I'm 5 years late, but..... I LOVE IT. You really nailed down aspects that are great and frustrating. The element of this game that is honestly really well considered is how hard it is to anticipate a twist or a surprise. Great stuff as usual Alec!

Glad you liked it! I just gave this a watch for the first time in a hot minute and oh geeze... I sounded SO much more fun and likeable back then. I need to play more emotionally shattering games and see if that helps me pick up the energy again :P

Damn its a good day when we get a video from vzed. Listen you can spoil the game as much as you want because I don't care about spoilers. Your definitely one of the best analytical theorists in video games that I've ever listened to and your fondness for this game greatly exemplifies that. Its a series that i want to try myself but I really have no idea when I'll get around to it but as far as I'm concerned this game is a timeless classic and something I absolutely look forward to playing when I have a free chance to do so.

Hey, nice video :) I did like that you had tiered spoilers, but I gotta say it's unfortunate you didn't clarify what your levels meant. I mean, you ranked only a 5/10 giving away the solution for the first chapter, the first few deaths, major character twists and indirectly telling which characters make it to the end, and scenes from various end-game stuff. And then a sudden jump to 10/10: everything.

I actually finished 2 just a week or so ago and i really liked it, but i have eto say it was a departure from 1, and i'm not really sure if it had the same effect on me? I'm considering how i might tackle a video on it, but i will need to let it simmer for a while before i go for it.

Yeah that makes sense, it definitely does some things differently. Given how you called attention to how little the state of the outside world mattered to the narrative of DR1 here, I assumed the fact 2 expands on the details more and tries to build a greater continuity/lore around this might give a contrasting experience for you, at least around this point. Still, glad to hear you enjoyed it! I remember back when I first experienced them I felt I enjoyed 2 more, but your analysis helped my appreciate 1's more simple, self-contained approach to being a murder mystery and character focused first and foremost. It might be worthwhile for me to revisit them, especially now that I've come off V3 about a month ago. (Sorry for the text wall haha)

I love the Danganronpa series and this video did an amazing job of explaining what's so great about the first entry! No clue if you still pay attention to this comment section, but I wonder if you ever finished the other games? If so, what did you think of them?

I do pay attention to the comments (mostly)! I finished the second soon after finishing this video and really liked it. It might be my favourite of the two so far? It's been a while since i've put real thought into it, though. I started the third one soon after but it kind of became too much Danganronpa too quickly and stopped about half way through. It has stayed in my mind since then and i fully intend to go back to it but i don't really have a full impression of it yet. I think i could see myself returning to do videos on the rest of the series eventually but with my new workflow i don't know when or how those would happen at this time.

I feel like Danganronpa 2 really picked up the things that worked about the first game, and polished the things that worked a little less, without losing the aspect of subversion you talk about in this video. Can also definitely imagine the 'Danganronpa fatigue' playing all three of them shortly after one another. As much as I love the wacky characters and the over the top delivery, it can be a bit much after a while. Can also definitely recommend Danganronpa V3! I believe it's a bit controversial between fans of the game, but it definitely left an impression on me. I hope you enjoy it too whenever you get to it! Also no pressure about a video. I see the channel has changed since this video (loved your new puzzle game video series by the way!), so I can imagine it being a bit different now. But if you do make a follow-up video about the series, I'll be here for it!

This was an amazing video, and the final push it took to get me to try this game out. I’m so glad I did, and after finishing it up, the first thing I did was come back and watch this full video. You did a really great job summing up what made this experience so special and unique, and how it was able to reach out and grip the player emotionally. Thank goodness you decided not to spoil things! I bought this game (and the other main entries) after watching the first three chapters played, and plan on actually PLAYING through it after getting the Platinum for Crash 2 (so as to give myself a break from doing all the Zero Escape games back to back), so to ruin things PAST that would've been horrible!

Though thanks to the tiered spoiler system you implemented and the way you wrote that part of the script, I was easily able to stop BEFORE being spoiled, so... thanks anyway? I guess what I'm saying is... that experiment with tiered spoiler rankings was successful, keep that!

I could play this game, but I unfortunately was already spoiled by watching the anime. Still, I think it's a good companion piece in comparison. Enjoy Virtue's Last Escape. I've already beaten it completely (though I think I'm lost in finding the true ending), but you'll love it. As for Zero Time Dilemma, I'm kind of lost within that game's contexts.

At the strong (and regular) suggestion from my brother that I play this game I started it up recently and felt really uninterested to play more. I knew when I was finished with the game, in whatever capacity that was, that I’d come here to see what you had to say (by the way, I absolutely still love your writing and editing) but I didn’t expect that after the prologue (with its negging protag and cliche/problematic treatment of female characters) id be so put off that I was seeking help in finding what people like about the game. I know that’s really early in the game but it really was off putting. And then you got to the death of the pop star and I went “What?!” and it’s given me a second wind to keep going, especially if it’s actually gonna do some commentary/meta acknowledgement of its archetypal characters. I mean I had heard that going in, but I was really getting annoyed with Makoto so hopefully he changes a bit when things get really real. Thanks for giving me the motivation to play on, I’ve paused just before you get into 3/10 spoilers (the first investigation) and I’ll come back whenever I’ve finished the game. Thanks Alec!
