Yikes, it's hard to be a composer without knowing music theory. Don't get me wrong, he knows some stuff, but music theory is the framework of music, the first and last thing that comes in music development. It's hard to make a review without it.

@@jameswoodland2719 anecdotal but I know several people who can compose multiple instruments and they barely know any music theory. music theory is great because it codifies and standardizes what we know from musical experience, but many people learn by ear or are surrounded by musicians their whole life and can pick up and understand which notes relate to each other and which ones are dissonant without understanding the how of it all. lots of trial and error can get a person to be able to play or write in key without understanding what the key even is.

1:19:19 to answer your question about Japanese musicians diving deeper into genres, yes I agree that Japanese musicians are not afraid to blur genres/lines. You should absolutely try Journey. It would be a great primer for you to get used to modern video game controls, and it tells a very affective, emotional story without any words or text. It takes about two hours to run through start to finish, but there's no need to pay through it non stop, either. Still here from the start!

@@cheetored20 It’s a game where you, as you may expect, walk a journey. Most of it is walking around and seeing beautiful vistas. Despite this, it has a really good story without even having dialogue in any form. One of the stand-out features is that it connects you with random people online for co-op. The game manages to actually make you become attached to your companion even when you have no way to communicate. It’s the pinnacle of quality over quantity, as it is a great but quite short experience. The soundtrack is also top-notch, being the first video game to have its soundtrack nominated for a grammy (in the “Best Soundtrack for Visual Media” category). Overall, I’d highly recommend it, but would wait for a sale if you value length in a game. I beat it in only 2 hours, though I’ve replayed it multiple times since.

The arranger for One-Winged Angel: Rebirth is Nishiki Yasunori (Octopath Traveler). He totally rearranged the original Uematsu Nobuo composition in Phase 1, kept the orchestral version in Phase 2 (originally arranged I think by Hamaguchi Shirō), and added the Whisper's Theme by Hamauzu Masashi into the final phase. (This last one is the short section with the gasping chorus and the sense of falling around 29:42). This track is basically both a rethinking and a remaking of the original classic.

I love "Rivers in the Desert" in context of the game. It's played during a boss battle which has a couple phases. During the first set, all you hear is an instrumental. And it sounds really dark, and evil and foreboding. But when you start to push back, and the boss is almost on his last legs, the vocals kick in, and the lyrics are brighter, more hopeful than the music behind it. That's when the entire tone of the song changes. It's not the boss's theme. It's yours. "A river in a dry land The last ace in a lost hand When the hope of new beginnings burned our feet Now we need it! A heartbeat for a tin man An oasis in a singed land Remind us what we're here for Creating new life! Creating rivers in the desert!"

Not sure if someone has already mentioned it or not, but for Hades, it would be lovely to see reactions to either "In the Blood" or "Good riddance", the songs. Preferably both, of course! These are very emotional and vastly different to the OST featured in this video. Hades soundtrack mostly serves to naturally flow with the gameplay, setting mood and making it distinctive, but these two songs stand out on their own in their tender, melancholic beauty and I consider them both incredibly touching. I Was Born for This is a gorgeous song! The lyrics are all pulled from different works of history and literature around the world, all in the original languages-Latin for The Aeneid, Old English for Beowulf, Greek for The Iliad, French for Joan of Arc, and Japanese for Matsuo Basho-all about journeys (naturally) and farewells. The whole crux of the song is the French lyric, from which the song takes its title: "Do not pity me, I was born for this."

The FFXIV rendition is also great, what a way to make it fit in a more modern MMORPG while paying respects to the original. In fact, FFXIV when they use old tracks pays a lot of homages to the original track (Battle with the Four Fiends starts brass-heavy orchestration -> original chiptune -> more string-heavy orchestration) another remix of Battle with the Four Fiends, Forged in Crimson, goes from rock -> prog rock with a choir). The new PvP mode, crystal Conflict uses music from FFIX, Festival of the Hunt, etc.

I commented about Dancing Mad (the Final Fantasy VI one) in an earlier video of yours, I don't remember which one though. I'll repeat it here from the top of my head, and i think it's amazing: The game came in 1994, and the soundtrack is over 3 hours long. The game takes anywhere from 30 to 80 hours to play through for regular people... It even has a full on opera scene. But the fantastic thing is that the game came on a cartridge that was 2.14 megabytes big. That is literally the size of a 1 minute and 29 second MP3 at 192 kbps sample rate.

And to clarify, Vocaloid is a program for synthesizing vocals, and also what an individual voice package and the fictional character representing it is called. Ex: 'Hatsune Miku is a vocaloid whose vocals you can compose with Vocaloid.' Think "Vocal Droid." Languages like you were referring to are called constructed languages or conlangs.

Essentially the villain finds these 3 statues containing three evil gods and he fuses with them and you are climbing this fleshy tower. By the time you reach the top the villain has become this demonic angel looking being with multiple wings flying above the tower.

