The death of Gwen Stacy (which occurred 50 years ago in 1973) is considered to be one of the landmark moments in comic book history. It was the first time the superhero failed to save his love interest, and marks the end of an age of "innocence" in superhero comics. More specifically, it is generally said to be the event that marks the end of the "Silver Age" of Comic Books -- giving way to the "Bronze Age" of Comic Books. In the original story, she died at the hands of the Green Goblin as well (except it was Norman, not Harry). For most comic book fans who went to see this movie in the theater, the moment we saw that the Green Goblin was going to be the villain in a movie featuring Gwen Stacy, we could see this coming.

@@JOKER-py9np And..Controversial opinion, but this movie's version of Green Goblin is better than Willem Defoe's version imo. Sam Raimi's Goblin was suffering from a split personality disorder, with an evil half taking over the body.. But what I like about this one - is that there's no new personality taking hold... It's just a twenty year-old man, unwanted by his father, betrayed by his friend, framed by his company, left to die a horrible death with no one to go to....Pushed over the edge, slowly losing it until his desperate attempt to survive turns him into a freak, and all he wants to do now is to make his only friend bleed for stripping him of all his hope. TASM 2 Goblin is an actually intimidating, scary, psychotic villain...And that's who he truly turned into...There's no recovering from that, no cure...Just a broken man with a ruined life and a shattered mind

@@mr.patriotjol Disagree. The chemistry TASM 2 Peter and Harry build over this one movie feels more genuine and heartfelt than a whole trilogy of Raimi Harry. Yeah, that's how she died in the comics... except that instead of her head hits the pavement, how fast she was falling and how Peter sent the web to catch her it actually snapped her neck because of the force of a sudden stop when she was caught by the web in the same way. Different but very very similar. When the time came I was bracing myself because I knew she was going to meet the same fate as her comic book counterpart. Knowing what was going to happen, I still cried. Sad in the comic, sad in cinema. Great reaction. :)
@cicerofigg Жыл бұрын
I don’t think Peter and Gwen’s relationship was toxic at all. They each control their own lives, so whatever happens is their fault. Gwen knew of the risks, but even though they existed she preferred to live her life with Peter, even if it meant it would kill her one day. And Peter, even though he knew keeping Gwen alongside him would just put her on a dangerous spot, he knew she can make her own decisions, she’s not a dumbass female character like Mary Jane in Tobey Maguire’s SM, so they actually were a pretty solid couple. Marc Webb really knows how to write a romance, I hope they give him one more chance with TASM3, but this time with a better writer.
@XiaoyuuuYT Жыл бұрын
"She can make her own decisions" Lmao so basically you're saying Spidey allowed Gwen to perform suicide cause that's what she wants to do, is that it? MJ is trash but if Gwen's death wasn't canon, she would've been in the same boat.
@Whispernyan Жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm sorry I can't condone stuff like this. I really don't see how people can watch these movies and their takeaway be that their relationship isn't toxic. Gwen doesn't respect any of her partner's wishes, yes you should be able to make your own decisions in a relationship but that doesn't mean actively going against your partner's decisions. A firefighter isn't going to want their none experienced partner to be helping them fight a fire, and they shouldn't be demonized for not wanting that. It's a level of empowerment that tips back over onto the wrong side, and it's such a harmful message to be spreading. It's pretty clear the movie isn't suggesting that their relationship was a good one, otherwise the movie would make a point to justify Gwen's actions, and while she does help take down Eletctro (mind you the movie makes a point to establish that Gwen was able to help fight Electro without physically being there, as she helps Peter find a way to keep his web shooters from frying), it ultimately justifies Peter's reluctance with Gwen getting caught up in a scramble she had no involvement in, just to be used to hurt Peter and her death was completely meaningless. I feel like since the Spiderman movies are some of the few superhero related properties where the partner doesn't get upset over the hero risking themselves being a superhero, people just automatically pose them as being a positive relationship when that couldn't be further from the truth and they're just exploring a different negative side.
@billbill6094 Жыл бұрын
Mary Jane in the Raimi movies really sucked when you think about it. She cheats on every single boyfriend/fiance she has and strings Pete along hard. Not to say Pete was always in the right, but it's like Raimi never actually talked to a woman.

