I think the first pair is wearable if you feel comfortable with the fit in the crotch. Maybe if you don't want to wear them outside, use them as shorty pajama bottoms. Comfort both physically and emotionally is most important. That may sound weird, but sometimes things fit on me, but I just don't like them, so that is what I meant by emotionally comfortable. I think the pandemic made alot of us become more introspective and really learned alot about who we are inside. What really makes us happy, content, what our needs truly are and how to get them met on our own or within our immediate family. That, for me, included clothing. I really enjoyed this video and it came at a great time as I am just starting to work on my shorts, only I wear them much longer. I'm so glad you addressed the riding up issue, as that happened to me alot last year, so now I know what to do!!! Thank you so much!

I so understand the bathing suit problem of your daughter! I was short, skinny and a 28D at 15, with a long body. Bathing suits were a nightmare and my Mom luckily could make me one. However, in the 70's when I was young, finding a modest pattern that looked youthful was also nearly impossible! Love the video, I have the allegro but haven't made it yet, this will really help.

Oh they are all so nice & cute. I made myself a pants mannequin form while we were in due to COVID. I really don’t have any one who could help me with fitting and really got exhausted and bum knee would really give me a fit with pinning. I made the form by wrapping myself in slightly dampened packing tape. I let it dry and marked areas waist, hip, knee & bellybutton. Cut it off me and then I had to put some areas back where they had been cut. It really works great. I still try them on myself a time or two but my pants form has really helped give me a good idea what needs to be done on my pants. Hubby helped me a lot making it.

Great tutorial! I am definitely going to try shortening the rise on my next project. This is the main reason why I don’t make pants-there is always a bunch of excess fabric in the front. I just didn’t know what I needed to do to fix it.

This is a super helpful video for me (and I'll be referring back for sure). I'm a visual learner and seeing the full process from diagnosing to adjusting the pattern makes all the difference. The next time you do full length pants consider this same approach. I worked on this shorts pattern last summer (and another full length pant pattern) but gave-up in frustration ... now I want to try again. Thx!

I really was, "Wow, the last pair is totally better than the first two!" Wonderful tutorial. And, the skirt is great. The first pair, the denim one, you are definitely being too hard on yourself. Maybe not wear them when you want to really be stylin' it, but they are perfectly cute on you. I would not add the drawstring, though, because I always think they make the waist look like it's sticking out more.

Whitney, I just can't thank you enough. As long as I'm below size 16 the rise fit perfectly; but anything above, the rise is way too long as I am 5'7"with a crotch depth of 9". Have been sewing for a very long time, but just couldn't wrap my head around the difference in the back length after a front adjustment, since, I usually only need it on the front. Funny the things that I have overlooked. The other method I've used is making a mockup and tucking under excess at elastic at the waist, then marking the waistline below the elastic. The "dip" in the front between the side seams is quite noticeable. Love to watch you work.

The waistband method is great way to tweak that excess fabric issue once the pattern is cut out!

This has been very helpful. Just seeing your changes a bit at a time has helped me to understand the why and how. Style Arc pants fit me well, I do make some small changes but its a bit hit and miss. I'd like to make more pants/shorts so thank-you for this.

I would definitely wear the blue shorts!! I love them, and they look pretty nice. :+) I like all three pair, but the fit is better with the last pair-but they are all wearable!! Only 15 minutes in and I’m guilty of overfitting trousers. I’ll tweak everything. I’ve just realised this summer that now I just shorten the front rise it brings the back rise too far forward - so adding to the front inseam/curve would help. Lovely to see Gidget.

Enjoy this fitting series. IMO for each pair 1 thru 4: Pair One: WEAR 'EM. So nicely made and look better than anyone buying ready-made. Pair Two: CUTE. I concur with Whitney about the need to shorten the rise. Pair Three: NICE FIT! However, I would prefer a little wider leg with the cuff. Pair Skort Four: I like 'em. The color is perfect for hiking especially if you need to sit on the ground. Could you see that in white or tan? --Good thinking, Whitney. Enjoyed this fitting series. ~ L

To be perfectly honest Whitney, I like the blue denim shorts better than the brown linen shorts! I do think it's the depth of the front that's the issue on the brown ones. (I've only got to the brown shorts in the video so far lol) If you don't need the draw string to hold them up just put an 8" shoe lace in across the back between the two holes and tie a bow. No sense in putting a full one in when you don't need it. Could you not have laid the pocket pieces lined with the top seam to the notch and just trim the side down so you don't lose length in the pocket, just slightly narrowing it at the bottom? Thank you for going through both processes with the front and back rise! SOOOO helpful! I think the darker blue shorts are PERFECT! I have a question regarding athletic skorts/shorts, I know you made the golf skirt what pattern for shorts would you recommend for 'restrictive' clothing policies for golf courses? My daughter is getting into golfing with her fiance and wore a paperbag topped pair of shorts and was told they were not appropriate! She is like her momma but much much smaller, she's pear shaped so anything she buys doesn't fit in waist and gapes at the back so I wanted to surprise her with a pair of golf shorts that actually fit but since I don't golf I'm not sure which pattern would work best.

