I truly hope you are doing well on your journey and send you some stranger internet hugs for it! I know it sounds cliché but we all need to focus on our mind, body and spirit is some way, shape or form. In working on your body try not to neglect the other two. All three will help you in your personal relationships and how you interact with the world. I've been doing lots of introspection lately, looking backward and forward, but hearing and seeing how other people and friends deal with challenges is inspiring. I'm 49 now and realising I need to do something physical if I plan to be fit and active in the next phase of my life. I teach the violin and at my age I'm REALLY starting to feel if you don't use it you loose it, and I'm NOT ready for that! So good luck, and keep blazing your own trail, its never too late to start the fire! 💗🔥

I started training my flexibility at 21, and was able to touch my toes with straight knees at 22. Took another year until I got my flat splits but they weren't square. At that age it was so easy to lose flexibility. Now I'm 30 and if I don't stretch consistently I lose it within a week.

That's strange. I'm 30 and had my first baby this January. Before I got pregnant it took me about 2 months to get my middle splits then I stopped stretching a few months before I got pregnant. A month ago I decided to test my flexibility and I can still do most things like splits and back bends but not the middle splits.

Thank you for this!!! I’m a dancer and growing up I used to religiously stretch and force myself into positions because I really wanted to gain flexibility. Being young my hard work definitely paid off quickly. However at 18 I trained in fulltime dancing where we focussed so much on strength. I began doing cross training which involved all strengthening too. Then my body just tightened and stiffened!!! It didn’t help that I didn’t stretch as much I was before too. Then I began stretching more as the year went on but then I stopped dancing that year after and went to university where I mainly just sat all day and I could no longer do the splits to save my life Coming back to pursuing dancing again at 21, I have finally come back to stretching and hoping I can return the level of flexibility I had at 15/16 years old whilst still also strengthening my body. Thanks for this video! It gave me re-assurance and motivation to continue my daily stretching. Slowly but surely!!! I also watched this video whilst stretching!

Hooray! I’m so happy your inspired again to train again. I always like to think that we never lose anything: it’s sitting in the attic, and we need to dust and sweep! Your body remembers, but the strategy needs to change. We might not able to get warm as quickly, but we can still make it happen!

I’m in my mid-30s, I also come from a non-expert dance/gymnastics background, and in college I worked up to my splits-so I know what kind of work you’re talking about. I always enjoy hearing stories about the journey that takes you to your heart's desire. I also began dancing at age 3. I found dance was my favorite through the years, primarily for the art, the movement, and there was no talking necessary. It was for me. The more introverted me became the more extroverted me. The more modest me became the more free-to-be me. Dance taught me the basics, experience taught me the rest. I wanted to be a professional dancer and became one. Traveled the world dancing and living. What better career I cannot imagine. After retiring I was already certified in yoga and health and taught full time. Menopause entered my life at age 44 and by 45 my body started changing and continued to do so for 11 years. I miss teaching, I miss dancing, but, I have to accept life and all of its changes and challenges. At age 56 I am finding a different, comfortable, in-my-own-skin, and it's just as beautiful, if not more. Enjoy all of the opportunities, advancements, setbacks...the waves keep coming. Never forget: Flexibility of mind is also important. 🌿🕊️💕🌍 Patience and practice, and safety, will take you places. 👍

The training part is really key. I'm a spiritual gypsy so it can be a spiritual practice, but for a long time it was my main form of exercise and then when I started riding and jumping horses (at 37, yikes), it was a way to train a whole new level of flexibility and build strength in a way that wouldn't interfere with the strength I was building in the saddle. I thought I had strong legs and bendy hips, and I mostly do, I have crap external rotation, but man, equestrians have CRAZY strong legs and flexibility, especially jumpers. So strong they (and me for a long time) ride and jump without stirrups. I haven't been on a horse since 2019 since I rarely ride in January or February at my current barn and then COVID. Rude awakening coming my way soon. And I agree about having to seek out specific hand balance training for inversions and handstands. so. many. workshops with people who would breakdown the shoulder and arm and core action.

I started yoga after my 1st marathon at 45 hoping to run a 2nd--that didn't come to past but I stayed with yoga and now at 60 I just started aerials. Surprisingly, I am usually the flexy-ist student in most my classes--I can oversplit and full forward fold with foot behind head and king pigeon. I didn't really concentrate on it but improved gradually over years of consistent practice along with strength and mobility from handstand drilling. Also, a shout out to Body&Pole--love that studio and thanks for the inspiration!!

