Hey Julia, funny that you mentioned that, I remember seeing a video a while back ( u triggered a certain memory) it was Captain Jo. He's video was about just that. Why your type of airplane takes on some " extra fuel"

Any aircraft - especially large commercial - must be on a "stabilized approach" in order to safely land. If the approach is not stabilized then the Captain/FO will hit the TOGA (Go Around) and attempt another landing. All instrument approach plates have a specific "Go Around Procedure" that is followed. Winds are the primary reason for executing a Go Around. Nothing out of the ordinary and crews practice the Go Around procedure in the flight simulators as part of regular training.

I have seen videos of high wind events (like a hurricane) start to lift parked airliners off the ground. It sounds like what the captain was saying is there was possibly too much lift to land safely.

@@JettingJulia- As you may recall, I work at GEG and see flight crews daily heading for their hotel shuttle. What's caught my eye is that there are more and more women on the flight deck, which has traditionally been male dominated. I'm really impressed with this trend, and actually tickled to see it happening. IBME that once women are trained properly, they often tend to actually be better than men in many situations, primarily because of the way your brains are wired. Thus, thanks for sharing this odd but occasional and "exciting" part of flying, and mentioning talking to the gal from the flight deck about it after - that's what really caught my attention! As always, Cheers from GEG ❣

I wanted to tell you I appreciate you and all flight attendants out there! All my years of flying, I've only experienced one go-around. We were on final approach into O'Hare with gear down when suddenly the engines revved up, the gear was raised and we quickly ascended. I was a pretty nervous flyer in those days and the first thing I thought of was a near miss (hit). I looked around not at the flight attendants but at the other passengers to see if anyone was panicking but, fortunately, no one was so, with my heart in my mouth, I settled down and eventually we landed on our second try. The FO came on before we landed and explained that we were deemed too close to the plane landing ahead of us and therefore instructed to go around.

Great vlog as always! THIS is your first incident after all these years as F/A. Ok. Statistics will hit you in the head from time to time. This is what has happend to ME since 1978 as a stand by pax of what I can remember… 1: struck by Lightning Three times. 2. bird strike on a 747. New aircraft took 24h to fly in. 3. one burst tire. Full Emergency landing. X number of Go-arounds due to weather, wind, snow, and snow. Divertions due to WX. Heavy delay due to closed airspace because of air show. Lol! That was in ALC. Keep up the good work. Be safe!

Hi, Go arounds are so routine and practiced all the time, they are practically done in their sleep. I used to do them in a small plane when I was a student, and it was one of my favorite things to do. There is a video by a certain pilot who mentours other pilots (I spelled "mentours" that way specifically). I can't cite his channel because if I do, YT will delete the post, but he explains in great detail how the go around process works. Take the misspelled word (without the s), and then add the (pilot), and he has one about go arounds, and the "toga" switch ("what happens when you push TOGA"). You will know everything you would want to know about the subject matter.

Hi Julia. Nothing like a "go around" to add a little excitement to your day. 😂. I remember 2 incidents that I won't ever forget. Once landing in Amsterdam in a 747 we landed and then immediately the captain applied full power and we took off at a very steep angle. After we climbed out and started circling the captain apologized and said we had to abort our landing as there was an aircraft still on our runway! The second incident was a rough touchdown at the old Hong Kong airport(the approach there was usually a white knuckle experience as you had to fly in over Kowloon twisting and turning to avoid mountains and high rise buildings) we landed so hard that the oxygen masks dropped down and the overhead baggage compartments popped open and ejected lots of luggage into the cabin! I was so grateful that our pilots were so competent and got us down safely. The flight attendants on both flights remained calm and reassured us that all was well and we would be at the gate shortly. Kudos to you and your fellow attendants for your professionalism and your ability to remain calm in such situations 👏 👍🏻.