That’s crazy that she was told paper bag waisted shorts weren’t appropriate! I’ve golfed most of my life and have been to some top notch courses and would have never considered them inappropriate. As far as golf skorts, I’ve used a running skort from Jalie, the Belize Skort from Itch to Stitch and the Pace Skirt from GreenStyle creations. They all have made great golfing skorts! If she wants just shorts, I think the Chi Town Chinos or the Upland Trousers made in a stretch athletic woven would make great golf shorts!

I think the first light denim pair is wearable. It looks fine with the shirt tucked out and covering the waist.......the bottom of the shorts look good. Thanks for the progression. I always have to make adjustments on pants patterns and I like the tip not to do too many things at once. I have the opposite problem in that I have to add 1 to 1 1/2 inches in the rise of the pants and sometimes need more in the back than the front. Next time I will do the hinge adjustment you showed.

I need help to figure out how to tackle fitting issuses. The big one is I have to much fabric between my bust and shoulder. And neck can be somewhat big. Do you or anyone know how to address this. A lot of fitting book do not address this.

It sounds like it could be a couple of things. You, most likely, need a petite adjustment between shoulder and bust and you either need to grade from a smaller size in the neck to a larger size by the bust, or pick a smaller size pattern and then do an FBA to get to the necessary bust size. If you're interested, I run a pattern fitting class (virtually) twice a year and the next session will be opening up in August!

The grading out for a thick waist is so helpful. I am never quite sure where to start the transition. Once menopause happened my waist basically disappeared 😕

I made the9” shorts from some leftover tencel chambray. I suggest interfacing and finishing all edges. Boy did this stuff fray. Hopefully your chambray won’t fray as much as mine did

Just finding this tutorial. I never would have thought to hinge at center back. I’ve been hinging the the front at the side seam to shorten the front rise but that seems to put excess fabric in the crotch area. Plus I tend to have to lower it so much that it does some interesting angles that I have to adjust. I’m going to try this the next time.

I think you have done well given the adjustments you have had to do. How about a loose shirt a little longer to cover up the the top of the shorts would make you feel better about it. So shorts, a sleepless camisole with a loose fitting top over that and just button the lower part of the shirt???

the pale blue shorts are definitely wearable. can you give more tips on widening a leg? same amount front and back of leg?

Typically, the back leg of a pattern is a bit wider than the front. However, if you are widening it, a good rule of thumb is to widen them equally (but the back will still be wider than the front). The biggest thing to keep in mind, is that balance is important so be sure to add equally amounts to the inseam and the side seam.

I’ve been cutting the waistband off a lot of my shorts and putting a yoga waistband on them. Love it! Was thinking you could do that on the denim ones to take care of the bulky waistband.

Wondering if you would have a pants sloper then you have the exact and perfect design and fit for all patterns? Take out your sloper master pattern then lay over commercial pattern. Voila. Will fit as you want on the first go.

While I think you could copy the crotch curve of your sloper in most situations, because each pattern is drafted on a different block (and with differing ease,etc.) laying your sloper on top of a pattern wouldn’t always work. It might, but I think it may end up being more frustrating than anything. The more you fit different patterns, the more you’ll learn your “typical” fit issues, which will make fitting a new pattern easier each time.

Thanks for showing all this! #3 is pretty good. Been working on shorts myself. Long process! Three things to consider: Perhaps make them very slightly less tapered to give more space between you and them? More slenderizing? I would scoop a little more in the back where it looks like it might be cutting in. The side seam seems to pull forward at the top, which in a busy world just hardly matters, but could you add to the front/subtract from the back to fix it? Thanks for all the work.

I think the side seam pulling to the front has more to do with how well I evenly distributed the fabric around the elastic, but if you have issues with non elastic waist pants, you could definitely do that alteration!

Looks goodbut I would extend the inseam. Thank you for showing the alterations. The brown shorts looks better. Amazing what a little added in the inseam will do. Fits better. I hate it when your short ride up your inner thigh and you are constantly pull down If you expand your legs on the inner thigh, would that also, give more room so it would not ride up?

It is amazing what adding just that 1/4” to the inseam can do! Oddly enough, I’m finding that my Allegros do not ride up in between the thighs when I walk (and that typically happens to me) and I think it’s because of the tapered leg.

they are completely wearable - but if you don't love them, pass them on. someone would be delighted to find these at a resale store. and isn't it great to use scraps of something for your first try? no cost mock up. it's perfect. and I agree about not showing your daughter - but I hope you will show how you adjust the pattern for her different body type. I carry any weight in my middle, so showing how you grade your patterns up at the waist helps me a lot. Is the fabric for that tee shirt still available?

Have you considered making her or yourself the Ester Gertie swimsuit?? It looks like there’s some good bust support and even though it’s vintagey I think the right fabric could totally work for a younger girl.

This is so helpful - Thank you! I do have a question - what do you do about the grainline when removing/adding length to only the front or back? From the video, using the « pivot » method really messed up the grainline.

I totally forgot to mention that! Use the original grain line from the bottom half of the shorts and redraw it to the top.
