics what I can only describe as cruel, Stalin issues the infamous order No.277 “All commanders who ordered unauthorized retreats will be subject to military tribunal.” Blocking Detachments made up of the NKVD (the secret police/military police) would shoot retreating soldiers, commissars would execute anyone deemed a “coward”. The streets were no longer measured in meters, but in corpses as one German officer said. Fires raged through the city; men and women fought in the sewers, in basements, through dilapidated buildings. It was brutal urban fighting for months. Constant air attacks and finally. Relief came and Zhukov’s Army Group had shown up to relieve the city. Several months of fighting continued, until the German 6th Army became surrounded. They fought until they were too exhausted, weak, ill, wounded, or dead. It was one of the deadliest battles of the war. Mission 4: The Battle of Seelow Heights, this was the opening phase of the Battle of Berlin. Seelow Heights was a suburb of Berlin. The Opening of the Battle saw a massive artillery barrage 9,000 artillery pieces fired 500,000 shells for 30mins. The Soviets advanced across the swampy land until they were halted by a German Counter-barrage. Zhukov then pulled his ultimate trick…throw more men at the problem until it goes away. The Soviets then advanced with heavy losses. They did not care, they were in Germany and it was revenge at any cost.

Hello, New subscriber here! You started with, unapologetically, the best campaign in the series! Unlike other cod games that seem to make us enjoy war in a Hollywood way, WaW never glorified it. Everything feels real, mature and respectful. Taking the mechanics of the original 3 games and adding realistic violence made this game one of the best ww2 shooters and put Treyarch on the map as they still go strong today. Also, I know that it might be weird for some, but you are playing as the Russians and this game portrays them in a very respectful way. I know that people in the West do not like the Russians nor do they want to understand them, but thankfully, I come from a country that has a similar history. It's because of the Russians and their heroic sacrifice that countries like mine were freed. Out of the 60 million people that gave their lives in ww2 , 20 million of those are Russians. That's why like them we never forget.

This game, along with the Medal of Honor series, got me into learning about WW2 and history in general. I think it's because wanting to know why full-scale conflict like the world wars even started perplexed me as a kid. It was insane to me that tens of millions of people would be lost to conflicts that didn't even last a decade. World at War was the last Call of Duty that paid genuine homage to veterans and kept a degree of historic authenticity. Is this game historically accurate? Not really. But it definitely is authentic. Back when game developers could actually make good games.

The song you thought was recognizable was actually the menu theme for zombies as well. A few of the songs from Nazi zombies carried over to BO1 zombies mode. Probably the most notable is the round change song also known as Hells Gate. You might have also noticed when that song was playing though that the Nazi general that was walking around actually share the same character model as Richtofen from Nazi zombies. Zombies was a developer side project that only came to WaW because the devs thought it was fun when playing around with the new AI system.

The character models for the Ultimis Zombies characters were reused. Richtofen = General Amsel, Dempsey = Pvt. Polonsky, Nikolai = Pvt. Chernov, Takeo = default Japanese Officer.

One of my cousins saw combat in the Middle East. Came back with some ptsd. Though my understanding, not as bad as some. I never saw him get triggered, but my other cousin told me about a time or 2 during family gatherings. As for games like this, he did love/play games like battlefield and CoD. I asked how he is playing those games, and he said he can usually handle it, but sometimes he does have to take a break from it. He is medically discharged, so he never had to go back.

Giving me ptsd remembering completing this on veteran difficulty and the infinite enemy spawn and Grenada spam. Still one of the best campaigns across the entire series though

Really enjoying this play through so far! Have you played the Sniper Elite games? Given how much you liked the sniping and your preference for bolt action rifles, I think they’d be right up your alley, particularly 3,4, and 5.
