I agree. My parents both had good jobs and my dad would do about any hustle on the side from buying and reselling cars, doing odds and ends construction work/roofing and such when he wasn't driving a tractor trailer. When I was 10 they bought 1/2 a 20 acre section of land and our neighbors bought the other 10. The following year they bought the land from our neighbor for all 20 acres. We cleared the unwarned thorns and brush, cut trees and sent them to the lumberyard for rough cut materials to build the barn. We put up fencing, bought a farm tractor to till the land and do other work. Planted grass seed for hay, bought cattle and raised them over the winter. We didn't live on the land so I had to walk about a mile each way from fall, through winter, and into the spring. Each day I'd feed the cattle hay. There was a natural spring on the land so there was constant clean water. 14 years later my parents build a house there. It was very hard work, but it was a dream childhood that made me the man I am today. I really wished I could have done something similar for my daughter. I'm so happy you're able to work out your dream and live it. I'm quite happy with my life, but envious of yours. It's an amazing dream and I hope it all works out well. From Eastern USA.

This brought back memories of our experience when we decided to leave Ireland to move to France. In 2019 We fell in love with the first house we viewed after using a strict criteria to eliminate properties that didn't meet our needs. The purchase completed in early March 2020 and we returned to Ireland and one of then strictest lockdowns in Europe. It took almost two years before we were able to make the move. Enjoy the ride. I look forward to following your adventures.

May I ask why you left Ireland? 🙂 I'm Swedish, living in Norway and Ireland is one of the countries we are considering for some time, but the housing crisis is crazy and may make it impossible. Otherwise, (northern) Spain is most likely our goal, but they have other issues.
@lavignemorte Жыл бұрын
@Aethuviel Hi, there were a few reasons altogether. Although I have Irish nationality I was born in England and had spent half my life there. When we moved back to Ireland in 2014 we were never really accepted. Getting work is extremely difficult and salaries are dreadful even with 20 years of IT experience. The weather was also a huge factor because I have horses. 6 months of the year my horses lived in bog-like conditions and just managing them was getting tiresome. This is the west of Ireland so although beautiful it is wet, very wet. Another factor was also there was nowhere to ride horses apart from the road. They don't have any bridleways or accessible riding routes. Getting permission to ride in the government owned forests is impossible. Don't get me started on health care either. France had more to offer for our lifestyle.

Hello Ricky thanks for the invite. I follow the Indie Project and from them and now you I can see more of Portugal Life. I'm a native Californian who transported to Ohio 32+ years ago for reasons such as yours. Watching life in Portugal is refreshing for many reasons but what stands out to me is the countryside and climate are much like Southern California where I'm from. As a young adult my leaving home was via the US Navy taking me to Europe as part of a NATO Squadron. It was that time I grew to love travel within the North Atlantic area. Loved the UK, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands,etc with a quick passthrough the Azores for fueling our Navy ship. I'm excited to have you share your journey and look forward to starting your lives over. I can identify with that from our journey from California to Ohio with the first two years a challenge for sure. Welcome to KZbin Family, Blessings

What a delightful introduction to your wonderful channel! 😊 Thank you for sharing your lives in beautiful Portugal with us all. How exciting! 🤗 I'm a 64 year old man, born and raised in London, where I have lived my whole life. But strangely, I have never felt "British!" A big surprise was about to greet me! I very recently discovered I am of Portuguese origin and that I have an enormous amount of Portuguese ancestry. Interestingly, when I visited Portugal in 2018, I immediately felt at home therein. I'm of very limited means, and have a few significant health issues, but regardless, in late November 2023, I applied for Portuguese Citizenship through the Portuguese Sephardic Descent route. Having said that, in January, new, far more demanding laws were introduced in Portugal putting my application in jeopardy unfortunately. But let's see! Life has shown me to expect the unexpected! For such is this Mystery! Such is this utterly wondrous Mystery! 🤗 The very loveliest of blessings to you, your partner and your beautiful dog, today, each day forever and always.

Here to say...."Hi!"". It will be an interesting project for sure. I will be following your achievements. Portugal is amazing and being rural in Portugal is fantastic. You get the sense of your own space and privacy but at the same time you still so close of urban centres and all amenities in case you wish or need to commute which is very reassuring imo.

I just turned 83 yesterday, retired in Costa Rica from the USA. I have been watching your videos for some time and decided to learn about you two and what the happenstance was getting you there and to remodel that stone house. We were living in California and were not happy with the way things were. I was retired and was remodeling the house we had just bought, then my wife was still working but also wanted away from the problems of the area. We choose Costa Rica and moved 18 years ago. I think it is great that you have done what you are doing at your ages. I will make a few comments on what you have, keep on keeping on.😀

Hi Ricky and Victoria I stumbled on your channel just a couple of days ago and believe you me I have fallen in love with you both and of course Teddy and Poppy. I am not a person that sits in front of TV and watches any kind of movies or series as I have worked in a hospitality industry for the last 11 years and have just left the industry due to many financial issues. But you both have given me a new lease on life and as well as Victoria I enjoy gardening and I am learning along the way as much as she is. You Ricky are a godsend as the skills you have and even though you might get something wrong you are so precise in want you do and having had a Dad that was a concreter and you are blessed with some real talent. I have watched a good part of your videos in one night as I could not stop watching and just about did an all nighter. No regrets as I took me to your channel and I have started from the beginning and have been going down one by one. I already have seen some latest ones but I had to go back and watch them all. Keep being beautiful as you are. You are two beautiful souls and the world is a much better place just because you two are part of it. This world is in such need of people like both of you that bring back life to the simple things as we are so driven by technology (which do not get me wrong is needed like in what you do as your message would not get around) that balancing it is a struggle for many. We really have to stop and smell the roses and that is what comes from your videos. It is like there is a pause and who is watching is coming into your little world and smelling the roses with you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Carla from Australia

