My two favourite moments in the show are both Reigen related. One was in season 1 near the end, when Reigen was desperately trying to stop Mob from using his powers to kill. In the context of the story, it would have been completely justified (all his friends/family are in danger, he needs to save them). But all Reigen cared about was a child not getting blood on his hands, and having to live with the guilt. The second is the confession in season 3 that he didn't have any powers. Which is hilarious because at this point, everyone watching the show and everyone in their world knows this already. But it was big that he actually said it out loud, and actually gave himself no room to wiggle out of it. Oh and I guess third is that one guy's alien outer space adventure lol

I think it's important to note that as a coming of age story it puts out a ton of really positive figures for young men to look to in a way a lot of media today has been drifting from in our current social climate. Viewed through a lens of positive masculinity and negative masculinity, the finale and the things we should learn about ourselves and relationships makes it an even more powerful story especially for those who are also coming of age.

Regarding the characters saying things that are cheesy and on the nose dialog, I would agree with you IF it wasn't MP100. With Mod psycho one of the main themes is learning to express your emotions instead of suppressing them, one of the biggest ways to do so is by saying things out loud even if it's chessy. Most people even in real life struggle to express themselves out of fear of being cheesy or cringy, having the emotional climax of the charecter arcs be them outright saying how they feel deep down even if it's super chessy and on the nose felt very cathartic to me, it shows how far the characters have come for them to be that open with there feelings
@user-element1153 ай бұрын
I agree with this, but I don’t get how this is a negative of MP100 for her, but her favorite manga/anime is one piece which I think has a lot of on the nose dialogue. I love both series so it’s nothing against one piece.

@nichescenes your second paragraph is quite bias at least in some aspects. Conservative clothing has nothing to do with it. Different stories go for different clothing styles based on the tones and themes. You know, unless you're reading an ecchi story. Which literally translates to softcore porn. Eastern storytelling also has almost always been about emotions. It's about the inner selves, self discovery and emotional struggles. It makes sense since a lot of the eastern stories were inspired by spiritual Buddhism. Meanwhile, western storytelling has almost always relied on spectacles and chosen heroes, power struggles of clear good and evil factions. Aka bible inspirations. Western story telling very rarely, if ever focuses so deeply on emotional aspects as Eastern story telling does

Imo this is an modern amine classic, not just is the adaptation's execution essentially perfect, but the whole story got that treatment (which is very rare lol). It's borderline nostalgia inducing given how long it actually took for all three seasons to be made (though 3/4 years between seasons is a pretty good case, all anime considered). Edit: amine💀

There's this line I love during the teleport fight from teru. "There are people in this world with powers you can't even fathom, you're just an ordinary man, even I could beat you" and i love it. Teru got humbled early on and never let it drops from his mind that the world is full of people doing incredible things he could never do himself. Clearly one of the most versatile quick on the draw espers in the series and he doesn't even consider it all that important anymore

If you like Mob Psycho 100, I HIGHLY recommend Ranking of Kings. It’s one of my favorite anime ever. It’s a beautifully drawn anime with surprisingly deep themes. A lot more tragic stuff happens there compared to Mob Psycho. That anime made me feel the most emotion in the shortest timeframe. It’s almost unfair how good it is. And it makes you fall in love with so many of the characters. Even random side characters that barely show up for an episode or two. I will say as well: it does “show, don’t tell” INCREDIBLY well. Which makes sense, because the main character is deaf and can’t speak. So you feel all the emotions mostly through action rather then conversation. Though you do see a few really hard-hitting conversations as well.

One thing I like is that it's nit "Subversive" for the sake of it. Mob joining the Body Improvement Club has real meaning in the story for example. And the S1 Climax addressed the big YA Elephant, these characters are children. For us reading/watching it's a work of fiction that's cool and badass, but Reigen sees it for the tragedy it is.

Mob Psycho 100 is probably my favorite show of all time. I relate to Mob a lot. Like, a lot a lot. I was a shy, nerdy boy when I was younger, and I didn't have a lot of friends. I'm trans now, and the whole final arc with self-acceptance being the main theme hit so hard for me. I had also depersonalized and dissociated from my emotions while I was running from myself, just like Mob. Like Mob, I was terrified of letting go, of losing that sort of hypervigilance to keep everything in check at all times, even when I was alone. So learning how to get in touch with myself has been a long and ongoing journey, and this show reflected so much of myself back to me that I fell in love with it right away. Then there's all the things that everyone else loves about it too, the weird, quirky sense of humor, the animation, the off-beat music, all of it. 10/10 show for me.