I’ve flown about 500 time and that’s a very rare scenario . One time we had to alternate to Memphis and wait for weather to clear from fog, finally he decided to try Little Rock again, made it, but it was so foggy, you couldn’t see the blue runway edge lights. He had guts. Any way be safe

Sounds like the pilot handled it very well!!! Glad everything went well. I would be one of those people not very keen on flying. And yeh.. I always paid attention and looked at flight attendants.. I figured, if they are calm and fine, I should be as well (didn't always work though)... I think the work of flight attendants is very important and perhaps underestimated sometimes.. I'm guessing there are quiet a few people on planes that don't really want to be there. Having professional and skilled flight attendants is so important for the collective calm. I would fly anytime with you on the plane :) Take care!!! Oh and you have zero reason to ever apologize for not vlogging or making videos.. Whether you are tired or not.. Yeah, sounds like you caught a nasty gust on the nose during touchdown, which popped the plane back in the air before the auto-spoilers could come out. I was on a flight from San Diego into EWR and it was a turbulent flight. I donated all of my tissues and one clean handkerchief to those who were throwing up from air sickness. Upon descent, about 200 feet from the ground, the pilot pulled up. We ended up circling and then routing to Buffalo for refueling. We then returned. The pilot said that cross-traffic on the runway was "too close for comfort." I called the airline just to find out what happened, and I received a package in the mail with all sorts of vouchers and 50k frequent-flyer miles. Was really weird. I wasn't even complaining.

Haven't forgotten my first and only experience at an aborted landing. This was back in 2016 coming into London Heathrow. My flight never touched down on the ground when it happened. The flight was on the final approach but suddenly aborted before touching down. Gate wasn't ready and there was not enough space to wait. Captain told us that and that the tower had the flight ascend back into the air and circle in the air for a few minutes.

I have experienced two memorable go arounds. First was at ORD. We actually had to go around 3 times because of traffic on the landing runway. (ended up making for a very tight connection) 😰The other was at MCO due to a rapidly approaching thunderstorm (wind shear type of thing as well). Fortunately, we were able to quickly circle around and land before heavy rain dropped visibility to near zero.

Everyone who was not strapped in hit the ceiling with many injuries. It’s why I never take my seatbelt off. I’ve gone from LAX to London Gatwick without going to the bathroom. In 2016 I experienced a go around landing it Singapore. We don’t land on the ground but had to quickly get back up in the air and circle Changi airport for about 20 minutes. The Singapore Airlines pilots handled rhe sitation very well and landed in Singapore safely.

hi Julia, well it's always better to be safe than sorry and to land a bit late and be in one piece. Glad you have you had your first flight back. xx

Newark is an awful airport. Spent many hours on the tarmac there. Wait to get in and wait to take off. Glad you got there safely.

We were on a flight into CVG and had a similar landing…we a.most touched down and went right back up. It was a bit scary but after circling the pilot put us down safely/gently.

I had one instance of an aborted landing, going into Regan National. It was very stormy and windy. I am not typically a nervous flyer either, but I had already braced myself and closed my eyes, expecting a rough landing. Just about that time, my neighbor nudged me. I looked out the window to hear the engines rev back and us start ascending once again. It was quite unnerving. Plus, we had to circle back to like Ohio!

I remember the first time I felt an aborted landing as a passenger. It was at the end of a long haul flight from Portland, Oregon to Frankfurt, Germany. The last third or so of the flight was pretty turbulent. Got quite airsick. Captain did two touch and gos before coming around and landing on the third attempt.

No worry, if the opportunity for me to fly presents itself again , what you experienced won't deter me from stepping on the plane. Probably might even take the edge off the ever present nerves lol. In my very limited air travel history, an aborted landing/go around hasn't happened. That dinner looked so yummy! And what more can be said about the Luna face

I'm scared of flying, so thank you for explaining about the aborted landing and that everything turned out fine.

I’ve been in two go-arounds (as a non rev passenger never working!) and the first one I was nervous we wouldn’t land (w/o diverting) because a storm was close by. So this first one was probably similar to yours, the second one was coming into Austin and they said someone was on the runway in our way so we had to go around! Kinda of funny since I’m not a flight attendant (I’m a gate agent) and this was only your flight go around!

Unless there is an emergency mechanical or fuel issue with the aircraft, it's almost always a safer decision to go-around (abort) when encountering significant wind shear on short-final. Airline passengers should never question the decision making of a captain that got them to their destination safely. Nice video. Cheers 👍🏿
