Gotta listen to Pinkerton, their second album. Corrosive, explosive, existencialist, with depresive but honest lyrics, and goes one step beyond in terms of composition. Great album, unjustly underreated when it was released, and an icon of the '90 nowadays,

Nice reaction as usual, glad to see Weezer caught on for you. The Blue Album is definitely a good introduction to Weezer! Their sound changes a lot throughout the years, but there's at least something to like about the stages of the journey. My personal favorites along with Blue are definitely Pinkerton and Maladroit, the somewhat darker albums. I hope you at least get to Pinkerton one day, it changed things forever for the band!

You’re awesome for this, there’s not enough good reactions for weezer albums. Obviously gotta do Pinkerton next but from there I think you got a few options. Although I’m a red defender, I understand why ppl dislike it. I think the White Album, EWBAE, and OK human are all good choices tho

To answer your question from the intro, Weezer did introduce a new sound (and look) in the 90s. More than anything, though, was the attitude. In about 5 years we went from hair bands like Poison to grunge like Nirvana - then Weezer came out with this hard rock (but still pop) sound from four nerdy guys. The heavy guitar tone is a trademark of their sound and they always reminded me a bit of the Beach Boys with harmonies and the way Rivers Cuomo (lead singer) really pours his introspective self into the music and lyrics.

It was pretty clear you weren't really feeling the first few tracks too much. I knew that you were gonna prefer the 2nd half of the album. Even though this album seems not to be what you usually listen to, it's cool to see you be open minded about albums like this I hope you have a Green Day album on the list for upcoming reactions. Dookie and American Idiot are their most well known,. If you are planning on listening to them, I think you should start with Dookie since it's their first big hit, and then depending on how you feel about that album, either listen to the follow up album Insomniac, or go to American Idiot if you want something different

Lovely reaction! I'm interested to see if your opinion on My Name is Jonas changes as you keep listening to the album. I agree that No One Else and The World has Turned and Left Me Here are pretty standard rock sounding, but My Name is Jonas is one of my faves from this album and Weezer in general. Also you should definitely cover Pinkerton next, it was a big album for me growing up and it's their 2nd album so you'll get to see how they evolved after their debut. Also also, Teenage Dirtbag is by Wheatus, not weezer. If you go listen to it again you'll hear the lead singer sounds nothing like Weezer's singer. Don't worry, lots of people make that mistake!

You asked “was this a new sound?” Yes and no. Weezer came out amidst the dominance of grunge and its darker, angrier sound (which was a reaction from the super poppy 80s mainstream sound, whether it was hair metal that dominated rock radio, or r&b flavored pop). Weezer shared the raw, unpolished sound of grunge and other early 90s rock music, but where grunge was performed by tragically cool and tragically sad underground rebels, Weezer was 4 nerdy college guys. They weren’t “cool”. They shared grunge’s disaffected attitude, but had a completely different vibe, kinda awkward, dorky and secure in their insecurity. The real secret is that grunge music and Weezer alike (along with a number of other bands of the era) were profoundly influenced by the post-punk underground music of the mid-to-late 80s. Pixies, Sonic Youth, Jesus Lizard, Husker Du, The Replacements, etc. So was Weezer a new sound? Yeah but also not really. But their unique look and vibe helped them climb out of obscurity and bring their style of post-punk alternative rock into the mainstream, something that their inspirations never was able to fully achieve. The Pixies, Husker Du, and the Violent Femmes walked so Weezer and Nirvana and everyone else could run

@@cavemanjack no problem, happy to provide some musical context! It would be interesting to hear your reaction/review of some of the post-punk/alternative rock albums from the bands I mentioned. The Pixies, The Replacements, Husker Du, etc. None of them achieved mainstream success or popularity, but all of them had underground momentum as well as lots of critical acclaim and respect which has only grown in the intervening years, especially as their importance and influence becomes more and more apparent

Pinkerton (the album after this one) is my favourite by them, but it’s a lot darker and grungier. When it first came out, critics absolutely killed it to the point where I believe weezer went on hiatus for a while. But as time’s gone on, people have been appreciating it more and more and to me it’s their best work. Another one of theirs worth checking out is the white album which is a little newer. I dunno they’re an odd band that goes all sorts of directions creatively but when they hit, they hit.

Did you just say you don’t know who Buddy Holly is? wow. You seem to only notice incidental things, like things my mother might say if she was listening to this. Do you not realize this is 95 percent about the art of songwriting? It’s like giving commentary on a Lakers game and only talking about the color and texture of their uniforms. You don’t seem to have any musical knowledge whatsoever.