Great intro mate! 36/42 couple here… two kids 7/6 looking to move out into central Portugal from Manchester. Got about £60k to spend and hoping for somewhere with a few hectares and a a registered ruin… as far as I can see that’s the min I can get away with for a relatively unchallenged future. I worry with just lands we would be turfed out eventually. What’s your thoughts ? Would love to see it from the perspective of someone like yourself out there doing it. Cheers mate
@LifebyLiving2 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the area tbh. Some councils are more lenient than others. But I think you’re wise to find somewhere with a registered building & with a habitation license exemption certificate that states the building to be pre-1952. That way you know you’re legal & you’re protected. Wishing you & your family the best of luck! Thanks for the support 👍🏼
@kohtime2 жыл бұрын
@@LifebyLiving thank you so much, I will be following closely… hopes were to get a ruin and “slowly” rebuild it while building “temporary” accommodation…. Do you see much hassle going this route? Is it likely people access your land to question you…. My hopes were as long as their was a “legal” right to be there ( pre 1951, hab exempt, registered) no one would have any motivation to see our ancillary buildings and question their use… I’d really appreciate your opinion on this
@donnacosta56332 жыл бұрын
I'm portuguese born & bred in Central Portugal and I can answer your questions. 1) The laws about the use of land are the same all over the country, but they are implemented by each municipality and some are more strict then others. Each property is different and the right to live on the property depends on several factors. If the property has a ruin that was used as a dweling and is REGISTERED at the Land Registry Office (Consevatoria) as "urban" it is more likely that you can get a licence to renovate the property to be a home. But there are exceptions... because of the high risk of wildfires, some municipalities may not allow the renovation of ruins that are surronded by forest or considered to be in high risk areas, even if they are registered as "urban". The idea is that they are responsible for people's safety. 2) The correct thing to do is to check with the local municipality (Camara Minicipal) what you can do and can't with a specific property. Ask the seller for a copy of the Caderneta Predial of the property and take it to the Camara with you, so that they can give you an answer for that specific property. 3) When you embark on the renovation of any property or ruin, you need to submit a professionally drawn plan to the Camara Municipal, and wait for approval. After approval (planning permission) you ask a "licença de obra" to start building within a timeframe (can be extended multiple times to several years). 4) After finishing your renovation, the camara sends inspectors to check that your renovation has been done to standard and signs off the papers for the all important "licença de habitacao" which is like the ID of the house. 5) The "licença de habitacao" gives you the right to use the house for habitation, for yourself, to rent out, or to sell it as habitation. If you renovate without any approval you cannot sell it and might have to demolish any work already done on top of a heavy fine. 6) Officals will inspect your property at different times: the architect will photograph the land as it is and submit photos with drawings of planned renovation. The council will check the architect's drawings and will make a topographical survey (compulsory, I think). The architect will inspect throughout the works. The council inspectors will visit at least twice, more if they are not happy with what's going on. 7) You may be able to get permission to live in a campervan, tent, or mobile structure if you are doing the work yourself and need to be on site, but that permission is only temporay till your renovation is done. 8) Do not start any renovation work without permission, it could end up a very costly mistake. 9) Portuguese people are very friendly towards newcomers, but they are also very curious. If you don't follow the rules they'll report you. 10) People will say things like, so and so have had no problems... YET... Some Camaras are not very strict at the begining because they know they can apply higher fines to advanced illegal work later. Win, win for them! Portuguese planning laws are similar to UK's. If you can't do something in the UK you probably can't do it in Portugal either. Better be legal and avoid a lot of stress.
@donnacosta56332 жыл бұрын
Suggestion: With £60k you can afford a well located property with an habitable house and some land to grow vegetables, something like 2,000 to 3,000 sq meters. You'd be able to grow enough for a family in such area if you've got plenty of water. WATER is far more important than a big area. Look up "Girl Meets Farm" to see what type of property I mean. There is a lot of abandoned land everywhere in Portugal and should you want / need to farm more, or graze animals, you could ask any owner near you to farm on their land for... FREE! Most would be very glad to have their property maintained at no cost to them.
@kohtime2 жыл бұрын
@@donnacosta5633 ty for your well thought out response. I have to query a few things. Isn’t it true that ruin pre 1951 does not require a habitation licence at all? The fact I can go out now and buy a “illegal” non registered building seems to show that a property CAN be sold whether it legal or not. I understand it may not be able to be sold as “a home” and cannot be mortgaged but still they are for sale. My belief was that the building HAS to be registered but it does not have to be previously designated as urban if pre 1951. I also see may others, often in prominent positions completing works themselves that would mean they would not get the habitation licence issued as they are not Portuguese registered builders. I am a builder myself so wouldn’t be needing to hire outside workers. In all honesty Donna I can buy a ruin with that much land in the north of the uk so it doesn’t seem feasible that for 60k gbp all I can have is 3000 sq m in Portugal. I don’t want a “habitable” home as I want a project for myself but importantly want more land. You also say close to people… I think sometimes Portuguese have a different impression of what we want… I live currently surrounded left right and center with people I don’t know and don’t want to live on their lap… we want somewhat isolation from others.
