So, another video following my early season fly fishing. This time I got finished from work a bit earlier and had time to dash across to fish Loch Leathan for a couple of hours in the late afternoon. It was a wild old day, as it has been for much of mid March through to early April. Very cold again so I headed out more in hope than perhaps belief that I could break my duck for 2024.
As always, many thanks for taking time to watch the videos, I hope you enjoy it. Also thanks to people that like, subscribe and comment on the videos, it is much appreciated.
The loch in this video is fly only and controlled by Portree Angling Association, visit the website below for more info:

Thanks, I had a great evening on Sunday, the mild spell (or dare I even say - warm) over the weekend seemed to help. All the best hope you have a good season 👍

Thanks, yes you have to just get out when the opportunity arises! It’s a big loch so there’s usually somewhere you can find when it’s wild like that although as someone pointed out, getting attacked by the scoop net it bloody annoying! All the best.

Thank you, yes I’m lucky to live over here, like most I just grab the time when I have it and some days it’s wild like that. I was out yesterday evening and it was flat calm and had some great sport though I lost a nice brownie which I am still trying to get over. It wasn’t a monster but it would have been my best for a while. Likewise, all the best for the rest of the season.

Thanks, they really are lovely fish with such variation across different lochs. There are some big ones in there, a 9lb wild brown trout was caught on fly last season, beast of a fish. All the best hope your fishing is going well.

Well done on your first trout of the year. 4 more weeks and I shall be up there fishing 🙂 Hopefully the weather will have improved by then.

Thanks, it was nice to get a wild brownie first. Well, today has been lovely and through the week we had a couple of nice spring days. So i’m hopeful you should get some good conditions. The lochs have been fishing well in the last week or so, when conditions have been good, so fingers crossed for your visit. I think I’m going for a cast tomorrow evening, members being able to fish lochs from the bank on Sundays has made a big difference.

Nice to get a pull on the line again isn't it. That net gave you a good fight also 😂.

😂 well observed! Me and that bloody net, surprised it didn’t go over my head the amount of massive holes in it. I was properly losing patience with it, so in the end I just dragged it along the bank behind me on the lanyard 😆

Nice session, Matt, the sound quality is vastly better, what camera are u using now? Nice brownie, can't beat those Highland fish. I noticed you were concentrating on the near margin? That new club secretary doesn't mess about, new boat shed already??😂 Enjoy Stonehaven, its a lovely spot. Your mrs won't thank me for saying this, but there's 2 small sea trout rivers run into either end of the bay there, although I doubt very much if they hold anything yet. The bay is renowned for saltwater sea trout fly-fishing too, though I've only had coalfish there, great sport on a 5# set up. Tight lines 👍 👌

Thank you Dave, here’s the ‘long reply’….. the camera is a DJI Osmo Action 4 I got the adventure pack which has 3 batteries and some other stuff. It was between that and a Go Pro but I felt it was the way to go after watching stuff online. So far really pleased with it, it’s waterproof as it is so no extra case required (you can get one) and has a replaceable lens cover. Has all that horizon balancing and stuff need to have a mess about with it. Yes, I quite often fish the margin, there is a drop off along a few of the banks as well as shallow peaty areas where I’d maybe try to cast more directly out depending on the wind of course. So yes, I find fish can lay closish in, sp fish along and across the drop off, maybe I should fish straight out and would do better if i did 😆 the conundrum is, when we boat fish, the joke is we are always casting into the shore and hugging the bank whereas bank fishing some try to reach the horizon! When the mayfly are on, fish can be a bit further out which is the advantage of the boats unless you can find a bank with the wind maybe bringing them in a bit closer. To be honest I’ve not had to have too much involvement with the new shed (i get lots of emails asking for advice and generally keep our members up to date with stuff), the new chairman and treasurer as well as others have been very proactive getting it all sorted, the new one looks great, proper steel structure it isn’t going anywhere touch wood! Thankfully we have a great group of members, some retired now and they continue to give the club a lot of their time. We had a nice trip to Stonehaven round easter cheers. I know the burn you mean, I was remarking to my lad that I bet sea trout run it 😆 such a bore! Dunnottar Castle was great and weather was cracking, we drove back the inland route near Strathdon, the Don looks amazing. There were people fly fishing at Alford, it looks great, the brown trout fishing in particular looks really interesting. All the best 👍

For a short time, they're all the same size 😍 Good for you to get off the mark, I was out last week and had 2 or 3 that size and some Arctic Char a lot smaller. Still a fantastic trip 😊

@@povfishingorkney yeah spot on, it doesn’t bother me either, just good to be away from work & out in nature and back fishing. I’ll be having a go on the burns soon with the 3 wt too, variety is the spice of life as they say 👍

Nice we fish to start your season off with. Far too cold up here but had a few to just over 2lbs in the shallows. Tight lines for your next trip out Mat.

@@mikef6114 now then Mike, hope you are doing ok. Just a couple of pounders 😆 wow, nice fish, some corkers up there, well done. Yes it was nice to get off the mark, I had a great evening on Sunday and lost a good brownie when it jumped, my fault playing it off the reel which i normally never really do. Hey ho, it wasn’t 2lb but over a pound easy, would have been my best in a while. Things are definitely coming to life here. All the best for your season.

Has your local river settled down yet? First proper mild weather over the weekend up here and the wind dropped, I had a good evening last night fishing from 5 til dusk, a week ago that seemed impossible! All the best & sure that first of the season will be along soon.

@@highlandfishingdiary8818 it's starting to settle, but it's still very, very cold. i went out an hour too early last week and missed the afternoon sun, but I reckon a few more days should wake it up enough.
