I started off as a tech for 3 years on a rehab floor, then got my LPN and worked at a mental health clinic for about a year and half. I recently transitioned to RN in 2021 and am currently 8 months in as a new floor nurse on a med surg floor and I when I first started off I felt like didn’t I know a thing about being on the floor. 😭. With more experience on the floor it gets better. My anxiety isn’t nearly as high as it was when I first started.

i am 29 years old - turning 30 on January 1st. ive always wanted to be an RN IN A PSYCH WARD. ive always been interested in "why do you think that" or "what made you think that was a good idea"... cause everybody dont think the same. i believe everyone's mental is different, so i took some Psychology classes in high school. Teacher showed us a video of a woman with MPD switching &&ive been in love since. What makes each personality thrive or go and hide? Im currently a CNA but i plan to start my RN journey after my birthday. You made it sound so natural working as a RN. this gave me the push i know i needed. I started in the CV ICU and they just switched me to the Step Down Cardiac unit yesterday and everything that you’re saying is what I’ve been experiencing being on that unit. Some things I genuinely don’t know but sometimes my preceptor made it seem like it was a problem not knowing something. She said “I was okay not knowing stuff” which was far from the truth. The critical thinking skills, all of that, I experienced 😭 so I guess this will be a good thing! I’m disappointed but I think it will be for the best!

Girl, I’m SO glad I watched your video. You remind me so much of myself. I haven’t even completed my pre-reqs yet, so I’ve been watching a LOT of videos with tips and lessons about nursing. When you said that you care about the “crazy” patients, a light bulb went off. I have considered going into Cardiac, OBGYN, ER, or OP first, and then becoming either a mental health case manager or going to get my BS in Social Work so that I can open up a preventive and post-discharge counseling facility. I’m nervous about my future as I’m currently pregnant and already have one child, so I’ve been doing as much research as I can before I commit.

How do I know what's the task for that one patient... I wish there were outlines when it comes to the task and charting. I wish I could see steps on what to chart step by step. Please help. NURSING is my dream job, but I am so scared and confused.

So a little background, I started as an EMT For 8 years, then LPN for 8 years in occupational health and 2 years in subacute rehab facility, I got my RN-ADN and have been for one year in the subacute rehab before I transferred to the hospital on this Tele unit. @@SincerelyShannonSubcribe I went to TX ( before I got my license) found out in the big cities you need your BSN because of the magnet Hospital. So I think I find a place I like and stay.

I'm struggling on this med surg floor. I feel like they are more ready for me to get off orientation instead of teaching me. On my first day they tried to give me two patients. I'm like no I'm shadowing. I have never worked in a hospital. I feel like that's setting me up for failure. I feel like quitting already. I want to learn how to actually do and learn things and be a safe nuse. Any advice?
@SincerelyShannonSubcribe2 жыл бұрын
Talk with the floor manager and let her know your concerns. See if she is willing to ease you onto the floor instead just throwing you out there.

Would you recommend starting as a travel nurse right out of school?

Nope.

This video spoke to me lol especially when you spoke about blanking out during the COPD patient. That is totally me. I feel so stupid not thinking of basic knowledge things to do to help that I feel every nurse should know 😓 especially with no prior bedside experience before nursing, same as your experience. I kind of wish i did get some experience as a CNA or something. But this video made me feel a little better

I love this. I’m preparing to apply to nursing school. I’m curious do nurses eat their young? New subbie, and looking forward to following your nursing journey! I love your drapes btw, I have the same ones 😂

Shannon, thank you for this video!!!! Girl, this was needed, I'm so glad you filmed this. I'm still in nursing school and you've addressed all the fears I have, critical thinking skills, not knowing how to "nurse", being scared out of my mind, being afraid my patients will see I'm a baby nurse, and reject me...etc...How long was your orientation period? did you do a nurse residency program? If so, can you talk about that experience? thanks!
@SincerelyShannonSubcribe4 жыл бұрын
I’m glad this helped. My residency was 12 weeks. My program was just being with my preceptor that entire time. We had a few classes like IV’s and telemetry but it wasn’t real intense. I was so scared to be on my own. I was begging them to give me a few more weeks lol but they were like “ naw, time to clip those wings” lol

As a new grad during covid I can say for me a big learning experience is knowing my patients. Anything can happen and you have to know about your patient to give background for rapid response etc bedside nursing is no joke!
@SincerelyShannonSubcribe4 жыл бұрын
Yes! Such a good point. I remember my first code the beginning of the shift; only knew what I got in report. Luckily I had my preceptor, but I was like never again lol

Thanks for this video! 💜 It was well needed for me since I'll be graduating with my BSN in December and I'm very over critical of myself and worried about how to "nurse". I actually got an externship on a cardiac/tele unit...I'm excited, nervous, and overwhelmed already and I haven't even started yet! 😅

This video is exactly what I needed. Like other people have been commenting, I feel the exact same way. I'm in week 9 of my first nursing job at a Cardiac Surgical Stepdown. The fear of the unknown feels so debilitating. You sharing this has made me feel so much better that I'm not alone. I cannot thank you enough!!