Such a great vid! I am 31 as well and come from a dancing background! We have similar stories in that I dropped my dancing / flexibility after college and it wasn't till I started Aerial Silks this year that I realised how important my flexibility was again! Your point on yoga was interesting too. I never really "got it" as I was more about the pilates (active strength) and gymnastics / flexibility. However with yoga becoming ever popular and trendy I thought maybe I was just not appreciating the flexibility push it gives you - but it really doesn't I feel. Not in the way a dance class or contortion class would. Being a bit older and still pushing your flexibility have you had any injuries? My hamstrings are giving me far more grief the older I get!
@aliciaarcher6 жыл бұрын
+MissEm23 Thank you for watching!!! I did undergo a neck injury as of late, and have no idea how it happened! I was stretching, and did my usual warmup, and bang! Neck pain so severe I had to visit the chiropractor. I will say, that being older forces me to be ultra adamant about warming up and doing more active drills to get the muscles ready!

You're really inspirating because I started the same way and I felt lack of techniques too even if I danced my whole life and I saw so many friends doing what they like for living and I felt stuck, I decided to give me a chance to do what I love too... well I haven't finished your video yet but still I want to thank you already for giving hope to people. *Love* Magou.

Your first dance place sounds just like where I started, sadly it really set me back as I fed everything into a place that gave me nothing but temporary skills that could not be applied to later dances. No names were given to moves, no one on one help was shown and there was just no way any of it would be applicable in my later dance life. To all moms with daughters dreaming up dance carriers, these places are nice but if your kid looks like they may have a vested interest the best thing is to invest on a good place. Please, it helps so much later.

I am 21 and I have never been flexible 😭 I can’t even sit criss cross comfortably. So I’m working on stretching. Watching for motivation. I did yoga for little while and it never helped at all cause everyone else was able to do the positions already. There was no one on one help or anything. So hoping I can achieve these things on my own. Gaining the discipline to stretch daily

oH mY gOD :) I Have been watching your makeup tutorial videos for like more than a year now, I think, and I have just now watched this video :) and came to realize that we have a few things in comment. I used to dance as well, small studios here and there in Virginia, and Massachusetts. I also had the opportunity to study at Alvin Ailey for a summer intensive, say in year 1998 :) Long story short, I'm now 46, haven't dance in years because of my joint pain dues to having gout....I have been working in the beauty industry for more than 20 years. I mostly do eyelash extensions now for a living. I also do makeup as a side gig. And of course, I think I am a cosmetics hoarder ... But I love it. So, my spouse and I have moved to Asia for almost 2 years now, and are living in Cambodia at the moment. I am very very enviously of all of the new makeup that you could get in the US, things like Pat Mcgrath, Danessa Myricks, etc. Those are all the luxury items that are very difficult for me to get to now..... Love your videos and your honest opinions! Also keep up the good work! Thank you for sharing!!

Omg! Thank you for this video! I’ve been struggling for a really long time to achieve my flexibility and sometimes I catch myself thinking about all those myths that come with it: that at some age you should not be able to do it anymore, or that is something of the structure of your body, and sometimes all we need to know is someone that have been in the same place as we are! ❤️ Also, could you do a video of the stretch routine of yours?

There's an awesome video by David Swensen I think called "Yoga Ruins Your Life." And while you call it and study it as contortion and I call it and study it as yoga, it is, essentially same/same, at least for my kind of yoga, which progresses to something like 100 handstands and the most pretzel forms. I think hip work, backbends and inversions, especially handstands, are mentally and emotionally transformative. I recently came across the first picture of me doing a handstand against a wall like 6 years ago. And man the difference between me at 35.5 when I started yoga, 38 when I did my first handstand, and 43 are intense. I'm preparing myself to walk back some commitments to rededicate myself to finishing the first series and it does in fact dominate your life for a time and then you can chill into it. If I am doing sort of basic strength and flexibility yoga, it's not as extreme, but the deep backbends, drop backs, inversions, those really do dominate life and demand a fairly intense focus (And a lot of ashtanga practitioners study with circus performers to get to the third level).

I was waiting for this. I live in NY and was looking around and have no idea where to start. Im not so much interested in yoga but deftly the stretching. can you recommend a decent/not too expensive studio to start? I use to be ver flexible when I was younger and danced for many years(modern/hip hop). I would love to start a stretching journey. YOUR INSTAGRAM IS EVERYTHING!! OK I'll read the comments. I think this is great content for your channel. Your personality is so radiant!!

