Love these! You're doing so well. I'd love at least 15-20 minutes; I was just getting into it and it's already over. Like eating the top layer of a tom pouce and just when you get to the best pudding part in the middle it's taken away from you.

Nice video, but big mistake to move to Amsterdam. The mentality is completely different than the rest of the country. I understand the work relation but still... Hema is a department store, one of the few left in The Netherlands. You can't compare to Target and then be disappointed. That doesn't make any sense. We do buy our main groceries once a week usually but fresh (and fresh means fresh here and is not a marketing slur that complies only with litigation), we do on a almost daily basis because bread, milk etc. isn't full of preservatives and simply goes bad or dry after a few days. With bread, that we use for toasties (which we call Tosti's) and bread crumps and people who are having a busy live will buy the bread once a week and put it in the freezer (you'll be surprised by that). To be honest, we Dutch do not get it that Americans can call something fresh and then you can keep it for weeks. And we do not keep eggs in the fridge. A chicken's butt is also not chilled and an egg is still in its package. Never make the mistake to compare The Netherlands to the indulgence of the US. It doesn't thrive here whatsoever. We are practical and down to earth people. Same with our clothing. We are not much interested in fashion persé, dont have 100 pair of shoes or 50 caps and then an area to display. We do dress up on occasion but not on a daily basis. Like high heals, forget it (specially with the old cobblestones). Same as Americans perceive us as rude because we do not adjust to the overly flowery speech Americans are used to. When we ask how you are doing, we are interested in the answer actually and it is not just a figure of speech. We are just straight forward and don't beat around the bush. When we are not interested, we are not interested. Many Americans think it is difficult to make friends because of that, but we just don't pretend that we do. Simple. But friends are friends in The Netherlands, not just acquaintances. And understand that the pretentious, flowery American way of communicating doesn't sit very well here either. The excuse is then that there is something wrong with us but in reality we do not like you. Just accept it. Please do not make the mistake as well that anything American is standard abroad. We (and most other Western countries) are simply not you and we do our own thing and don't consider your country as an example (a bad one maybe) or your president the leader of the free world while in reality you folks don't even manage to come close to what a democracy is supposed to be. A democracy is not only being able to vote (and you have even electorates) but "by the people, for the people", not for the corporates and proper healthcare and social facilities are against the order. BTW, colored contacts and false eyelashes (and anything plastic of that kind) are not really the thing here. In general, women here do not try to look like Kim Kardashian, fully painted. In the video and your clothing really stand out as Americans, even though your husband is Dutch I understand. I promise that will change pretty quickly. You will experience the leisure side of it shortly. For this random house stuff, go to "Action". Bed stuff you buy at "Beter Bed" and cheap food you go to "Nettorama". I do not know if available in your area. Like in most cities, in Amsterdam you have to start cycling (not biking). We don't go plane'ing or car'ing either. Wear socks when u cold at night and an extra blanket (preferably wool), but a heated blanket is very unhealthy. And English is not only NOT the first language. It is no language here at all, even though most of us speak it pretty well. Everything is in Dutch exclusively, except for the American amusement park called Amsterdam of course. And please, please, please, buy an ordinary coffee maker and do not buy these hugely overrated and overpriced outside coffees. You do not always have to walk around with a cup in one hand and a Gucci bag in the other. They are for tourists. All these "bla bla flavored" is just dumb. I know American culture see themselves as original but in reality everything is a mediocre copy of the European original and merely a variation of the same. You just switch the meat and sauce over and call it different or put the same thing on a different bun or on the BBQ. Whether you buy American pizza, burgers, taco's, etc., they all have the same ingredients over and over again. In The Netherlands they do not qualify as restaurants btw., not even close. And we do not cook burgers at home, neither do we have Taco Tuesdays and Pizza Fridays, unless we have kids and then even in moderation. Go to a butchers (or the bigger supermarkets) and see the variety of cheeses, meats (both for cooked meals and on bread 'spread"). See the variation any humongous choices in vegetables. Not everything is a small piece of broccoli or cauliflower with one's meal. We eat basically healthy meals, half the plate veggies, quarter meat and quarter potatoes, followed by dessert, sometimes soup as a starter. We avoid as much as possible (pre-)processed and MSG food. And we are dippers and not drowners when it comes to sauce(s). And do not mess around with our cheese. That is one of our national prides and we consider cheese sauce as an insult. You have a very nice apartment though and you look very prepared to adjust. The Dutch husband will make the transition smoothly. You will do well here. I mainly post this to give your American viewers a proper perspective. We are totally different from anything American (and their perceptions and expectations). Give it some time and wait till the first flowers sprout halfway March and everything will look so much different and hugely different. For sure I am gonna follow your channel. "Doei" is regional btw. Basically every city has its own dialect even if they are only 10-20km apart with their own words and customs. That is because we have centuries and centuries of history and culture and no ghosts in every house older than 40 years old still. No UFO's flying over either. Where I come from it is "houdoe" for example. Oh, and I think the 10-12 minute limit is a very good idea.

I appreciate the tips. But I am proud to be an American and I am not trying to “look” or “act” 100% Dutch because I am not. That doesn’t mean that I won’t appreciate and respect the culture, because I will… but I found this comment to be just bashing me and my culture. The US is a melting pot of many different nationalities and cultures and we do not need to bash one to appreciate the other.

@@kayshaynee Lol. I just wanted to post that you don't take my post too serious and, after watching your other video, you look very down to earth and will just fit in nicely. It was not about you to start with but the perception that it creates to American viewers. About bashing. You are correct. I am. But I watch CNN daily (I live abroad) and all I see is bashing among one selves, whether its heritage, culture, color or politics. Don't bash the Dutch guy that points it out. I never typed that you are trying to look or be Dutch. Just be yourself. I am not bashing you for sure. And culture, oh well, the lack of style is also a style.... (again, not personal).
@AlexK-yr2th18 минут бұрын
Oh. And stay yourself. Last thing I am trying to say is that you should change. I love opinions and perceptions, already subscribed to your channel. But Dutch love to disagree or be "het beste jongetje van de klas". I am no different... And my daughter also called Kayleigh, with the same Gaelic spelling.

There is a grocery store in the NL called EkoPlaza and it reminds me to Whole Foods but dutch ;) They have a yogurt to die for; I can’t remember the brand but the flavor is Stracciatella and it’s amazing. You can find it in the fridge section.

Ahhhh my husband was telling me about this store!! I’ll have to go and look for that yogurt… thank you😊
@AlexK-yr2thСағат бұрын
@@kayshaynee It is stracciatella (Italian for chocolate chip) KWARK and not yogurt from Optimel or Almhof (my favorite). Kwark is comparable to yogurt with a bacteria culture (but stopped) and more fluffy like in a light cheese cake, German style.

Again, basic American perception and mistake honestly, thinking living in Amsterdam will give much experience or information about The Netherlands. You obtained the wrong brochure. Don't look at the pics, but read the specs. They are simply not one and the same. Cultures in most of Europe are very localized, not separated by borders. Within an hour you are in Germany or Belgium for example and within the Netherlands there are so many cultures and dialects that are totally different. Like the language in the south is a lot closer to Flemish and in the east closer to German. People from Amsterdam region have even trouble understanding it. The food for example "onder de rivieren" (below the rivers) is complete different than in the Northern region. So is the attitude. You will learn nothing in Amsterdam about the Netherlands really and we consider it an American and expat enclave to be honest. And then Americans making videos about stroopwafels and bitterballen on the assumption that we have a similar junk food culture, doesn't help at all. Amsterdam is an American amusement park. The Netherlands isn't...