The conversation that Reigen had at the end of the show with mob was one I needed to see much earlier in my life. Having lead a very isolated life for a long time made me continue my isolated ways even after the circumstances of my isolation changed. And a big part of it was being scared of how others would react to really know me. I always saw it as flaws I needed to get rid of. But being told that everyone struggles with stuff like that and that instead of hiding myself or shaming myself, I need to accept myself did great things for me. I fully believe that watching Mob Psycho 100 gave me some lessons that helped me living a better life now

I think the reason some scenes are so on-the-nose/cheesy is because the author doesn't want to "waste" any time with people misinterpreting the situation. its such a short anime that having part of the audience not getting the point right away might deter them from focusing on the story that the author wants to write. sometimes when the story is way longer, the author has more time and opportunities to hammer in the point so its not always so straightforward but in Mob Psyco's case its pretty short so yeah, that's my reasoning at least. awesome video as always Murphy! thanks

This series is among my favorites of all time - saccharine on the nose moments notwithstanding - because it's one of the few series about bettering oneself that shows self-improvement in a context of incremental improvement and patience. I also have been working on, for many years now, the kinds of emotional repression that Mob experiences. I'm overcoming it day by day, in part through the show's sweetness and hopefulness. In that sense, I have no problems with it. I don't think your read is wrong on the on-the-nose stuff, but I personally found it worked in context. Especially since the mangaka's own goal was to make something "kind." I'm okay with kindness being obvious. Body Improvement are the bestest bois, no controversy there.

32 episodes, short and sweet I loved it so much. The best thing for me is how relatable it was and being able to reflect on my time of adolescence compared to mob. i understand what you mean by the cheesy-ness, and believe me i felt it too at times when watching for the first time. however the more i think about it the happier it makes me. mp100 feels like a story made for weird kids or anyone who's ever felt a little bit like mob, and growing up i wish people would have told me "the point" in words. so many times things flew over my head because people were hinting at things i didn't see (like tsubomi when she said "get a clue" to mob) and maybe ignorance is bliss, but i wish people told me what they were thinking a lot of the time! and mp100 always does :)

I hear you about the idea that some of the resolution moments feel like they fall flat and cheesy. But personally, I resonate a lot with Mob because he comes off ASD-coded to me, and I have ASD. There's a level of directness that really resonates with me. I feel like there are so many layers of exploration of one's self and how we fit into society and the relationships and social circles that help to shape us. It can sometimes help us define parts of ourselves, whether by affiliation, or in many cases with Mob, by contrast/juxtaposition. That said, I actually really loved the directness of a lot of the resolutions that ended kind of cheesy. That level of directness is often a strong trait in people with ASD, and what precedes it many times, at least for myself, is that turmoil and hours, if not days or weeks, of internal processing that culminate with a simple statement of "Oh. This is why i was struggling," or "Oh. This is why I was sad." Sometimes, even acknowledging the source of distress can 'cause an unfortunate cycle of increasing distress. My perception was that this type of resolution, by being able to say it out loud, shows a new level of self-awareness and honesty with themselves and those they care about, that had not been achieved prior. While I agree that I prefer when we're shown, not told, in media, I find it very human that sometimes resolution means being able to admit something out loud and have a good sigh of relief that you've finally identified why there was so much dissonance, and why your behavior was matching it.

The thing I love most about Mob Psycho 100’s theme of self improvement is how it extends past the narrative to the creation of the work as a whole. One is a great writer, but his character art is known for being rough and kind of off putting, but while many would be discouraged. Did you check out the manga? If you're interested I'd recommend checking out the season 2 finale in the manga. There's a good bit of characterization that's lost in the transition between mediums, and the emotional conflict in Mob is much more pronounced. Chapters 89 and 90 specifically could fill a volume on their own, and I think it's some of ONE's best work. They're both fantastic, but the manga has its own facets I'd recommend checking out.