SO continuing from my reply above, ha! Thank you tons for watching and for your support! I started at Body and Pole--they offer flexibility classes at $40 a class and becomes cheaper per class in a package. Also look into Aerial Arts NYC and Circus Warehouse. I also train with Olga Karmasnky--she does privates and semi-privates.

Hi there! I have been watching a lot of dance videos and together with this video it really inspired me to get back into it. However I used to do hip-hop and now Im interested in ballet and contemporary. Do you think I could start and still be any good even though Im "already" 21 years old? Thank you for the motivation and inspiration
@aliciaarcher6 жыл бұрын
Hi Catarina! Thank you for watching!!! It was a conversation I had to have with myself and it was tough. As passionate as I was about ballet, I knew I wasn’t going to be a ballerina. I started too late and attending Ailey wasn’t optimal for that path. That didn’t mean I couldn’t enjoy it! I still love ballet, and mostly I love to dance. Even though you’re starting at 21, you still have a passion to dance. And sure, maybe you won’t be in Swan Lake. But you can still strive for excellence in the class room. And who knows! Maybe you’ll find yourself in some killer contemporary choreography!

Hi. I just wanted to say that everything is possible. Its never to late to start. I started at 19 with classical ballet and now 6 months later I am dancing at a professional academy 6 days a week. Everything is possible. As long as you put your mind to it. I mean the joffrey ballet trainee program you can audition for at even the max which is 24 years old! Anything is possible. It will just be really hard but its possible!

Most western yoga classes have nothing to do with yoga to be honest. It’s more an ego trip for people to show how they can bend and balance and stuff, nothing to do with their connection to the divine. I think Ballet and dance in general is more yoga than their so called “yoga classes” as the skill and connection one finds when one performs their art is more moving and one experiences the divine connection within themselves, and that’s what yoga actually means.
@aliciaarcher6 жыл бұрын
The connection with the audience, and a performer’s vulnerability is definitely something that can be understood/felt as spiritual. From a practical standpoint, and what you described, yoga is not a performing art and that’s what it has evolved into. Many can disagree, but that’s why I love contortion, because that is an art form that since its beginning, has been taught for centuries to be on a stage.

I’m 13 and I love dancing and since I wasn’t flexible I figured i could only do hip hop. whenever I have a mindset of flexibility I always lose it whenever I take one class of stretching
@tinaangel70556 жыл бұрын
how many hours did u spend practicing contortion?
@aliciaarcher6 жыл бұрын
+Tina Angel I look to spend at LEAST an hour working on contortion. Ideally it would be 3, if you factor in a good warmup. If I’m short on time, I’ll do something light that will keep me mobile.

Hello. How do you search for a flexibility class that is with a professional stretch coach vs. just a class offered at a local dance studio by a dance teacher not really trained in intensive stretching? It would be great to find a stretch coach like the ones serious ballerinas or gymnasts have. Is contortion training expensive?
@aliciaarcher8 жыл бұрын
I google "Flexibility class (enter your city)" and studios that offer will show up--I can recommend what we have here in NYC--where do you live? The best way to know for sure is word of mouth--if someone you know took class at a studio that you're wondering about, then I would inquire. It all depends who is teaching when it comes to price. My coach charges $60 for my flex partner and I. A private might be $100, depending if you have to pay for the space fee.

+kinkysweat Im so glad I came arose this video 😄. I live in NYC. I actually danced professionally from the ages of 16-19, and had been dancing from the age of 3. I am now 24 and I must say even attempting to get back into the groove is so hard now that I'm out of practice. It may all be subconscious, but I feel so out of my league especially because I'm no longer flexible. I'd love to get back into dance - for recreational purposes - but I would love to work on my flexibility and strength...do you have any recommendations?

Oh Yes! Body and Pole (27th St. x7th and 6th avenues) Aerial Arts NYC (in the 50's on the east side) Circus Warehouse (Long Island City) The Muse (Brooklyn) Body and Pole and Aerial Arts have top notch teachers that specialize in flexibility and contortion. Look out for Isaac Pena, Olga Karmansky, and Allison Schieler. Anything you learn, remember the drills and practice on your own. Every little bit helps!

Hi!! Love this. I'm a dancer/dance teacher and I've been told my whole life that when you get older you can't get more flexible. It was so discouraging. What's your best tips for training back flexibility? I feel like I have to take it super slow or my back starts getting "crunchy," or some days I have it and then the next few I lose it? Any one else experience this?