Dancing Mad is filled with call backs and motifs from other songs in the game's soundtrack, calling back on themes you probably haven't heard in several hours of gameplay. It's just a real ride of a song for people who spent hours beating this game, super climactic and goose-bump inducing. It's like a final culmination of everything the player has been thru, all on a charming, modest, old little console from like 1990.

Which is funny because if you only ran each movement once, the song is actually only like 8 or 9 minutes.

It's so great to see someone take in and appreciate all these classic (for me) songs for the first time and then to add interesting observations and explanations about the music from a composer's perspective. I hope you continue to enjoy your dive into all this stuff.

I highly recommend playing through Journey! First of all the whole Soundtrack is fantastic! Near the end of the game, there is a moment where the gamedesign and the music elevate each other to such heights, that I broke down and cried for like an hour. Also there is a gamemechanic I won’t spoil for you but it’s so genius I couldn’t believe no one has done this before. Journey has a special place in my heart and is my go to game to show people who don’t think games are an artform. Ps: it’s kinda short and a good starting point to get into gaming, cause it don’t requires a lot of skill.

I'd love to hear your reaction to the more 'classic' Kingdom Hearts song pieces (preferably the ones from the KH2.5 re-release), like Darkness of the Unknown or The Thirteenth Struggle. Both are top notch boss fight themes, with completely different feels to them. But like most music in Kingdom Hearts, they share a lot of melodic phrases since they're used for bosses who are allies

Great breakdown and a very nice varied selection of works. I suggest trying anything from the world-renown Joe Hisaishi in the future (but particuarly his work from the animated Ghibli movies) for an example of how much minimalist piano composition can evoke strong emotion.

There's a revived mmo Old School Runescape; The Developers had to create all of the 731 songs in game, as a side gig. There's a classic that most people know called: Sea Shanty 2 - love the knowledge you bring my man!

I’d love to see you play Journey! The game can be seen as a hero’s journey, or as a metaphor for life. The song you listened to here plays as the credits roll, and it’s a very powerful moment. Lots of people cry unexpectedly, and it’s a surprisingly cathartic moment. Just as you described it; it’s both haunting yet hopeful. It’s melancholic and euphoric at the same time. You made it. You completed the journey. If you see it as I do, that means you died. And passed on. Which is sad. But then again, the journey you had was so beautiful, so full of love and wonder and delight. Life is not about a goal. It’s about a journey.

Finally had to subscribe! Video game music was my inspiration from a young age to start playing instruments, join the school band, learn music theory, and overall changed my life for the better. It's great to see it being appreciated. I'm 28 now and still have a playlist of mostly video game music lol

A recommendation that I have, even though you have already listened to some great tracks from Final Fantasy: My favorite versions of One-Winged Angel and Dancing Mad are the versions done by a band called The Black Mages! The band members are actually made of some Final Fantasy composers, most notably Nobuo Uematsu. There's at least one video of them performing One Winged Angel live, and it's just entertaining to listen to and watch. Dancing Mad is also an awesome listen. They're basically metal versions of the tracks, which I just love! Again, not something you have to react to on your channel of course, but even just something to listen to in your free time. 😄 Sorry I didn't catch this live, hopefully I can catch another one some other time! Thank you for taking the time to upload this to KZbin, and just doing what you do! There's so much variety in video game music, and it's just nice to hear you talk about it from a perspective of an experienced composer and breaking it all down for us music normies. 😅 I hope you continue to have fun in this rabbit hole and end up getting to enjoy playing some of these games whether it be on stream or in your free time.

Smiling throughout the whole video. You seem like a really cool guy. I'd really recommend playing Journey as it's very pretty and not too long. Each time I've played it, it's been from start to finish in a single sitting. Having now heard a bit of Persona 5, I can't recommend 'last surprise' enough. Give it a listen.

Since you're often talking about learning about the limitations back in the day with things like 8-bit, 16-bit, etc. MIDI maybe it would be worth looking into some videos explaining how that influenced the composition? For example, I recently saw a video called "How Pokémon 8-bit music was influenced by classical music" by the channel David Bennett Piano, which went into this topic.

Sick stream man, love your takes! At 52:15, you mentioned the very delicate hi hat sounds from the drumming. As someone who has played through the game and listened to this very track a LOT, I had never ever noticed that before and yet you picked up on it immediately! Loved the stream and just as much that you uploaded it here! EDIT: Don't think too much of people that are unspeakably fast to point out stuff like "how do you not know this or that", there's bound to come such people even if you bring it up. I completely understand why you want to make it as obvious as possible, that you're only human like the rest of us - but people will come and go regardless. You're a very sincere and nice guy for bringing it up, and that by itself is enough!

so, for future streams i think it would be smart to put together a list of songs you want to listen to for the stream, maybe a forum the fans can fill out, so it can help negate half of the chat being "can you listen to this song". just a suggestion

Civilization 5 and 6 have good OSTs too, I'd definitely recommend those. Civ 6 has themes that progress through the eras, from basic Ancient Era themes all the way to Atomic Era themes that are more advanced but still retain the original melody.