The thing is.. Peter and Gwen knew the risk of being in a relationship. We saw from the first movie that Gwen is well aware, supportive, and always wants to help Peter/Spider-Man even if it’s dangerous. So even though Peter did try to keep his distance and even though Gwen also tried to move on. Obviously, they still love, care, and worry about each other. I love how active Gwen is and how she’s not the damsel in distress. She is intelligent and literally helps Peter find a way to defeat Electro..just like what she did in the last movie. But yeah.. they decided to stay together despite the risks. I feel like they didn’t expect to lose each other so fast after deciding to stay together. But this has always been Gwen and Peter’s fate.. whether it was a Gwen timeline or Peter timeline..there’s always death. As someone already mentioned in the comments Peter actually had gfs more so when he went to college. But he’s not as geeky or not good with the ladies as people think he is.. in the comic books..Peter is more so a drifter..not so much an outsider. He doesn’t categorize or belong in a group or “trope”. He’s indeed intelligent, but still quite socially awkward at times which causes him to get bullied. Although he had crushes and interests in some girls, Gwen was like his legit serious relationship. There’s also iterations of Gwen and MJ being friends and when Gwen died, MJ came to comfort Peter when he was grieving. There was actually a MJ casted for this movie, Shailene Woodley actually shot some scenes with Andrew and Emma. But I guess writers/producers felt that it might be too much to introduce MJ so quickly after Gwen’s death. But you do get see a glimpse of MJ in the ending scene when Rhino causes chaos in the city. You see a diner and a girl with red hair behind the counter..that was Shailene but of course they didn’t show a close up of her. But there were pictures of her in the same outfit in the same area. It’s such a shame they couldn’t get TASM3 going due to TASM2 not making a lot of money and the criticism writing wise that it got at the time.

9:18 lemme explain here what max is going through (Jamie Fox). Max has a genius level IQ pretty sure hes an engineer or scientist because why would he work at oscorp if he was stupid or not some type of genius engineer and physicist. Oscorp is a research and development company for weapons and new technology so to work there you need to be able to build design or invent tech or maintain. max is having his original invention stolen from him because he didnt think to get a patent. Max is (reasonably) angry because his ideas are getting stolen and used without any pay or credit to his name. he is a little off but probably hasn't gotten therapy in many years if ever. He is getting treated shit at work by his boss and he is just angry and sad all the time, But i bet he makes hella money so that's why he endures working at oscorp. so all these factors play into increasing his mental instability rather than decreasing it also making it gradually much worse until he breaks and becomes a villain. FYI (electro's color scheme in the comics is a yellow face mask and a greeen and yellow suit and he has yellow lightning powers or electricity instead of what they went with in this movie the blue color popwers and a black suit which i like both can't decide which is best eh yo if you read this lemme know ur fav electro variant.

You've probably been told already, this is one of the most impactful moments in the comics. This was the moment that the superhero protagonist didn't win and wasn't able to save the love interest character. MJ came after Gwen, which is why you were wondering who is gwen and why is she here in these movies. The other comparable story in DC is the death of Robin. There are 4 main people who became Robin in the comics, one of them was killed by the Joker but he was revived and appears in later comics.

When Peter and Gwen are in a relationship one of them dies that's why the Gwen from the Tobey Maguire spider man 3 Gwen didn't die because in the original script Gwen was supposed to be in the taxi not Mary Jane but it made more sense for harry to get involved if Mary Jane was in the taxi. Also Spider-Man healing is incredible he can heal from fatal injuries overnight some wounds that would take six months will heal in a day or two for him.

He actually got her in time, the problem was whiplash. The momentum caused her neck to snap when he stopped her body. It’s the reason she’s not bleeding and her brains aren’t splattered on the ground. Her head did not hit the ground. What you heard wasn’t her head hitting the floor, it was the sound of her neck snapping.

So, not in time lol
@marvin3992 Жыл бұрын
@@py16667 No, even if she was 20 feet high when he caught her, she would've died. He did catch her in time, he just caught her wrong. By saying, "He caught her in time", I was merely saying that he prevented her from hitting the ground, which he did.
@artbyjem5020 Жыл бұрын
@@marvin3992 That's true in the comics but in the movie they changed it, her head hits the pavement. I guess they decided it was more clear for viewers what happened or something.

if he had somehow managed to yank her up as the web attached to her, it probably would have snapped her neck anyway. she was cooked the moment the web we severed unfortunately...

Yes. Most of the times in the comics Gwen dies if involved with Spidey. Not including Spider-Gwen ones. Actually in the main comic Gwen was Peter's first love. Then she died and only then MJ comes in.

Gwen's death was iconic in the comics. All my fellow comic nerds knew what was coming when we saw the villain and Gwen.

You’ve got some great choices for Reaction videos. I highly recommend the Lost in Space series. It’s like watching an epic movie every single episode and it got everything from. Great acting to spectacular special effects to great storylines and plenty of actionand drama

Fun fact: That Felicia girl is Black Cat, another character from the Marvel comics (very similar to DC’s Catwoman) but obviously didn’t see her in costume in this movie. If you’ve played Spiderman PS4 you should know who Black Cat is.
